During the season I think he was up around 300. Which still isn't massive, but it is bigger

lol at the way football is these days. Whoever would have thought people would someday say "up around 300 (pounds)" isn't a massive human being. lol

I get the feel that in around 15-20 years the average size of a lineman will be around 330ish with advanced S&C and proper diets.

Black is currently listed at 278, RVB was listed at 288 last season (not sure when exactly they updated that (i.e. beginning season, mid-season, etc.) 10 pounds is a nice sized difference, but Black is also more athletic than RVB. If Black can add about 5 pounds before the season starts he will still be smaller, but 5 pounds less, but being more athletic will be a minimal difference. Meanwhile BWC is bigger than Mike Martin was. Our WDE will likely be at worst the same size as last year, likely slightly bigger. Our SDE will be about the same size probably, maybe slightly smaller (can't remember Heininger's weight), but will be much more talented. Our LB will also be bigger. So while Black might be 10 pounds or fewer smaller the rest of the front 7 will be bigger.

Thing is, we just don't know yet. But camp opens tomorrow and soon we get to clear up some questions.

Black may indeed be awsome this year. Size def does not mean everything but ducks and I agree we would be more comfortable with some bigger bodies.

The debate is great though because this is an unprecedented position for black. I mean how often does the wde switch to tackle? How can we possibly guage his potential.

Ha ha...you never know. But someone posted NFL kinsman averages a few weeks ago and they actually were less. Like 305 average or something. So just like your previous argument, beef may not always be better.

I would love to trot out athletic 340 lb. Line. The intimidation factor would be off the charts.

Yeah but the difference is that they won't be "beefy" or slow by any means, they would be like they are now, just with more muscle.

Really? I prefer that he backups up Demens at the Mike so he's ready to start next season.

I think he'll turn out to be better than Demens like Countess last year.

Demens is a very good LB, if Bolden passes him it will mean he has regressed, which would be bad.

I got beat up for saying the same thing last week. It really scares me.

It helps we play the 4-3 under with five guys near the line but we need more beef. Pipkins at 340 can provide that hopefully. I just don't know what to expect from campbell.

Campbell scares me, he has underachieved his whole Michigan career. I think that's why I have convinced myself Pipkins will be as advertised.

This year, just like last year, is the year that Campbell should step it up and be a major contributor on the line.

It's just hard to put faith in a guy who has been so inconsistent. We will find out this next few weeks if he is up to the task.

He's transformed his body to a great weight, it's all whether he can get leverage consistently. We all saw flashes of what he could be last season, if he can get his technique down, he could have a Nick Fairley like season.

Yes yes yes we all know its a leverage problem. We have heard IF he can get low he can dominate for three years. But everyone is nervous because he hasn't done it for three years. He was 314 for most of the last hear so I don't really see him losing 10lbs and all of a sudden his leverage issues are fixed! It has more to do with him realizing its his senior season, realizing hey if I don't do this now its over for me.

On another note, ojemudia is the same weight as Clark last year. So I'm not sure the argument about him being to small carries any weight(pun intended)

We'll see with Campbell, this is his second year of actually coaching so he should improve.

Ojemudia still needs to learn technique and if he plays I hope it's later in the season.

Well you hit the nail on the head. It's his second of with Montgomery. This is the main reason I haven't given up on him, and it provides hope. He has the body, let's hope the coaches hammer him into a player

Campbell's leverage issues were always attributed to his height too, not his body weight. More weight doesn't usually mean you have problems standing up faster. It's all about discipline in staying low and on your assignment instead of trying to see where the ball is going.

I agree that in year 2 of A LOT of individual coaching we might see improvements, but I still expect him to be a major drop off from Mike Martin last year. As long as he doesn't get blown off the ball though and can command a double-team sometimes, I think we'll be fine.

    Dizzo

  • BWCs issue is his inability to shed blocks sometimes. Too often he stays locked with an OL in a stalemate. That's ok in a 2-gap D but it's detrimental for 1-gap.
