Would you do it the osu way for 10 years of success?

  • Cause we're talking about the Football programs, not the Basketball programs?

I completely understand the argument of simply comparing the Universities. However the topic was pretty obviously about our football program. I understand if you don't agree with that view, but that's why most people here don't really feel that it's hypocritical.

So when you compare just the football teams it boils down to comparing extra practice time to extra benefits.

ALL that being said, the way Michigan handled both the basketball violations and the practice violations are exactly the way I would expect them too, and pretty different from the style OSU used.

Again, the mere fact that compensation is desirable doesn't mean the compensation can't be under-compensatory or that the system is not exploitative.

No one doubts that universities have the right to sell replicas of Denard Robinson's jersey, just like no one doubts the Patriots have the right to sell replicas of Tom Brady's jersey. The point is that like Tom Brady, Denard Robinson should get a cut from his own jersey sales.

Who, precisely, is hurt if someone wants to pay $10,000 for Denard Robinson's autograph?

As far as the logistics of paying college players go, I really liked the proposal someone wrote up in the New York Times Magazine last year. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/magazine/lets-start-paying-college-athletes.html?pagewanted=all

You can read the details in the link, but the basic idea is that you would treat recruits like free agents and sign them to actual contracts on NSD. There'd be a minimum salary per player and a salary cap for the universities so that a school with T Boone Pickens behind it couldn't just blow away everyone else.

Do you really think college football would remain in competitive balance if recruits were treated like free agent?

There would only be a hand full of schools who could afford to continue to compete killing the sport and the future of these athletes in sports. I think that is asinine. A high school kid who has proved absolutely nothing but he has talent should be given a contract?

You originally retorted to; "what is the best way to become a professional football player?"

Enroll in college work hard at your game and hope you get drafted.

What is the best way to become an electrician? Become an apprentice for a few years, exploited until you learn enough and put in your time achieving journeymen status.

What is the best way to become a plumber, architect, doctor, mason, carpenter, etc.

    Wow, serious exploitation!

However, if it happens this way in sports it is completely ridiculous and causing rampant exploitation of student athletes? I got an idea why don't you, dkerns and the rest of the pay to play party start a semi pro league like the Junior A and B hockey leagues they run in Canada. Give the athletes a choice, play semi pro until draft time or become terribly exploited while you get an education and play hockey. You guys can sell shirts, pins, cups, anything your heart desires and make sure there is no exploitation.

  • If every team has the same salary cap? Yeah. In fact, I think that would produce more competitive balance because one school probably couldn't afford to sign every blue chipper unless those guys were willing to take less money to play for that team. Along the same lines, schools that a top-flight recruit would never consider today might actually get into the running for a guy if they were willing to give up more of their cap to him than an elite program would.

Not gonna respond to the rest of the drivel in that post.

  • You shouldn't cheat....never, never, never....and I'm an OSU fan believe it or not. When I was younger I used to play a lot of golf. There were times when I used the old "foot wedge". Believe it or not to this day I regret doing that and have told some of my old playing partners that I used to do it from time to time. Unfortunately in our society the old mantra that says "If your not cheating, your not trying" seems to be winning out far too often. I watch sports for what I see on the field or court. So my interest is only in winning or losing. But sadly I believe cheating is happening everywhere in all sports. How about steroids or other performance enhancers? How many kids are using those to get the chance to play at a Michigan, OSU, etc. That's cheating and should not be condoned. Cheating, short-cuts or whatever else you want to call them should never be condoned or endorsed. How do you stop the cheating? To me you ban players, programs, etc. for cheating but that will never happen....too much money involved. I will still root for OSU as I've been a fan for over 50 years and you can't teach an old dog new tricks. It's just kind of sad really.

Still missing the point. Fine. Let's take basketball out of the equation and lets take OSU out of the equation. How can you claim (you meaning those on this thread collectively) that UM does things the right way when you are on probation for CHEATING in football?

I'm sure this will get cut by Stalin as well. Not sure why when clearly we are having a good discussion on the topic with no one being flamed. Why the mass censorship? I thought UM was a school of liberals and could have a healthy debate on a topic.

Look, you're forgetting that this boils down to recruiting advantages which equal wins down the line. Kids know you can get paid at osu, so they decide to commit there. They sell their stuff, Tressel covers it up, and the cycle continues. It's cheating, plain and simple.

Ohio State fan here. I truly am not being a troll, but I assume with your responses in terms of "doing it the right way," all Michigan fans will disavow any relationships with the Fab 5.

As stated, I am an OSU fan, but not one of Tressel. I actually have repeatedly called him a liar and a cheater and have been hammered on several forums for it. While the Fab 5 was obviously basketball-related, they still were "Michigan Men." Webber and crew certainly did not live up to the lofty standards set by your fan base. I take it most Michigan fans are content with not having the Final 4 banners hanging in Chrisler Arena.

Except recruits didn't sign with Michigan to get in extra practice time. Players did sign with Ohio because they knew they would get additional benefits. So there is a difference. Both schools are on probation, but for way different reasons.

There is absolutely no possible way that the NCAA would ever handle managing something like that. The NCAA can't even handle not paying the players. Wake up! All the Blue chip kids would be in Miami, New York, So Cal, and several other metropolises with in a few years. The mafia would be reincarnated. Are you affiliated?

Because our "cheating" was 15 minutes of stretching and taping. When the allegations were made the university immediately opened their doors and aided the NCAA in any way possible with their investigation. Doing things the right way doesn't mean you never make a mistake.

Please show one thread of evidence that this is the case. All the issues at tOSU involved players that were already in the program. You are just assuming that somehow recruits were lured to campus with the promise of extra benefits. That's reckless and irresponsible without evidence.

  • my friend, you should not speak michigan, and integrity in the same sentence. need I remind everyone of the fab 5? michigan got hit with the largest fines the ncaa has ever handed down. but as typical of meechigan fans, you all have memory loss when it comes to your team. not to mention your football teams recent probation for extra practice time. but go ahead, and talk all you will about integrity if it helps you sleep at night. I am not saying what tressel did was right, but your program is not without its flaws. but you tell me, where were the benefits on the field, for selling personal items? I think an athlete benefits much more by extra practice time.

1.) I keep seeing OSU fans say "fab 5" over and over. Learn a little history as to who was actually involved in the scandal.

2.) The majority of the punishment (and by far the harshest of the penalties, and all of the fines) were actually self imposed by Michigan and not the NCAA. That sure as hell sounds like some integrity to me. Compare that to OSU's responses throughout the years.

3.) Nobody has said our program is without flaw.

  • I'm curious to see how clean you all think a top college program is. All of this is just an opinion without facts.

I've been saying this for a few years now: Each and every big time program has improper benefits hidden in their program. I've been saying that there is no way that there wasn't anything shady going on with OSU (I didn't think the shady thing would be Tressel, and quite honestly I'm still not too sure if he was what created the overcast), but if you look at those who have won national championships recently, some have had a proven issue with the NCAA. And I don't believe OSU was really as dirty as you all are implying, because if they were, I find it hard to believe that the NCAA was not able to find more during the investigation. Regardless, if the programs down south (or anywhere) are paying their players, how do you think other programs are staying so competitive? Programs like OSU, Michigan, Oregon, USC, Virginia Tech, etc. have to be doing some kind of undercover deals to sign players that have been offered by teams like Alabama or a proven payer such as Auburn.

After the whole USC thing, when I was young and foolish, I remember thinking that that would never happen at Ohio State. I think my senior year of high school was when I realized that we absolutely had to be doing something somehow, whether it was a booster, someone in admin, or a coach or whatever, something had to be going on.This makes me think that Alabama, LSU, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, FSU, USC, UO, UTexas, OU, and the recent uprising of Nebraska all has something to do with some form of pay. There has to be a hole in the system that these teams had figured out and are exploiting and because of this, many other programs have to follow suit.

Also, if OSU was cheating from the get go with Tressel, how do you think Michigan was still able to recruit so well under Carr even though OSU and UM had a lot of recruits they were battling for?

Do you think your program is really clean? Because I once thought that about our program as well. I just do not see clean in college athletics right now.

guess I got here a little too late..

  • You and the rest of your lame-brain friends need to understand that what went on at the Ohio State University football program is also taking place at most, if not all, programs in this USA. If you think not then you have your hand buried in the sand. The media took this small happening and built it into a news story of magnitude proportions, selling newspapers, magazines and mega online time. BUT don't you, for one moment, think that all is kosher with your foosball program because it just hasn't been investigated and unveiled. GO BUCKEYES

  • I love you all, ..... No I really mean that. But we got busted for selling personal property for tattoos, you got busted for taking extra "mandatory" "voluntary" practice time. Ours had no advantage on the field advantage and yours did no good on the field. Gents, seriously, get off your effing high horses. Now with that said we both move on, you have a new coach that shows promise and give you at least second place in the B1G which is cool by me and we have a new coach who I really haven't liked since his days at Utah but he seems to have trimmed the fat off the big uglies and actually give us a friggin passing game, [panick] plus has recruited the best DL class in the country which is the secret of the SEC run the NCG. So all I can say is LET'S GET IT ON

    Wrong.

We got busted for not properly filing practice reports.

Some assistant coaches got to practice early while the players were still stretching, and the NCAA decided to count that as part of our practice limits (even though it wasn't). That's it. THAT is why we got in trouble.

Big difference in what happen at your school.

  • Yep, it's not cheating when a program provides extra practice time and hides the paper work... But it is cheating when a player gets a tattoo when selling his personal belongings. So did the tattoo make the student athlete a better player or the extra practice time make the student athlete a better player? I think if you have any sense of realism the extra practice is more of a competitive advantage, but then again there isn't a whole lot of reasoning north of Toledo... It's sad that so many think UM is a good school when the typical UM fan can't reason....

    Not splitting here.

YOU implied that we were forcing players to attend extra voluntary practices, which is no where near what happened.

And a lousy newspaper with an actual agenda (unlike the one that tOSU fans think that ESPN has out for them) lied a great deal about what happened, and a lot of what originally was said was proven to be wrong. A lot of the "anon" players that the newspaper used were, in fact, fake.
