Wilton Speight Vs. David Cornwell

That doesn't make any sense in terms of the conversation at hand.

It applies to my conversation of those who watch him throw live vs. those who watch him throw on youtube. If you were stating this for the OP then nevermind.

Nonetheless, it never hurts to remind people that logic is king.

I am the OP. I used to be on the BlueBoard when there was just the Michigan Thread with ScoutExile and the other people that have been year for long.

I decided to shut down my Scout account and start back up over on the 247 boards again. I just was signed into a different account, and I'm not sure why I have so many random accounts over here. huh

Why are you using two accounts, OP?

    I'm confused.

Are you ScoutExile, Blizzard and the OP? Or just the latter two?

Just the latter two. But that's the last I remember of Michigan on 247. biggrin

  • Cornwell's offer list is littered with trustworthy opinions. He has offers from Alabama, VaTech, Oklahoma St, Auburn, along with notable smart offensive guys Butch Jones, Kevin Wilson, and Mike Leach.

Speight is only showing his Michigan offer on every site. Is he not reporting them, or is he not getting them?

Not getting them, why would a school offer when they know he's 100% Michigan?

The UA offer was encouraging, also agreed that he has picked up some of the moxie that Shane had in terms of recruiting others.

If you are the lone QB in the recruiting class of what may be the most obsessive fanbase in the nation, you will be getting an all-star game invite. Tell me you all won't be tuning in,

    bkp1883

  • I'm glad we have Speight. He's doing a great job recruiting for Michigan.

    Don't be silly.

Every school offers kids who are 100% committed. Shane Morris had a decent number of offers, probably a lot more than he reported.

  • Speight's injury and shift to 2014 class put everything on hold. And then he committed the second he could to us. So offers may not be a good gauge of where he is at.

Again. unless you think the coaches are idiots, Speight is probably a top 10-20 QB nationwide, and maybe higher. Maybe Cornwell is higher ranked, most likely is. But some of you talk like Hoke et al are morons.

  • If Cornwell was ready to commit he would have call UM first thing in the morning on NSD like Speight did. Speight wanted it more.

The jury is still out on the guy responsible for the QBs, and we can be pretty sure that Hoke defers to him a great deal.

They told him to call in the afternoon

  • Yes, very concerned, Borges's track record with QB's hasn't been good at all.

  • While I am sure ex-UM football players comments here, armchair recruiters like me have simple comments.

    1. Offers 'can be' a way to gauge interest and/or vindication of a players skills and abilities. Assumption is other coaches evaluate effectively. Multiple data points (offers) can be ranked based on a set of criteria. This, offers and the quality of offer matter.

    2. Cornwall was not committing so soon. He may have liked UM, but was not pledging to us in Feb. it is clear the coaches wanted a Morris-esque QB to help with recruitment. It is foolish to think Speight is not playing a role with Harris recruitment. He is doing so.

    3. The coaches saw him throw. The coaches spoke with 3rd parties that have watched him throw. Who am I to disagree?

    4. Speight was hurt and needs to rekindle his momentum. Recruits ups/downs move fast and Speight needs camps, competition to show his skills after the injury.

  • i'm not terribly high on speight, but there is no doubt he has all the intangibles you want.

and that really is hoke's modus operandi.

    Does this concern anyone else?

Cornwell had 5* status and is the 18th best player in the nation while Speight is the 31st ranked Pro-Style QB and ranked an 86. With many players ranked above Speight that aren't drawing interest from anyone close to as prestigious as Michigan.

Cornwell was (IMO) ready to commit had we offered him on National Signing Day and we opted to offer Speight and trust the coaches.

Is anyone concerned that maybe Borges whiffed on this and we didn't offer the right one? Or what do our coaches see in this kids that national pundits and recruiting analysts don't?

I remember when we did the first interview with Wilton before anybody back in December (on Tremendous), and wondered why he wasn't getting the pub that some of the other targets were getting.

I'll try to find the comment, but when he committed, someone from our WVU affiliate made a point to come over and talk about how great he was at some off-season workouts and that he was very underrated ranking-wise. Seeing him get the Under Armour invite, not to mention the coaches watched him throw, should make everyone feel more than comfortable in the choice. Not only because of his abilities, but his enthusiasm and the embracing of Michigan that he's undertaken since committing. An excellent choice all-around.

    This^!!!!

I will agree that I wanted Cornwell at the beginning. I think that Cornwell would have been a Wolverine and would have represented Michigan well. With that said Speight has done an amazing job and is a true Michigan man. I am very happy with the pick up. Having your QB committed early to recruit is a great thing and I'm glad the Speight is that guy.
