Winovich Joins Project 135

This evening, Michigan was able to secure the commitment of their top linebacker target on the board when Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson outside backer Chase Winovich pledged to the Wolverines.

The 6'4"/215 lb. product decided to abruptly end his recruitment after a week that saw those in the Ohio State, Pitt and Michigan camps all feel good about their chances with the three-star. He gives the Wolverines the player they've coveted on the outside and one who could eventually take the torch from current star Jake Ryan in a strictly SAM spot.

Coach Manning stopped at Thomas Jefferson this weekend and it's possible that his work is what ended up sealing the deal for Michigan. There were rumors that Winovich had committed to Pitt earlier in the week, which he denied, and there was also word that he planned to visit Ohio State this weekend, leading some to believe he'd commit there as well, but it never came to fruition.

Darrell Funk was the lead area recruiter for Winovich for most of the process, but the aforementioned Manning, defensive coordinator Greg Mattison and most notably current commitment Michael Ferns all played an integral role in helping reel in a player the Wolverines were hot after following the commitment of Cleveland (OH) Saint Ignatius recruit Kyle Berger.

As soon as we're able to get in contact with Chase, we'll get his reaction as the number one class in the country continues to get stronger.
