why is denard at qb still?

  • The fact that people are arguing that we should have pulled Denard is ridiculous. The problem isn't Denard, its our WRs running poor routes, struggling to get open, combined with some questionable Borges playcalling. If you take Denard out the run game suffers tremendously. Bellomy is not that good of player and most likely will never start more than a handful of games at Michigan. He was unranked as QB by Rivals, and ranked 35th and the 39th by Scout and ESPN. Gardner will be an adequate option at QB once he is consistently getting snaps, but if you put Gardner in the game now you are also eliminating arguably your best WR from an already terrible WR core. Additionally, I don't blame Borges for being risky early, as the defense had shown little earlier in the year to make anyone think that they would be so successful against ND. Obviously in retrospect he shouldn't have called trick plays and done more to attempt to protect the ball, but our defense previously had been destroyed by Bama and a very mediocre Air Force. It's dumb to develop a game plan to depend on your defense to win when your defense has proven to be suspect previously in the season.

denard robinson throwing the ball right into the ND players hand and throwing to a wr that is triple teamed is the WRs fault? get real. I did not want them to pull denard but to blame borges and the wrs for the loss is asinine. denard blew the game. its all on him and he knows it. if he would of just took the sacks or threw the ball away in the redzone we would of won just by kicking field goals and if he took the sacks and threw it away when we were on our side of the field hagerup would of punted it back to their 20 yard line and they would have not scored because they couldn't move the ball on us.

Yeah, I mean after 3 years how can a guy:

-still throw 90% of his throws off of his back foot

-still NEVER (and I mean never: I don't believe I have seen him do this one time) throw the ball out of bounds

-still not be able to have the awareness to pull the ball down on a pass play and scramble; from my perspective, I would love to label him as a QB who gives up on the pass too quickly in order to run....but that simply isn't the case (which is absolutely mind boggling....)

-still be under 6 feet tall (wink) to where you cannot see over your O-line and therefore cannot see receivers downfield

He simply does not have a high football IQ. And that isn't his fault. I kind of feel that you either have that or you don't.

The offense is simply handcuffed right now: they live and die with whatever is going on in his head. Unfortunately, the downside to him is equal to the upside.

And I don't like the argument that Gardner is clearly not an upgrade. Why not? Because he can't run as fast as Denard? I think it's pretty safe to say that he is a better passer......And what good has Denard's speed been when Michigan plays good defenses?

With Morris coming in and the O-line guys Hoke has been recruiting.....the pro style cannot come soon enough.....

  • you guys are pretty quick to write off a man who has carried this football team and has stamped his name in the record books at MICHIGAN passing and running. He has won us FAR more games than lost for us. If you ask me, he is top 5 UM QB of all time. So what if he doesn't make the best decisions or throws INT's. If he throws 2 int's a game or less I'm happy because he makes up for it with his feet. We need to lay off him, he has been great, has brought exposure to the University and is a great kid and team player. I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the country...and will shed tears when he leaves.

mostly agree, don't think Borges is gameplanning to Denards strengths but his decision making was absolutely terrible in that game. He absolutely needs to know when to just throw the ball away or take a sack rather than just throwing balls up into coverage.

  • I think Borges sees what y'all see. Denard will run the ball more and he will run it even more if Toussaint doesn't get started. No worries guys...after what I've seen from all the Big 10 teams, I still think we run the table.

no argument here, the B1G is terrible this year and I don't see anyone on the schedule that scares me. If our defense can continue to improve upon what they did against nd and we utilize Denard in the right way we will have a great shot in all of our games.

I don't like the phrase "carried this football team" because that implies he has no help. Fitz is a big time player who can't get touches because the touches are going to Denard (and I realize that Fitz hasn't had a stellar year so far with the touches he has gotten but the point remains). Michigan has talent at WR but we don't know that because Denard can't get them the ball.....

"If he throws 2 int's a game or less I'm happy because he makes up for it with his feet." <------This is insanity right here. He did not make up for it with his feet against ND....or against MSU....or Wisconsin two years back....or in games against Iowa......You have to make solid, sound decisions as a QB and unfortunately that aspect is simply beyond him; he can't do it.

"He has won us FAR more games than lost for us." I don't want to take away from what he's done in the past; considering his severe QB limitations, he has done alright. But an argument could be made that an average QB who makes sound QB decisions could have won the same games for Michigan that Denard has won.

The debate IS NOT his character or what type of person he is; I am sure he is a great and pleasant guy with a good heart and so on.

But the writing is on the wall here: Michigan State WILL NOT let him run....it won't happen. So the offense has to live with Denard making throws and making QB decisions. To this point, he has fallen short in that area.

Personally, I would like to see Michigan adopt an extremely conservative offensive gameplan: run, run, run. Denard should not have more than 15 pass attempts per game. Play field position and protect the ball (unfortunately, this is "Tressel ball", but hey, it worked.....)

  • Bump.

This is what you get when Denard is not in the game at quarterback.

    Nothing.

Fwiw, when I started this thread, I was specifically referring to in the ND game specifically. I didn't elaborate at the time, but thought he should sit a series, and just let Bellamy hand it of

I've been saying Denard is our best option at QB too, but I have a hard time arguing he doesn't suck when throwing the ball. Our passing game posed zero threat even before Denard went down.

This throws looked pretty damn good tonight, the receivers just sucked all around tonight. The main difference is that Denard's throws were zip into tight windows, accurately tonight, while Bellomy just threw garbage soft tosses to everyone, every play. It is without question that Denard is the better passer, runner, and offensive weapon. Any other argument can talk to a wall.
