Will Meyer be left with scraps at OL?

  • neoavatara said...

Pouncey was the exception, not the rule.

Of course it is. (rolls eyes)

Because Pouncy is the only offensive lineman from a Meyer team in the pros.

    Oh wait.....

Outside of the Pouncey's, I see Florida as having three other linemen in the NFL from Meyer's tenure:

Marcus Gilbert, who was drafted 63rd but got some good playing time.
Maurice Hurt, who was drafted in the 7th round, who bounced around a bit before getting a chance to start due to injuries.
Phil Trautwine, an undrafted free agent who has bounced between practice squads.

The Pouncey's do seem to be a bit of an outlier.

you guys are doin great recruiting the State of Ohio right now. Way to go! just one question...is this because Michigan is having a down year or do you always look to Ohio for the talent? You seem to have quite a few more Buckeyes on your team than Ohio State has Wolverines...just asking, not trying to flame out here or anything.peace

Traditionally Michigan is half michigan players. A third from ohio. The rest from all over.

  • The reality of the OL conundrum for OSU and the rest is that no one could have anticipated that all these guys would commit that early and all together. Kind of unheard of

  • I think with a spread offense though you don't really need an entire O Line full of great blockers. I think you can get away with some of it because of the speed of the offensive style itself. If you run a roll out, option, stretch play, etc.; there is no way the D Line on the backside will catch the play from behind. Thats why I think you see this a lot in Urban's system back at Florida. A lot of lineman downfield blocking second tier guys or atleast gettin in their way. HOWEVER, I do believe it makes a difference in the make up of your team. I don't see OSU being as tough and mean as they used to be with a power running game and big Defense. I think they will be susceptible to power running games and play action. It will start to look like Michigan of 2010 with the question being can OSU offense score more points than the D gives up. Maybe not on the same level, but same concept. goblue

Exactly. The other guys are basically nobody's...no offense to them. Pouncey is a star. He is the outlier.

  • Only think I know of the 2nd Pouncey is that every time they went to shotgun in Florida he threw it over the QB's head.

Those ratios actually vary quite a bit from year to year. Take a look at the 2007 class. Out of 20 total commits, 5 were from MI and zero were from OH. What is consistent is that Michigan goes after the talent, wherever it is.

  • I just read over on Mgob that Pocic called Funk and asked him if Michigan would still take his commitment. I guess he was told yes. The original info came from Wolverine Nation and TomVH. Pocic to UM and Biven to ND, man, there aren't even going to be scraps left.

That would be epic. My homer buckeye coworker thinks Ohio will get both. +1

  • Are there any of the 5 current lineman that may be ran off by the addition of someone like Pocic? They all seem to be blue-collared guys who know they'll have to work for everything they get, but I don't know as much about '13 recruits yet.

Doubtful. Fox, LTT, and Pocic would be the tackles, and I doubt any are afraid to compete.

Possible. That is the downside of this...but how do you turn away Pocic?

True. I don't want any of these guys to leave, and frankly, I would be a little surprised if any do. But, you want the five or six guys least afraid to compete, because ultimately, they are going to be the best players.

After all this...I always thought the 'OSU OL scraps' storyline was a joke...but maybe it could actually come to fruition? If they were to lose out on Bevins, Pocic, etc...wow. I still don't believe it...but...stir

  • Bivins won't be at ND this weekend. His bball team knocked off the #1 team in KY tonight. Really sucks for us. He was on committment watch. He's already been to campus 5 times and was bringing his mom for her first visit. I'm guessing he'll reschedule for the JR Day later this month.

By saying "Tiillman, Kugler, Fox, Bosch, Dawson" a few times and then thinking about making roster spots for three of Gedeon, McCray, O'Daniel, and Levenberry.

I get that Pocic is a fantastic player and would be a great addition, but this staff told recruits they were taking five, and we can be sure that Pocic will not be the last high-caliber player that will part ways with Michigan because there isn't room.

I think we would take the 4 LBers. McCray seems to have the size and ability to play TE or DE if needed. The others have too much talent to let walk also, you find room for them.

I don't want log jams at any of the positions. So I would take 3 LB and no more OL. I don't care if they are 5* or not. You have a great core, there is no need for more. After Fitz goes at RB...there is no one else on the roster decent to me. I would take 2 more RBs beside Shallman (Issac and someone else) and go for 2 more receivers.

  • The problem for the year will be staying on all these kids. The sooner they can wrap up this class, the quicker they can start on '14 ,but really stay in the ear of the current commits. The #1 negative recruiting tactic will be NO PLAYING time...ur a 5* we have you topof the board and you are going to go there and sit?

Perhaps. McCray and O'Daniel can both play on the other side of the ball.

Whatever the case may be, I think this staff has a recruiting plan that called for five OL commits, I think the plan is going amazingly well. As good as Pocic may be, I just don't think it would be very hard to say "Sorry we're full" if he doesn't fit into their positional goals.

    Agreed on Pocic.

I look at it this way. We told the other Olinemen that we were taking 5. We have those 5 now. If we take Pocic, we lied to the other 5 and trust issues could start to creep into future recruiting. We let Pocic know that a spot is there, if it opens up, but he knew going in, it was first come first serve.

This plays into other positions also. If for example we told the LBers that we are only taking 2, they know that once one commits, there is only one more spot, commit now or lose your spot. Same with WR, and so on.
