I didn't want to start a new thread over this, But say Trey Burke decides to head for the draft after this year, who is taking over PG next year? Spike Albericht or Derrick Waton? Really how good is Walton? Is he good enough to start freshman year? I barely know anything about basketball haha. But what would you experts say?

Too many questions I realize. Lol

Walton most likely. Walton is a consensus top 50 rated player coming out which is higher ranked than Trey Burke was. Not saying he will be as good as Burke or anything but if he does not beat out Spike to start next year it is not a good sign for Walton's future in basketball.

Oh really? That's great news to me! There is nothing I love more than watching Burke play and how much of a game changer he is. How about the Irvin kid?

Irvin is a stud. I have really high hopes for him. I would recommend watching their tapes if you haven't.

Likely Derrick Walton... at least I hope.

  • Thanks guys for the info and the videos! I was just wondering all this because I loved the recruits we got in 2012 so I was hoping we are continuing to be relevant in basketball!

It will only get better from here.

  • A comment to all on the Burke and Walton discussion: Burke wasn't regarded as college ready when he came to Michigan. In fact, IIRC, he wasn't the starter for his first few games.

    Irvin > Hardaway?

    Irvin > Hardaway?

Irvin will be better than Hardaway. He's more athletic and bigger for starters, and he should be better off the dribble with similar shooting numbers.

    Irvin > Hardaway?

I think so. I am not a big fan of Hardaways. I feel as if he makes too many mistakes each game and is sporadically inconsistent. Can't be too sure how Irvin adjusts to college ball, but from everything I've seen and read he looks like a kid that's going to do extremely well in Beilein's offense. He just grew two inches this year, so he could conceivably be 6'7" when he's playing at Michigan next year. For someone that athletic with such a smooth shot? drool

I know this year's team is really good and could still potentially make a real run in the NCAAT, but I can't wait for next year.

Stauskas, Mcgary, and (hopefully) GR3 will come back as much better players next year so Walton won't have as much pressure to lead the team as Burke has this year.

I'd look for all 3 to make huge improvements not only in their physical games, but their mental games. An aggressive GRIII could be scary, as would a Stauskus that plays D or a McGary that is a threat in the low post. One guy I'd look out for is Caris LeVert. He's already a pretty good defender, which is the toughest thing for freshmen to grasp. Once he fills out and works on his shot a little, he could be good.

  • Honestly, there's not a single player on this year's team, who wouldn't benefit from another year at Michigan. Even Burke, though I wouldn't fault him for going. Now nothing about Robinson or Hardaway makes me think "yeah these guys can play in the NBA in the fall".

Good mention - I forgot Levert. Frank mentioned this earlier, but he could maybe develop into a Oladipo-type player. Hopefully Mcgary learns to dunk the ball.. So many times he has a wide open lane to the rim and misses the lay up, where he could have just dunked it. He actually had one today vs Indiana, and that would have been the difference in the game seeing as how we lost by 1. I think it's all mental for GR3. He's by far the best athlete on the team, noticeably better than even Burke imo. He just needs that confidence. Obviously GR3 can still get stronger and improve physically, but you get the point.

Burke is cursed by his freshman year, where he had to do it all. You still see him 3-4 times per game force a stupid shot. I think it'll take some getting used to for him in the NBA, but he'll be fine.

Mark Donnal is the other 2013 recruit and I love his game. He is a stretch 4 who has a nice post up back to the basket game but can step out and knock down a 3 as well. He will give us the ability to go big and move Robinson to the 3 at times next year if Coach B desires.

The problem is, coach B probably won't desire to do that for whatever reason.

I disagree. I think we will see Robinson at the 3 some next year if he comes back.

  • @Balas_Wolverine: Michigan gets a hoops commitment from Bishop Verot big man Ricky Doyle, a '14. More to come ...

I don't know if that means more commitments to come or more news on Doyle, but this is very good news in light of yesterday's game.

He missed some time with a stress fracture (foot?) so his ranking is not the best. We all know Belien has an eye for talent though.
