If Lisle commits soon I can't wait to hear how he is so much better than all of Michigan's OL commits this year. I think Lisle's offer was due to LTT and Fox committing.

Not totally true. No rational person can argue with your OL haul. OSU was hoping to offer at camp this summer as there is not alot of film on Lisle pass blocking due to the offense his school runs. Bama jumped in last night with an offer and that prompted the Bucks to speed things up. But sure you guys have 10 OT's in this class so we better get in on somebody.

Meyer has offered only 9 offensive linemen so far.

OL Logan Tuley-Tillman Committed to MichiganOL Chris Fox Committed to MichiganOL Jake Raulerson Committed to TexasOL Hunter Bivin OL Evan Lisle OL Ethan Pocic OL Marcell Lazard OL John Montelus OL Derwin Gray

All of the uncommitted, except Gray, have Michigan offers, and they all have a ton of offers from other fine schools. Hoke still has a spot open. What's going to happen here, will Meyer do well with these guys or is he going to have to go to plan B?

Meyer better hurry because 5 of the top 8, and 8 of the top 14 OTs have already committed. Also, 2 of the top 3 OGs have committed.

I like our chances at Lisle , Bivin and Pocic...

  • Hello, my screen name is Richard Parker and I am a crazed Buckeyes fan. That being said I like to keep discussions civil and am interested in different perspectives even if I get hit with some shrapnel just for posting here.

I saw some questions regarding what OSU looks for in OLs. My impression is Meyer is really driving the bus here more than Warinner. Having listened to and read a countless number of interviews at this point what Meyer is very clear on is he has a prototypical OL - "long, lean" guys. He really focuses on that body type. In fact, there are three OLs on the current roster who he has on pretty severe weight loss programs, and at least one is at risk of being kicked off the team for lack of progress. Moreover, one of the TEs, Reid Fragel, is being moved to OT this year, so there's a lot of evidence to support Meyer's strong preference for that body type.

I don't, and I don't think most Buckeye fans would, dispute the fact that you guys are crushing it with OL recruiting this year. You've really landed an incredible haul so congratulations. I consider OL the biggest need for OSU this year, so the haul stings twice as much for me as it would for any other position. OSU really needs to land some solid OL guys soon in my mind to give some momentum and help with skill player recruiting.

You guys are the experts here, but why do you think you've been able to recruit the OL so well and quickly this year on top of a solid year last year, especially relative to a lot of your other position needs? Did these guys all know each other, is Morris a huge recruiting ringleader that's been pulling the class together, is it the style of offense that is appealing, lifelong Michigan fans, etc.? I'd love to hear your takes.

I honestly do think that most Buckeye fans genuinely don't mind losing the other Ohio guys you've signed, though, with the exception of Thomas. Way, way before Taco committed to Michigan there were threads on Bucknuts expressing how overrated he was as a player and how he was disappointed he wasn't getting any love from OSU's current or prior staff. At WR, we've already got Marshall (probably some sort of hybrid RB/WR), looking great with Gibson and have a solid shot with Foster, with optionality in a few other places so Dukes wasn't considered a loss. He wasn't even on the radar. People think we're likely to get Heuerman (brother plays at OSU) with a very outside shot at Breneman so no loss with Butt. We offered Shallman, but with very limited schollies and with our 2012 DE haul, personally I'm somewhat glad he didn't fill a spot. In my mind either we get a top, top guy there or no-one. Any of these guys you took could turn out to be fantastic and could fill needs for Michigan that did or didn't exist for OSU, but if you think that OSU fans just have sour grapes b/c these players committed to Michigan I just don't think that's accurate.

I think the driving force behind our recent OL hauls have been a combination of immediate playing time, the return to a pro-style offense, UM's history of putting OL into the NFL, and Shane Morris. Shane has been in the ear of most of the nation's (specifically the Midwest's) top players for a while now and is building an excitement like nothing I've ever seen before. The kids that have committed are totally buying into the team and being able to represent the University of Michigan.

As for Taco and Dukes, I'm glad they decided to come here but they're obviously projects, Taco especially. They have great physical gifts but haven't been able to put it all together for whatever reason yet (then again they are only Jr.s in HS so they have plenty of time to learn). Both of them will probably redshirt and put on muscle/strength and learn the nuances of their position. If they live up to their potential they should fit perfectly into what we are trying to do here. Thanks for the classy post and questions.

Also, as far as the "lean and long" OL thing is concerned. Rich Rod tried something similar here with some very mixed results. Even though I'm sure Urban will do a better job than him it's not something I'd be excited to hear as a fan of a B1G football team. This is also why him going hard after players like Dunn (and Dunn still committing to OSU) was somewhat confusing, the smaller and quicker lineman may open more small creases but bigger backs like can't exploit those as well as smaller quicker backs. A back like Dunn is best when he has a good hole to hit and then to take on a LB or DB head to head instead of squeaking through small gaps and then beating guys to the outside. Why yes I am still bitter about it, why do you ask?

I'll be curious how running the spread impacts your OL recruiting, because I think our move toward a pro style with more of a power running game has also aided our OL recruiting. It doesn't matter to all OLinemen, but I think a lot of them prefer that stye.

  • Smitdog, thanks for the thoughts.

Taco and Dukes unquestionably have great looking measurables in terms of height, weight and decent speed. I've heard gripes that Taco is somewhat lazy but really can't attest to that myself. No doubt that attitude won't fly in college if true. I don't want to pick on the fellow, though. I don't even know him. It will be interesting to see how those two pan out, for sure. I generally love seeing 3 star guys rise at the college level, although I like it a lot more when they play for OSU and don't like it at all when they play against OSU!

I do have to give Meyer some benefit of the doubt on the long and lean strategy. It seems like NFL teams have been moving more in that direction for one, but more importantly he's been able to hone OL theories against top SEC teams. Nobody is more sick of hearing about SEC superiority than me, but I have to stipulate that their DLs generally have been meaningfully superior to Big 10 DLs over the last several years.... if admitting nothing else. They certainly shredded OSU's OLs in the National Championship games, though I'd argue we won the war in the trenches against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Still, Meyer did a great job containing those DLs at Florida, so something is working with his OL strategy. We just need to get the players now. Also, OSU's OL has underperformed for years now for a variety of reasons so I'm glad to see a new sheriff in town.

I'm not sold on the other Rich Rod / Meyer concept of the small, speedy back, but I think Meyer has come to the realization that you also need a big RB who pounds the rock to be successful against the best defenses post the loss to AL in the SEC Championship. At least that's what he's been saying for a while now.

clap a little overboard with the "experts" statement. Why isn't tOSU after Matuska?

I don't have a great answer on Matuska. Guess Meyer likes something about Heuerman more and thinks there is some shot at Breneman. Generally, Meyer really is looking for the next Aaron Hernandez at TE. He wants a guys with speed and athleticism to put the ball in their hands. That seems a lot more important than a great blocking TE from what I can see. I'm not sure what Matuska's relative strengths are, but that could be the distinguishing factor between him and Heuerman in Meyer's mind. Maybe Matuska just hasn't been offered yet, as well. Beats me.

Generally speaking, I think Meyer is focused is trying to find similar guys to ones who have excelled on his teams in the past. He's always talking about finding the next Percy Harvin, Hernandez, Alex Smith, Pouncey twins type players, etc.

That's a fair point. Our previous OL coach, Jim Bollman, just seemed to give up over the last few years and I'm willing to bet formed very few, if any, 2013 class relationships. That's probably hurting us with early signings on the OL at a minimum.

I think you'll see much more of a power running game under Meyer than conventional wisdom would hold. Certainly much more than under Rich Rod at Michigan. Meyer just wasn't getting the big RBs down in FL for whatever reason so was forced to use Tebow in the role. I think he also is haunted by the loss to AL in the SEC Championship and has taken lessons away from it. He's talked a lot about having a power running game for sure and seems focused on it, as are the OCs. Pro-teams also are pretty pass heavy these days, so Meyer probably stresses that aspect to OL recruits is my guess.

I appreciate the compliment. So far, posting here has been a great experience.

Every board has their share of flamers, for sure. I see Michigan ones pop up on the Bucknuts board all the time. Just keep in mind the OSU boards are much bigger than probably any of the other 247 team boards I can think of so that naturally leads to a higher count of OSU flamers, even if the percentage of flamers isn't higher. I actually don't mind the flamers in moderation even when they are incoming b/c there's an element of adding to the heated rivalry spirit. Think how worked up people get over a few lines of text! Its a bit crazy in itself. That's just not how I roll, though, especially on another team's board.

He did get some very good RB recruits at Florida actually. It seemed like he pulled in at least one 4 or 5* every year and while most were smaller he did grab a few with good size. Obviously having a player like Tebow is going to hold your RB's back but the lack of production he got from that position is pretty staggering given the talent he brought in. I'm not saying that he can't or won't be able to develop RB's better at OSU than he did at Florida but to paraphrase Rick Pitino, "Tim Tebow isn't walking through that door. Percy Harvin isn't walking through that door." Also, anybody that has been paying attention knows the SEC is superior to the B1G right now but what worked down there won't necessarily work up here.
