Well the fact that Lloyd Carr's offense consisted of, run up the middle, run to the left, run to the right, and a few passes here and there, I'm surprised more teams couldn't stop the offense. Defense does not always trump offense, and it's not like Michigan's defense is bad, held your running game down pretty well last year.

What? Teams that don't play defense?
Plenty of teams are successfully playing the spread in the Big 10. Michigan ran the spread to good success in the Big 10 both under RichRod and under Hoke. Urban Meyer's spread offense is not the same as RichRod's spread offense.
The spread, in all its many flavors, works in the Big 10. Having non-BCS caliber defense and special teams doesn't work in the Big 10.
Unfortunately, I don't think Urban will have all the trouble with defense that RichRod had.

i dont know what you where watching. michigan couldnt move the ball against good defenses. they raked up points on bad teams because they had more offensive positions cause of the no huddle and cause the defense was so bad michigan will get the ball right back on offense cause the other team will score instantly.

The spread offense has repeatedly shown that it can be successful against good teams. Unless you forgot the two teams playing for a NC just a season ago were both spread offenses. I'm sure they got there by beating a bunch of nobodies though right?
I also agree that stats can be misleading. However the fact that the spread is a hurry up offense that allows the offense to run more plays and gain more yards is a pro of the system. The more you "rack up stats" the more points you're typically going to score. And since the offense's job is to score points, that's always going to be a + in my book.
The reason that RR put you in a depression, as I and others have already pointed out, is because of his horrid defenses. Because football is a team game, and you're never going to consistently win just an offense. That's the reason RR failed, it had nothing to do with his offense.

Auburn's defense was the star of the 2011 MNC. Neither offense looked good.
RR's offense put our D in horrible situations. In a hurry up offense it is imperative to either score quickly or at least move the chains. If a team is in hurry up and goes 3 and out then the D barely has a chance to take a sip of gatorade. It has also been proven that spread teams are more prone to turnovers.
Would anyone say Auburn and Oregon are known for good defenses? I'm not sure either team doesn't have equal the D talent as say an OSU for example. But their offenses continually put the D in tough spots. Its high risk high reward.

Will Meyer be left with scraps at OL?
