I'm a college football fan and don't really cheer for either school, but I'm really curious...Why does MSU have such an inferiority complex? Can someone please explain this to me?

They claim that they only label Michigan fans that never attended U of M and denigrate their education as "Walverines," but that's just not true. I've seen them call people who are current U of M students Walverines too. Huh?

I forget which thread it was exactly (or even if it was on 247), but there was this other MSU guy there saying that he had met a "Walverine" who only did their undergrad at Michigan. Wow.

And I know not all MSU fans are like this (I've met a few cool ones), but from what I've seen it's pretty bad.

They have an inferiority complex because they're inferior. It's really self explanatory.

I'm a student at U of M but I'm fine being called a Walverine, it still places me above Spartans on the ladder of life.

  • While I didn't attend college at UM. I do have my college degree, I couldn't afford to go UM. So I got my Gen ED classes out of the way at a CC, and took the rest of my classes at a University for my Bachelors. I grew up watching Michigan sports, I was fan of Michigan football, before I was a fan of any other team, I will always bleed blue. But I have a quite a few fans that are fans of MSU who didn't even attend college. The thing is, every school has this. What's the point of arguing about it. The whole Walverine thing is down right childish and is a good indication of a majority of their fans. They probably have the same ratio of Fans who attended MSU, to those who didn't as MSU. Just we have more, because we have a much larger fanbase.

Bottom line, who cares what school/team you root for.

  • If I don't go to Michigan, but go to another high quality university, does that make me a Walverine.

  • From the few threads I've read the past day or so, this is what qualifies you as a Walverine or Walmart Wolverine:

    - You don't live in Michigan.
    - You didn't go to college and cheer for U of M.
    - You did go to college, but have no affiliation with U of M.
    - You are a student (undergrad or grad) at one of U of M's regional campuses.
    - You are an undergraduate student at U of M (especially if you're in LSA).
    - You are a graduate student, but studying something that they deem to be "not a real field."

    Gotcha.

  • Let's put it this way, I root for Michigan when they play MSU. That's how annoying MSU fans happen to be right now.

  • I went to GMI (now Kettering University). They run a quadmester co-op program with 2 completely separate student bodies. You go to school for 12 weeks and then work for 12 weeks while the other student body goes to school and works while you are in school.
There is no way you can field a team that way.
My grandfather, father and brother graduated from Michigan.
    I guess I must be a Walverine.

Exactly. I would have been 110+ K in debt easily if I had went to Michigan. It's nice to graduate without any debt. Went to SVSU.

Oh crap. Then make sure you get into Michigan, study something like Engineering or Medicine, then get a graduate degree and maybe a PhD for good measure. Then maybe, just maybe, you won't be considered a walverine (did I say maybe?).

Damn, I'm a big time Walverine. Lived in PA all my life, and graduated from PSU. PSU students used to love when I'd wear my Michigan gear around campus flex

What about if you went to MSU, but are a fervent Michigan fan.....am I a Walverine then? That was not outlined in the bullets. I think I'm exempt because thats just on a whole nother level to do something like that.

MSU has had an inferiority complex since the dawn of time. I can remember sitting in classes and having professors explain why MSU has an inferiority complex against us. It used to baffle me. Then I realized one day .... they were just jealous.

Brings back an old phrase we used to sing in the student section ... "That's all right ... that's ok ... your gonna work for us someday."

  • I don't really care what half of them think or say. If people want to sit down and talk football and life, then I'm all for it. Trying to troll or toss out insults around an internet forum is comical to me. I don't care what anyone has or doesn't have in their life. If you're rich or poor, employed or unemployed. If you come across as a good person, then you're OK in my book. Far more things in life to worry about then wasting my time arguing with people who aren't level-headed.

With that said, I've been a Mich fan for as long as I can remember. I never lived in Mich and frankly, the closest I've come, besides driving or flying through, is when my Dad was stationed in Conn. I didn't get my degree from Mich and never even thought about applying because of the cost. I've been all over the country because of the military so if people want to try and justify what they call us, then more power to them.

I bleed maize and blue, and more than likely will until I die, and what I do professionally or where I live will never dictate that. goblue

That takes some serious balls especially going to a school like PSU. Good on your part.
