Will Meyer be left with scraps at OL?

Well the fact that Lloyd Carr's offense consisted of, run up the middle, run to the left, run to the right, and a few passes here and there, I'm surprised more teams couldn't stop the offense. Defense does not always trump offense, and it's not like Michigan's defense is bad, held your running game down pretty well last year.

what about the passing yards. besides yards don't win games points do and we had one of the worst offenses in the country last year and still put up 34 on you,

Yeah, but we put up 40 points on you guys which should have been 44 if the ref was wearing his glasses.

Your offense was schizophrenic the entire season.....being at its worse earlier on with Bauserman, and increasing in competency throughout the season. Your O was completely different in the first 10 games of the season compared to the last 2 games......why was it so different? Because you had players on your team who cheated and violated rules that came back from suspension during the end of the season...when we beat you with your full roster.

That's what's left on Meyer's board. Anybody care to summarize where each one is likely to end up?

With the way Urb is going:
    Gray - not OSU
    Johnson - not OSU
    Rodgers - not OSU
    Vonashek - not OSU
    Latham - not OSU

Of those, the only one I actually see ending up at OSU is Khaliel Rodgers - although I wouldn't be completely surprised if Vonashek did too. However, if Urban wants more than 2 OL in this class, he might have to drop down to an even lower tier.

  • Does this pose an issue for Urbie next year....with the limited scholarships if he wants to attempt to even out any OL loses this year by compensating a few more OL positions next year, that will take away from other positional needs for him.

So absolutely no clue on how accurate this is, but there is a post on Bucknuts that Dorian Johnson committed to WVU. I can't see anything anywhere to confirm this though, so I have a feeling it is someone trolling their fanbase with the Pocic news today.

  • urban might destroy ohio state. rich rod tried bringing in something that does not work in the big ten. i dont think urban will ever have ohio state on the level that jim tressel had them. urbs needs to realize that the first thing is to lock down your own state especially when michigan is taking pretty much anybody they want from ohio. i dont think urbs offense is going to work out in the big ten and he will quit after 4-6 years and go back to the sec. big ten is all about smash mouth football. and it all starts up front with midwest farm boy giant offensive lines.

What? Teams that don't play defense?

Plenty of teams are successfully playing the spread in the Big 10. Michigan ran the spread to good success in the Big 10 both under RichRod and under Hoke. Urban Meyer's spread offense is not the same as RichRod's spread offense.

The spread, in all its many flavors, works in the Big 10. Having non-BCS caliber defense and special teams doesn't work in the Big 10.

Unfortunately, I don't think Urban will have all the trouble with defense that RichRod had.

i dont know what you where watching. michigan couldnt move the ball against good defenses. they raked up points on bad teams because they had more offensive positions cause of the no huddle and cause the defense was so bad michigan will get the ball right back on offense cause the other team will score instantly.

There are other B10 teams that have used the spread pretty much 100% of the time... Purdue and Northwestern are able to stay in whatever games they can, despite half the talent because of their spread offenses.

Michigan ran a spread the vast majority of the time last year and did quite well i'd say... I prefer a pro-style offense, but to act like anybody running a spread offense will be unsuccessful is just not the case.

  • Dorian Johnson - Clearly wants to stay close to home, which makes Penn St. and Pitt prohibitive favorites, with Pitt leading for right now. WVU is recruiting him as hard as anyone and may also stand in front of OSU.

Derwin Gray - Right now looks like a lock to stay on the east coast with the ACC or go south with the SEC. He's been to VaTech, Maryland, Penn St, Auburn, Florida, and I believe Tennessee up to this point, and I think its wide open. OSU has a ton of ground to make up against some elite programs for Gray. I'd say he ends up at Auburn.

Darius Latham - Latham has visited Florida, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, and they are his front-runners. Tennessee is probably on top. OSU hasn't been recruiting him hard, at least up until recently. My guess on this one Tennessee.

Khaliel Rodgers - Has a top six of Connecticut, West Virginia, Ole Miss, Auburn, UCLA and Ohio State. I think this is another guy that Meyer got a late start on and will have to work very hard on. Has made two trips to Auburn and moved his timeline up after the last one. Looking like Auburn for Rodgers.

J.P Vonashek - Has a top five of Georgia, Ohio State, Auburn, Tennessee, and Florida State. OSU offered him last of those top five, but it is still very early. I believe Georgia is the heavy favorite on this one, and thats what I would predict.

Hate to break it to you... but that's just not true. Yes there were a game here and a game there where Michigan's Offense struggled to move the ball against very talented Defenses. That happens no matter what offense you're running.

Michigan's Offense was progressively getting better and during the 2010 season was flat out damn good. Stats back up that statement as well.

In 2010 Michigan was ranked the #2 Offensive FEI team in the nation - A stat that takes into account the defenses you're playing and adjusts rankings accordingly, and also removes garbage time scores and things of that nature. A pretty solid ranking. - The #3 Big 10 scoring offense, the #1 total yardage offense in the Big 10. (Our 4 FG on the year likely have a thing or two to do with that, and is something that has nothing to do with running the spread.)

Our D sucked though.... it was horrible and we all know about it. While I'm far to lazy to dig them up, during the BIG 10 media days last year multiple players from other teams talked about how horrible our D was on tape. Even our own Defensive players have talked about how they were really just out there to supplement the offense during practice and they really don't know what they were suppose to be doing. That's the reason we sucked so much.... not the O.

If you truly believe that OSU's future Offense will fail because you still think the spread can't work in the BIg 10, you're simply lying to yourself.

The spread offense has repeatedly shown that it can be successful against good teams. Unless you forgot the two teams playing for a NC just a season ago were both spread offenses. I'm sure they got there by beating a bunch of nobodies though right?

I also agree that stats can be misleading. However the fact that the spread is a hurry up offense that allows the offense to run more plays and gain more yards is a pro of the system. The more you "rack up stats" the more points you're typically going to score. And since the offense's job is to score points, that's always going to be a + in my book.

The reason that RR put you in a depression, as I and others have already pointed out, is because of his horrid defenses. Because football is a team game, and you're never going to consistently win just an offense. That's the reason RR failed, it had nothing to do with his offense.

Auburn's defense was the star of the 2011 MNC. Neither offense looked good.

RR's offense put our D in horrible situations. In a hurry up offense it is imperative to either score quickly or at least move the chains. If a team is in hurry up and goes 3 and out then the D barely has a chance to take a sip of gatorade. It has also been proven that spread teams are more prone to turnovers.

Would anyone say Auburn and Oregon are known for good defenses? I'm not sure either team doesn't have equal the D talent as say an OSU for example. But their offenses continually put the D in tough spots. Its high risk high reward.

Auburn winning the NC game because their defense stepped up is besides the point.

While I wouldn't be shocked if accurate, can you post that proof that spread teams are more prone to turnovers? I honestly haven't heard that one before. Also a 3 and out is bad for the Defense no matter what, if you run a huddle pro-style offense and go 3 and out... that D has barely had a chance to take a sip of gatorade. The difference is going to be about a minute... not really a drastic impact at the end of the day.

Also, OSU's Defensive talent level has been one of the best in the nation for years. Auburn and Oregon's D don't compare talent wise with OSU... especially Oregon. Not really fair to try to prop them up as a just comparison.
