Honestly, we don't really use monikers for non-alum fans. That seems to be much more of an MSU thing. I can't recall the last time I saw anyone on this board say something like "dollar store domer."

I meant to ask IrishImpact, my bad.

Rich Rod wasn't the coach last year and Sparty came pretty close to winning the B1G.

MSU's recruiting hasn't suffered at all since Hoke came on board.. a lot of UM fans make this point- they just assume that because UM's recruiting is good (Rich Rod also had two top 10 classes)- MSU's has to suffer and that's just not the case.

In 2014, MSU has two of the top 5 kids (#2 and #4) in the state of MI already

I realize you may have missed past discussions on this, but Hoke has changed recruiting for MSU. Under RichRod, kids with common offers saw MSU with a 9-8 advantage, if I remember correctly. Under Hoke, that has changed to a 23-4 or something advantage for Michigan. Kids that were deciding between MSU and Michigan are going to Michigan. MSU has to look deeper for their commits now.

While that is true, MSU is replacing those kids with basically the same "star" level player.

I guess I just meant the classes have been basically the same for Michigan State since Hoke took over at UM, even though UM's has improved.

Michigan wasn't going after the same kids under RichRod as they are now. Under RichRod, there were 5-6 kids that Coach D indentified as kids he wanted at MSU and RichRod wanted at Michigan. They basically split those kids. Now there have been +12 each cycle, with Michigan getting the majority of those.

Now, with that, I was basically repeating what I said earlier. But, what I am getting at is, now with Michigan taking so many kids that coach D identified as "Plan A" kids, he is having to move on to Plan B, C... Kids. He is having go to fall back options now with Hoke at Michigan that he didn't have to before.

Edit: I could go into more detail, but there have many threads discussing the same thing in the past.
Cliffnotes: Coach D can identify talent, Coach Hoke can get them to commit.

What's interesting, and hasn't really been brought up, is, like in most huge fan bases (UM, OSU, ND, etc)- because they have history of being good- their fan bases increase.

Meaning, if you had no ties to UM but are a UM fan (ie didn't go there, no family ties), you probably picked to root for UM because they were good, or your parents rooted for UM because they were good. Over time, you've grown to really like them, root for them, hate their rivals, etc. but when you were younger (and more easily influenced)- you rooted for them because 1- your parents rooted for them or 2- because they were good.

It's the same reason people not from NY root for the Yankees or why fans not of LA root for the Lakers. Because you want to root for the team your friends, parents, etc. root for and everyone wants to root for a winner.. no one wants to root for a loser- that's no fun.

So, my theory is if MSU was the better team in the state from the 70s-90s, the parents who didn't weren't partial to either school would have been MSU fans, and thus, rooted for MSU, which in turn means, a lot of UM fans would actually be MSU fans.

You became a fan of a school because they were good, on TV a lot, etc. and if that so happened to be MSU when you were first being influenced and picking your team, you would, today, be a MSU fan.

Very good point. I had no desire to cut eyeholes in a brown paper and wear it over my head. Therefore, I am a UM fan. biggrin

The whole Walverine thing stems from the 3rd shift UAW foreman from Wyandotte who's a "been a huge UM fan since like forever, dude" and tries to talk shit. Or perhaps the infamous WMU grad that would root for UM over their alma mater.

Again, for the millionth time, who are you to say whether or not that WMU or CMU or NMU (etc) fan could root for Michigan over their alma mater or not? Again, feel free to insult that person if they start attacking MSU academics, but if not, let that person choose who they FEEL LIKE rooting for. Is it really that hard?

Yep. It's apparently just that hard.

  • MSUs defensive coordinator had to bring up Michigan in his press conference today after losing to Nebraska. Said that Martinez was faster than Denard. Michigan is always on their mind.
