One of the more recent offers on Michigan's board, Olney (MD) Good Counsel offensive lineman Sam Mustipher is looking to get to campus soon.
"I'm planning to visit Michigan for the spring game," he said. "I get a message from Coach Mallory almost every day and am talking to him about once a week or so. On Signing Day, I got a conference call from the coaching staff also, which was unique and something I really appreciated."
Good Counsel is known as one of the best football programs in the country. Michigan currently has one former Falcon on their roster with cornerback Blake Countess, and his effect on current Good Counsel players is still tangible, including Mustipher.
"(Blake) is the reason I ended up coming to Good Counsel. When I visit for the Spring Game, I may be coming with his family," Mustipher said. "Blake is a talent not only on the field, but off the field as a person as well. He's somebody I would definitely say I look up to."
A lot of times when you talk to recruits, their criteria in making their decision can sound very similar. This isn't the case with Mustipher. He's clearly put a priority on a different set of things.
"I want to surround myself with players and people who have the same goals as I do, and that doesn't just apply to on the field," he said. "I want to be around people who go the extra mile to run sprints after practice, or study the extra hour for a calculus exam. I want to find a place I can excel in more than one facet."
Because of that, player interaction will be vital on unofficial visits.
"Being on campus and being around the players will be a big factor for me," Mustipher said. "You're only around your coaches for part of the time, even when you're on the field. It's the bonds and with your teammates that ultimately determine how great your college experience can be, so I want to get a taste of that when I see schools."
Among the visits he's taken so far are two of Michigan's chief rivals, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Both went well, particularly Notre Dame, but one thing about Michigan specifically stuck out to him when visiting Columbus.
"I was visiting Ohio State for the Michigan game," he said, "and didn't really have a full idea of what the rivalry was like. It was amazing; you could see the pride in both fan bases just being there. One thing that really stuck out to me was how loud the small group of Michigan fans was when they'd do something good. You could hear them over the rest of the huge crowd. To me it spoke volumes about how much Michigan fans love their school."
Mustipher is planning return visits to Columbus and South Bend along with Florida State and Tennessee among others this off-season. At this point, he's strongly contemplating a decision before his senior season because he doesn't want to be a distraction to his teammates, as his main focus is winning another conference championship at Good Counsel. He is a four-star, Top247 recruit according to the 247Composite rankings and holds offers from the aforementioned schools and also Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson and Nebraska among others.
