Five-star LB interested in Michigan

Fort Wayne (Ind.) Bishop Luers five-star linebacker Jaylon Smith would like to hear more from the Michigan Wolverines.

Smith would like to hear more from the Wolverines.

“Coach (Curt) Mallory has stopped by my school late in the season and watched me play a game and talked to my coach,” Smith said. “I hear from Coach (Curt) Mallory some but I want to receive more interest from Michigan because that’s a school I really like.”

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound Smith already has offers from the likes of Ohio State, Notre Dame, Indiana, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Purdue, and Tennessee.

“I like the offers that I have but Michigan would be special to me," Smith said. "To wear that maize and blue is something I have thought about. They play with a lot of swagger now. If they offered I would seriously consider them.”

Smith has taken notice of the Wolverines success this season on the gridiron.

“Michigan has had a lot of success this season and that is important, it’s another reason why I like them,” he said. “They have a great 2012 class coming in and I know they are just going to get better.”

One of the main reasons the Wolverines have turned around their program is because of the improvement on defense under coordinator Greg Mattison.

“It would be a great opportunity to play under Coach Mattison in that defense," Smith said. "I feel like I would fit in very well because I have a high football IQ and I play with great technique."

This summer Smith wants to hit the camp circuit hard. He will attend the Nike Sparq combine, the Sound Mind/ Sound Body camp in Michigan, and various team camps this off-season.

“I want to get out there and prove to everyone that I am the No. 1 linebacker in the country,” Smith said.

In addition to being ranked the No. 1 linebacker in the country by 247Sports, Smith is rated the No. 4 prospect overall in the Top247 and the top player from the state of Indiana for 2013.
