Wilton Speight invited to Under Armour AA Game

  • Happy for the kid. Hope he turns out to be top 3 QB in the class and shuts Dilfer up at the Elite 11 if he's invited.

People knocking him for being a "no body". I just don't think just anyone gets AA game invites.

Devil's advocate post - and this one actually made a little sense.

Another poster elsewhere suggested that he got the invite BECAUSE he committed to Michigan (the comment was "you can bet that if he committed to Toledo, he wouldn't have this invite"). Considering he isn't really on any scouting service's radars (broken collarbone), it's a fair perspective shrug. Might not be entirely accurate, but I see WHY he said that.

Not sure if people are knocking him per se; they were simply in favor of known commodities, like Cornwell. They simply weren't familiar with Speight. That's why I said I'm personally curious about how he'll perform at some of the combines, considering 1. he missed an entire year, 2. he was being pursued prior his injury, and 3. he works out with Clarkson.

  • Anyone know how many QB's have been offered a spot in the UA game already?

Yes, I am now believing we are all in for a surprise with him.

  • The more I watch and think about Speight the more excited I get about him.

His arm is deadly accurate by the looks of it, his touch on the balls also looks quite good. Sure his rocket arm doesn't jump out on film, but he throws some fastballs IMO. 6'6 and a big frame, I'm sure his arm will get stronger as he continues to workout.

Plus Speight shows decent mobility and good pocket awareness. He avoids the rush and can throw on the run. He also throws accurately even in the face of pressure.

    true statement.

I will be the first to admit that i was a little shaky about him when he first committed and took away the spot that I wanted Cornwell to have. Honestly though, since he has committed, he has been a great recruiter, leader, and spokesman for the University we love. I couldn't be happier with him being our QB in this class. Not only do I trust the coaches with his talent but the coaches know how good it can be to have your QB locked up early and out recruiting for you. Just like Morris did before him he is out doing his best to create a great class around him. If other recruits were shaky on him and his abilities just like we were I think this invite puts that to rest regardless of him being a Michigan commit.

I think Cornwell would have been a great recruiter as well but I love what Speight is doing and honestly Im a big fan of his game. Doesn't hurt that he comes from a eastern hot bed of talent that we are trying to lock in to.

Ya i think he will have great arm strength has he continues to develop. He had surgery so Im sure that took a lot out of him. He's gonna be a good one.

  • Stupid question - is it pronounced "spate" or "spite"?

I'm not sure why, but I always thought it was "spate," though I can't remember where I got that from.

    EDIT: Got it from here:

I guess that'd make the most sense, as it's kind of like "weight"

Will Grier, who is committed to Florida, and Justice Hansen who looks like a lock for Oklahoma have gotten invites as far as I can tell.

It definitely helps to be committed early to a program with a big fan base.

Yeah, but English is all like "eat me, common sense" so we also have to consider "height" and "sleight."

However, you're right, the vast majority of "-eight" words use the "ate" sound, so I'll go with that. If Sam Webb calls him "spate," that's good enough for me.

Hopefully this time our fans will remember these events are NOT kind to QB's, so even if Wilton struggles in the game we shouldn't go jumping off cliffs.

Unlikely, if he struggles the Same people that freaked out about morris will b saying speight is no good lol
