Withers and North Carolina

  • So OSU's new DC is getting torn apart by the Missouri offense in the Independence bowl. Maybe unfair to use this as a measuring stick, but man, they don't look impressive at all on defense.

  • pretty small sample dude, he has put some great defenses together over the years.

  • Good. Is he on the sideline for this game?

    Yup. Interim coach.

I know about sample size...I said it may be unfair to judge. Still, they look bad.

  • Yeah not looking good for him. But he isnt calling the Dfensive plays and their whole coaching staff except for Withers knows about their future. Im sure thats not helping them prepare on their minds but no excuses NC is just getting it handed to him.

  • I would attribute a lot of it to this being such a pointless bowl game and so many players not giving a full effort. You can see them actually running at half speed its ridiculous. Also, he is not running the D this year as he has in years past. He has consistently put a great D on the field. This is a bad game on his resume, but not too alarming.

    foubazzi

  • They just put up 500 yards of offense on that D.

    buttesnake

  • I guess you can write it off as just end of the year, they don't care. Kind of like RichRod last year. Though I believe, even before this game, North Carolina was something like 40th...after this game, they are likely in the 60s.

headslap lol dude stop making us look bad.

I think Withers will have a good to great D once he works with the talent at tOSU. In 2009 when he had top talent NC's D was 6th in the country.

    Where? When?

I looked up his stats the other day for the past four years (the years he has been DC at North Carolina) and they are unimpressive. Specifically, North Carolina has averaged 35th in total defense over the period.

That would be Heacock's defense not Fickel's. Tressel and Heacock were your two best coaches over the past 20 years and you are losing them both at the same time. Good luck with that. cry

It isnt a talent issue with UNC. Just look at how many folks theyve put in the league lately and will be in the next couple years. For all Butch Davis' faults Talent Evaluation was not among them. To say itd be a step up in talent at osu would be a stretch

Exactly. They have had as many players drafted over the past three or four years as Ohio. And I don't know what these crazy Nuts are smoking, but the loss of Heacock is a huge deal. Whatever. if they want to believe that Withers is an upgrade, let 'em.

Jim Heacock hired Urban Meyer way back when. They're friends. If Meyer thought he was the best man for the job, he'd have kept him. I'll trust his assessment over who is a better DC over yours--despite your track record of prolific posts.

You can believe anything you want. It doesn't make it true.

Heacock was at Ohio before the Vest was hired. The Vest promoted him to DC and Ohio had top 10 defenses almost every year he was in charge of that side of the ball. In comparison, Withers had middling to poor defenses his entire career as DC. Even if you ignore his time at Minnesota, his defenses averaged 35th at North Carolina. And did you see that abortion of a defense he put on the field against Mizzou last night? Mizzou put up over 40 points and 500 yards (337 rushing!). It was a low point even for the Tar Heels.

But I am sure you are right. A position coach who is disgruntled because he was not offered the HC position and is even being forced to share duties as DC (Fickell), his best friend whose only coaching experience was this year for an underperforming defensive team (Vrabel) and a middle-of-the-road DC from the relatively weak ACC (Withers) are clearly an upgrade from Jim Heacock. Honestly, I was ecstatic to see Tressel get canned, but the idea of being rid of both Tressel and Heacock is close to orgasmic. In a couple of years, Ohio will be lucky if it is indistinguishable from Illinois.

Edit: Jim Heacock's defensive rankings ...

    2010: 4th
    2009: 5th
    2008: 14th
    2007: 1st
    2006: 12th
    2005: 5th
    Average: 7th

    MrWoodson:

Please share your information with Urban Meyer! It appears he's made a huge (and obvious) mistake! You are ALL over this--how could he be so wrong?

If you are anything other than a big time coach who posts on message boards in your spare time then you are really wasting your talents!

It's a message board meant for people to express their opinions. If you don't like somebody's opinion, don't read it. If you don't agree, why don't you post a meaningful counterpoint instead taking potshots?
