Zone Blocking vs Power Blocking

  • Watching the AF and UMass games again on my DVR, it seems the OL is much more equipped for blocking a downhill running scheme. When we use the Power I formation or Denard Robinson with a lead blocker, the OL actually does a very good job of coming off the ball and opening up holes. We seem to be having a problem blocking the zone read play (which we run a lot of) or slow developing sweeps with the RB. We're not getting anyone to the second level and our backs are running too much East and West. Hoke said it in his press conference.... "stick a foot in the ground and get vertical". We need to our RB's to make one cut and go and then once they get to the second level then use their moves to break tackles. But the more they run East and West behind the line, the more the pursuit catches up with them. What do y'all think? Our pass blocking has been extremely good thus far, but I think our OL have too much of a mean streak to just continue zone blocking a majority of the time. Basically my conclusion comes down to this....i know we don't wanna make Denard a drop back passer but I think we need to implement more Power I plays during the game to at least jump start the running game and get the RB's a full head of steam when they hit the hole.

  • This years version of the offensive line is not as athletic as last years, which is why they are struggling with the zone read plays.

I disagree, the only position on the OL where there is a downgrade in athleticism is C. The other 4 are either improvements or the same.

    Never Lose Hoke

  • What do you mean? It's the same other than Molk.

No, Schofield kicked out to tackle this season, so the loss of Molk and the athleticism of Schofield on the inside was a pretty big loss IMO.

  • This is an area where I think Molk was really undervalued. The center is the captain and is responsible for calling out blitzes and making sure everyone knows what they are doing. If we don't work as a unit then we fail. This is why, unlike defensive line Hoke doesn't like rotations bc you need the chemistry.

It could be that Mealer is struggling with this aspect of things.
