  • People are saying that this is a measuring stick game for Michigan. So, how far does Michigan still have to go? Another 3-4 years perhaps?

  • I'm betting Barnum is 50/50 to start the next game.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

2-3 years IMO. They can still be a good B1G team this year.

Nah. I think our defense is actually not that far. Our DL is getting pushed around, but we knew that. With two more years of recruits, we will be at a pretty high level. Same with our OL, and our QB will be a more traditional player soon.

I say another two years. Next year we will be slightly better.

Without Denard, Kovacs, Demens, Floyd, Roh, BWC, Roundtree, and possibly Lewan and Toussaint. I don't think so, but I certainly hope that I'm wrong.

Is it possible that without our current playmakers on offense we'll be better? Denard is a once-in-a-lifetime type of athlete. We'll probably never see another one like it in the future given our staff's propensity for a more traditional QB. What are your thoughts on this?

  • You are using arguably the best offensive line in the last 20 years as the basis for yor opinion. Our DL isnt as much of a probl as our LBs getting blocked or out of position.

Will we ever get that type of OL unit in the future, based on our recruiting effort?

No way. Michigan will take a step back next year. You need to shoot for 2014. Shane and the '13 class will need time to develop. If guys like Dawson can compete for playing time as freshman, they can help bolster the lines.

We are seeing why you can never have too many elite d-backs. I would make a strong push for LM III about now.

We have pulled two very good classes. Coaching makes a huge impact and we need Funk to stick around.

Bama is the exception, not the rule. If we're only going to judge ourselves against Alabama, we're going to be awful frustrated.

To be 'leaders and the best', we need to benchmark against AL. Is the goal to be slightly better than MSU or IU? Or, beat OSU every other year?

Curious to how the coaching staff 'focuses' the team AND the program after this cluster mess.

We are benchmarking against Alabama, to the tune of 41-14. We have a lot of work to do to get to that level. Them again, so does 99.999% of the other 120 D1 teams.

  • What is amazing? Michigan has almost the same # plays as AL, and LEADS them in time of possession.

    Sore thumb stat?

That is fine to compare to Alabama, but did you honestly think this team was "leaders and best"? This is one game and we have a lot of work to do but you shouldn't freak out over this game.

I do not fret. I figured we lose by 21 + easily. I am curious to see how the coaches use this cluster mess as a teaching tool for the team, fanbase, and the program. To be elite .... requires intangile elements we do not possess .... yet.

Along with 'elite' talent ... aka playmakers.

Yep ..... freshman about to get some serious playing time. The Air Force game looks much tougher than expected for next week.

Correct. But I consider us better than the rest ... or at least should strive to be. At this point, we are not contending for squat this year. We can reality check again in 3 weeks.
