who is the starting dline next year?

  • I've got an idea penciled out, but I would like to hear who you guys have. Black at tackle or sde, beyer and Clark battles.....what say you?

  • I expect it to be
    SDE: Black
    NT: Q Wash
    DT: Pipkins
    WDE: Beyer

Clark, Heitzman, Ojemudia, Henry, and (maybe) Hurst jr in the rotation.

Really tough to say. You'd think Black, QWash, and Clark/Beyer have the inside track to start, but there are so many unknowns.

    - Will Ojemudia provide the option of Beyer bulking up and playing strong side?
    - Is Heitzman good enough to keep Beyer on the weakside?
    - Strobel was said to have a shot at playing time this year, so will he push for starting time on the strongside?
    - Is Wormley recovered to the point he can play? If so, what position?
    - Godin ready to contribute?

QWash, Black, Clark, Beyer, Ojemudia, Heitzman, Pipkins -- all have playing time this year and return
Ash, Wilkins still on the roster as upperclassmen
Godin, Strobel, Wormley, and Henry all looked to be relatively early contributors, so where do they fit?

That's really around 10+ potential contributors with Taco, Hurst, and Poggi all in line for redshirts.

I think Strobel and Wormley have a great shot at getting PT. Especially over a true fresh in Hurst JR.

  • SDE Wormley (if his knee heals in time)
    NT Washington
    DT Pipkins
    WDE Clark

I honestly forgot them. They should be in the SDE rotation.

And I think Hurst jr could rotate with Pipkins at DT. I'm a big fan of his.

I like Hurst too but i think we are getting to the point where we can redshirt DL guys.

  • I got the reaction I was hoping for. There is a ton of young talent and its really exciting to debate about. I think we won't really know until next year starts to be honest.
When its all said and done I think there will be a ton of rotating again. But wde will be interesting because three guys have divided time there and all three are talented.

Agree with that. I also think Black has done really well recently at the DT spot, so he could stay there and be the 3-tech starter with Q-Wash at the NT. If Heitzman/Strobel/Wormley can hold down the SDE position, I don't see a need to flip Black again to a new spot.

WDE: Clark / Beyer / Ojemudia
    NT: QWash / Pipkins
DT: Black / Henry / Wormley? / Godin?
SDE: Heitzman / Strobel / Wormley? / Godin?

And that's ignoring Ash and Wilkins who would both be going into their RS JR years. Seeing how much improved Washington has been this year it's not out of the question that one or both could step up and contibute.

  • It seems weird to have options now on defense. Glad we have a coach who understands you need to have a solid rotation that allows for multiple players to get playing time. It can never hurt to have too many players who could start.

  • Heitzman
    Black
    Washington
    Beyer

    For Sure

    bkp1883

  • SDE: Jibreel Black
    DT: Ehh...
    NT: Quinton Washington
    WDE: Brennan Beyer

Not sure who would start inside. Black has shown that he can't really play inside. Brink and Wormley could see serious time there. Clark and Ojemudia will see time at WDE. Heitzman probably can't move inside, so he and Strobel will contribute at SDE too.

Maybe Ash or Wilkins can step up at DT. Pipkins seems like more of a pure NT, the same as Washington. And he's still very raw, not sure if he's starting material yet.

I really don't like Black inside. Unless he gets a lot better inside than he is this year, he'll be a liability there.

? He's been solid inside and is a viable option to get into the backfield from the 3-tech position.

I think you will see Pipkins and Washington in together on 1st downs. At least against teams that pose a running threat. Black in my opinion should start at SDE but move inside on passing downs.

He's spent most of his time at WDE this year, not inside. IIRC only a couple snaps a game have been inside

Never mind, just reviewed some tape and I'm wrong. He's been inside enough to probably move there next year. But I maintain that he has not been impressive inside. He'll need to improve a lot to be able to not be a liability as a starter.

In the snaps he played inside against Northwestern he played well, IIRC he forced a fumble hitting the QB too.

  • I thought black was ok this year at tackle. But I think he is explosive and strong and I would love to see that from the sde position. I just think he could be trouble coming from that spot
Wormley may be a big contributer in the middle.

  • My opinion with LOTS of rotation

SDE: Heitzman / Beyer / Stobel
    DT: Black / Wormley / Godin /Henry
    NT: QWash / Pipkins
    WDE: Clark / Ojemudia

Maybe, he could finally "get it" and be able to make plays consistently like Q-Wash has this year. You never know, but I've heard Matt Godin has been pretty good inside during practice so he may have a shot at the 3-tech position next year.

  • I agree with the above.

Wormley would have played some this year, so I think he will be on the 2 deep next year. I bet we redshirt every DL from the 2013 class.

  • Honestly, I can't give you a starting lineup, but I'm just incredibly happy that we have a number of good DLs to the point where we can have a good rotation. Mattison loves rotating his DLs and the fact that we have depth is amazing. I love the fact that we can probably redshirt every 2013 DL.
