Will Meyer be left with scraps at OL?

  • I'd imagine Johnson (and the others) were aware that they still had a hearing about the situation, and it didn't sway them from committing to O'Brien. I don't think this will hurt their chances at all w/ the guys they have on board, w/ guys considering PSU it may be damaging to have all this rehashed.

I don't see it happening. The players seem to like O'Brien.

Yeah, I think this'll be a major factor. Many of the guys last year were committed to JoePa, and his firing and the subsequent scandal threw everything out of whack. At least the guys this year are committed to BoB, and have been from the start, so there won't be any major coaching change to mess things up. I'm hoping there won't be any flips to OSU, and I'd be willing to bet BoB sat down and had a nice long talk with every recruit about what might happen in the upcoming months/years.

That being said, I also have a hard time believing that the NCAA will take any action against PSU before NSD 2013.

  • Sandusky was convicted and shortly after, Dorian Johnson committed to PSU. As horrible as this crap was, most of our recruits see themselves as distanced from the situation.

The thing is, right or wrong, kids often believe sell jobs. Look at USC - they're doing alright, despite sanctions and scholarship limits. Buckeyes have a bowl ban and they're doing just fine. UNC has scholarship sanctions and kids don't seem to mind.

In fact, PSU lost Ryan Switzer to UNC. Know what he said? He commented that UNC's scholarship offers were special because they didn't have as many spots. That's one way of looking at it. Never mind the fact that at the time, UNC had offers out to twice as many prospects as PSU did. Kids buy crap like that, and even with scholarship sanctions, coaches can twist it to seem positive. Crazy, but true.

Amen. I love that OSU is already out of the running though. With the way they're hyping 2014 already, it'll be a big Bucknut disappointment if OSU doesn't land McMillan, Booker, and Garrett, at the very least.

Nailed it with this point. I laugh at sanctions when it comes to recruiting. The bowl-bans don't affect recruiting at all and limited scholarships just allow programs to sell exclusivity because joining a smaller class is somehow special to recruits. Gives them an advantage, in a way.

Yeah, as much as we make fun of them for OLs, OSU has also whiffed on all its top LB prospects: Gedeon, Anzalone, Jaylon Smith, Love, Tim Kimbrough...

Missing on Smith was huge. His brother plays at OSU and to lose him to ND, a program that has not had a decent defense in 20 years, must drive them crazy.

Disappointment? Those are three of top 10 LB in the country next year. Getting one of them would be nice. Two would be outstanding. Three would be unheard of. There is a small chance we pull McMillan from Georgia. Booker would be the biggest hit if we couldn't get him. Garrett would hurt a little too because apparently he is close with Mike Vrabel.

And whomever said we missed on Kimbrough. Seriously? We never offered him a scholarship, told him he was low on our board and somehow that's a whiff. That is a tad delusional.

I honestly don't think you can call it a whiff if you never think you can get a recruit. Anzalone sure that's a miss (I'm not sure what you call that actually). Pocic that's a big miss. Courtney Love was a miss. But to say someone like Smith is a whiff. The kid didn't even want to go to the same high school as his brother Rod, why would we ever think he'd want to go to the same college. Ohio State never really had a chance. Sure Ohio State has missed on some prospects they wanted, but honestly who doesn't? ... except USC.

All you have to do is read the early threads on Bucknuts and other OSU boards regarding Jaylon Smith. Not only did you guys desperately want him, you thought he was a near lock. That slowly changed to a competition with ND for him (which most OSU fans expected to win) and then finally to acceptance you weren't going to get him. Saying now that you never wanted or expected to land him is just silly.

HAH! Alright, I'm going to dismantle you slowly, efficiently, and completely.

In addressing my first point over the 2014 LBs. While you may have a more realistic perspective over those kids, that's a far cry from the posters in this thread:

    http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Board/122/first-commit-2014-10003030/1

FFS, look at this comment in response to "Who's the first 2014 commit?": "Clifton Garret! LB out of Ill. I would like to see Raekwon McMillian and Booker soon there after."

Next, missing on Kimbrough. You brought up offers - you really shouldn't have done that. Here's a list of every linebacker you've offered for 2013, and where they're committed:

    Jaylon Smith - Notre Dame
    Alex Anzalone - Notre Dame
    Dorian O'Daniel - Clemson
    Matt Rolin - South Carolina
    Mike McCray - Michigan peace
    Deon Hollins Jr. - UCLA
    Ben Gedeon - Michigan rockon
    Peter Kalambayi - Stanford
    Courtney Love - Nebraska
    Yannick Ngakoue - Maryland

So right now, you've whiffed on EVERY SINGLE ONE of the LBs you've offered.

Back to Kimbrough - you never offered him, so clearly that indicates your interest, right? Well guess what - the entirety of Bucknuts is going ape over Mike Mitchell, but you haven't offered him yet either. I guess that means you're not interested in Mitchell? shrug

On top of that, here's not 1, not 2, but 3 threads talking about wanting Kimbrough.

    1. http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Board/122/Tim-kimbrough-9357250/1
    2. http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Board/122/Love-commits-to-Nebraska-9179612/1
    3. http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Board/122/Stop-pouting-we-go-on-9425717/1

Finally, on the topic of Jaylon Smith, here's a thread from Bucknuts entitled "Jaylon Smith should be our #1 target". Boy, it sure sounds like a lot of people thought he had a very, very good chance of going to OSU...

    BOOM.
