First off, I am not here to flame or troll. There is no real inferiority complex. I would not trade my Spartan pride for any amount of success in any sport. I'm sure no Michigan fan on here would either. Sure, Michigan has been a very successful football team for an awful lot of years, but what I, as a diehard fan of MSU endure from the bottom half of your fan base is ridiculous.

In 2010 after 6 hours of tailgating, I made my way into Michigan Stadium feeling confident. I saw lots of green fans around me as I came through the gate on Stadium. I shouted out: "Go Green!". And got back a nice loud: "Go White!" From about twenty fans in the nearby vicinity. One of your fans seemed to have a real problem with me rallying fans of my team. He was a strapping young man, with scars on his face and a lovely neck tattoo. He was wearing a Charles Woodson jersey that had clearly seen better days. He asked me, in such a nice way--I'm quoting him verbatim: "Why don't you shut the f*ck up.". I had my twelve year old nephew with me at the time. I was kind of shocked, since I hadn't said anything derogatory about U of M at all, and was just trying to get to my seat and enjoy the game. Lesson learned.

Yesterday, while getting drive thru at a Wendy's, I had the guy taking money at the window tell me a price ten times the amount I was told at the intercom, before he laughed and said: "I figured I'd charge you more for being a State fan.". I laughed and said: "That's funny. Did your U of M degree make you qualified for this job?"

I usually have nothing but fun-loving banter with actual U of M grads. Both my sisters graduated from there, but myself and other fans of MSU HATE the bottom of your fan base. In fact, I think a lot of actual U of M graduates wish these mouth-breathers weren't fans of their school. At least that's what I hear from the alumni that I know.

Do we have a few bad apples at MSU on gameday? Of course. But I argue that there is no worse example of these types than in Ann Arbor on a home football Saturday.

I suppose I'll get down voted, I really don't care if I do- but I thought I'd give you a perspective from the other side.

Good luck the rest if the season...I won't be pulling for your team at all, but I will say that Mr. Robinson is a good kid, and I like how respectful he has been towards MSU in the past. Now, Mike Hart... never mind.

Somebody starts that thread once a month. It always ends in people arguing because we have no idea. We are just tired of talking about it.

I didn't realize it was news, but most programs recruit heavily in and around their home state. That is why I did not list players from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. If you look at OSU's 2012 and 2013 classes, you will find a similar predominance of players from Ohio and neighboring states. Of course, when you keep whiffing on so much of the top talent from Ohio and nearby states (Dymonte Thomas, Kyle Kalis, Alex Anzalone, Jaylon Smith, Mike McCray, Ben Gedeon, Logan Tuley-Tillman, Deveon Smith, Ondre Pipkins, James Ross, Michael Ferns), it necessarily forces you to reach further and further away to scrape together some semblance of a D-1 class. But I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

I feel like I have a pretty good perspective on the UM/MSU thing as I was born and raised in AA by two UMAA alum parents and went to State. Yes, I got into UM but chose to go to MSU to pursue my own athletic career, and secondarily to go somewhere not as close to home (I don't expect anyone to believe me - its all good). I grew up a huge UM fan, season tickets to UM football/hoop/hockey, etc.

Like most Spartans, I have never had any issue with UM alums, I enjoy the back and forth and it's always been mutually respectful. The whole Walverine thing stems from the 3rd shift UAW foreman from Wyandotte who's a "been a huge UM fan since like forever, dude" and tries to talk shit. Or perhaps the infamous WMU grad that would root for UM over their alma mater. I really don't mind it as it's entertaining to check these fools and own them with their own ignorance...I'd never go out of my way to start something with someone like this (kind of like picking on someone with a disability) but I admit to getting some guity pleasure out of "ending it" when they step out of line.

I can't control where I grew up, AA is a great town and being a UM fan as a kid was part of the whole thing. However as you grow you need to man up and make choices, and if you choose to go to another school man up and root for them for God's sake. I can't fathom rooting for someone other than where I spent the best 4 years of my life...I just can't wrap my head around those who'd intentionaly root for the school they attended to lose to another school just because their parents put them in an Anthony Carter jersey as a kid. Extremely strange.

It's also ironic to me that many Walverines are "die hard state-of-Michigan" folks with Tigers/Wings tatoos, etc. Yet they choose to follow the public institution in MI that does the least to educate kids from MI. UM is a great school, but one that caters to the out of state and increasingly out of country students. If you have a huge "Mitten" tattoo on your back you'd think you'd support places like State and even WMU/EMU/CMU as they are made up at the core by kids from MI, not Long Island.

Interesting anecdote...my Dad has several degrees from UM's engineering school, and is somewhat of a "big deal" with them - gets asked reguarly to come back and speak, participate in School of Engineering leadership/steering activities, etc. He's shared with me his dissapointment as he's seen UM increasingly cater to out of state/foriegn students - his opinion is that public state institutions should cater first to the citizens of that state and he's seen a huge shift away from that at UM (at least related to Engineering). His dissapointment in this has affected his participation/financial support for UM. Again, I know that 43-year-old-wearing-a-Woodson-jersey Tom from Taylor MI doesn't know/care about things like that, but part of being a Spartan is repping the State of MI.

Approximately 65% of Michigan's undergrads are residents of the State of Michigan. And only about 13% of all students (including graduate schools) are international.

IMO they should lower it to 50%. It would improve the school's academic profile and bring in more students paying full tuition.
