Would you do it the osu way for 10 years of success?

  • I've seen this debated on other boards, but not yet here. I went back a few pages and didn't see anything but didn't even know how to start searching the whole forum.

In an argument on Facebook with an osu fan now. He says:

" I have 0 problem with college athletes selling their own merchandise or awards they earned for money, tattoos, or whatever else they want. That's wrong because the ncaa says so? They are "student athletes"? The ncaa is a non-profit organization yet makes billions of dollars off television contracts? They are a walking contradiction and have 0 credibility. So yes, I have absolutely no problem with what went down. Had Tressel been upfront about it, the players would have been suspended and that would have been the end if it. That is why the program got in trouble. The ncaa is a sham. At any rate, we have to sit out a bowl game this year but reload the roster. Works for me. Good luck rest of the conference in 2013 and beyond."

Followed with: "Oh, and I'm pretty sure Auburn fan had no problem buying a national championship, SEC fan playing with rosters full of kids who got into school because the admissions department bends the rules, and USC fan for sitting out 2 years and now being preseason #1."

First of all, it's disgusting that a fan would happily compare his program to the 2010 Auburn Tigers.

But before all of this, he said that he'll happily take a 1 year bowl ban and slight sanctions in exchange for the run osu has had going back to 2002.

So I ask, would you take several B1G Championships, a national title, and an 8-1 record against osu in exchange for a 1 year bowl ban at some point and a reduction in scholarships?

  • Hell no. A man has two things in this world, his word and his balls, and he shouldn't break either of them for anyone.

The luster of championships fades, but the stink of illicit behavior and an utter lack of integrity follow a program around. I think one of the things that Michigan can hang its hat on is that there has never, EVER been a HINT of recruiting impropriety. If anything, we've been victimized by such impropriety (Goodbye, Sammy Watkins).

I'd rather win the right way, or not at all. I value Michigan as a gold standard for the way an organization should carry and conduct itself - there's a reason no other school has the famous standard of "a Michigan Man." The university and this football program have been built on generations of high-character, high-quality young men, and I wouldn't trade 10 years of success for a black mark on that record in a million years.

The day Michigan stoops to Ohio State's level is the day I stop proudly wearing the Maize and Blue.

You really think people respect Miami's success over the years? No, because they are all tainted.

  • I figured as much. It's mind boggling that there are fans who would have it that way. When he compared them to Auburn I about lost it. I just feel like in the B1G we should be above all of that.

We did our undergrad at Xavier and I asked him if he'd trade a Xavier Final Four appearance for some sort of impropriety in getting there, but have yet to get a response.

  • I'm sure I'm in the minority on this; don't stone me. But I've always been a football fan who just happens to bleed blue. The whole cheating accusation never really sat well with me. I played HS and college ball and we never wanted to make excuses for what happen on the field. Not excusing what ohio proliferated year after year in their negligence in player oversight, but what happen on the field was not cheating. Yes, they were using players who should have been ineligible, but when i think of cheating I think of spy-gate with the Patriots. Now that we have the coaches I firmly believe the tide will shift in the coming years, who knows perhaps if Hoke and co arrived a few years sooner we wouldn't have had Ohio dominate us over the past years. It just rubs me wrong as a football player and fan when we say cheaters, just seem like an excuse when in reality we were beat on the field (albeit with likely ineligible players). As a football player and UM fan, accountability is key. They got us in the past but we got them last yr, we'll get them this yr and the next yr.

  • No, rules are rules and they should be followed. But I completely agree with him that the NCAA and the partner universities have zero credibility and are a bunch of thieving hypocrites. There is precisely no reason kids shouldn't be allowed to sell merch or get endorsements or w/e they want to do.

I stopped reading your post at 'balls' and rewarded you with an up-vote.

Also, there is nothing of lesser morals than drawing parallels to ohio. Therefore, the answer is an emphatic NO.

  • First I really do not think you have seen this debate/question here is because most the people here I believe are like me. I could really careless about ohio except for 1 week or one Saturday a year. I rarely go to the other recruiting sites anymore because of all the ohio trolls and would like to keep this site clean.

Second I disagree with the NCAA on the whole tattoo scandal. The kids sold their own property for those tattoos. I do not see what the issue was. I ran X-country and track in college. People can say what they want about a free education as a student athlete but when you are broke you are broke and being a competitive athlete takes more time than just a 40 hour week. I often wonder if It would of been easier to just work my way through school. I really think it would of been easier then again in secondhand sports there is not a professional career when school is over.

Third and most importantly. Cheating is cheating no matter what you gain from it. How can you brag, talk smack, or even be remotely proud of your accomplishments knowing they were achieved by deceit, lies, and corruption of the rules? To me it is not worth it and just down right dirty. If you are looking for justification for what your program did or what it stands for I am sorry but you will not get it from me.

2nd - good post pappy. I only disagree in that Al Capone was busted for taxes, but that was not his worst offense.

But...but...if college athletes were allowed to sell their own property...people might pay them too much for it! Intentionally! And that would be like paying the athletes for their performance! God forbid we let those kids get any cut of all the money they produce...

    inuyesta

  • Look, you're forgetting that this boils down to recruiting advantages which equal wins down the line. Kids know you can get paid at osu, so they decide to commit there. They sell their stuff, Tressel covers it up, and the cycle continues. It's cheating, plain and simple.

They get a free education from one of the top schools in the country.

    They are definitely getting paid.

For example, if I got a full ride myself to Michigan, I would be saving my self around $200,000 for four years since I am out of state. That is mad cash.

I feel no sympathy whatsoever for them not getting paid. If they want to make money playing football right after, they can join a semi-pro team.

yeah, at Michigan or one of the handful of universities that have all three of (1) a good academic university in general (2) a good football program and (3) enough integrity to actually give a censored about their athletes' academics. But take a look at the top programs in each BCS conference...how many programs actually fit that bill? I'm thinking its like Michigan, Stanford, Texas, Notre Dame, and USC along with maybe UCLA and Cal, and that's pretty much it. Throw in a few schools like Duke, Vanderbilt, etc if you get rid of the "have a good football program" requirement. But for the other 100 or so FBS programs? That argument holds no water at all.
