Will Meyer be left with scraps at OL?

OL Marcell Lazard committed to WVU.

Not to knock the kid, but he's no Tracy Sprinkle.

  • You guys are really on top of our oline recruiting lol. Lazard told Bill that OSU was not ready to let him verbal. I guess he moved on. Nice thread though.

It's April and practically all of OSU's targets are off the board.

I'm sure Lancaster has some stud Oline players for them.

You guys have ONE Oline commit, and all the top Oline recruits except one or two are committed already.

I would be worried if I was you, especially if the top oline recruits on your board are committing to that powerhouse WVU over you guys.

    Keep drinking that kool-aid though.

  • Montelus is quite good. Wish his mother had opened her mind about PSU - he grew up a fan, but she didn't let him consider us. So be it.

I mentioned this on tBB - what does McGlinchey think about ND taking another OL? They supposedly told him there was only one OL spot left. And I have to say - that's a heck of a lot of OT's that ND has taken. How many are seriously going to see the field?

I agree - all the Bucknuts were saying that about our haul (that so many OTs can't see the field), but IMO at least 3, maybe 4, of ours will be OGs. It seems like all of ND's OL are best suited for OT at the moment. They'll be forced to move some of them inside and will end up with 6'6-6'7 guards, which is not ideal at all.

Agree with you - not many of their recruits seem like a fit for the interior. And honestly, while I do think the majority of those guys will stick with ND, I'd be shocked if all of them did. JMO.

Exactly, it'll be interesting to see. Question for you. Who else are you looking at for OL? You seem in good shape (?) for Dorian Johnson (who is awesome, btw). Are you recruiting Pocic at all? I really really really want Pocic to go anywhere but OSU.

We offered Pocic and apparently really like him, but he had no interest. I think we offered right around the time he named his top 10.

Right now we've got one OG (Brendan Mahon), one OT (Andrew Nelson), and are looking to take 1-2 more OT's. Dorian Johnson is obviously the very top of the wishlist, but Derwin Gray is right up there. If we miss on both of those, there's a few plan C guys that we'll probably go after. One might be Sam Zeff, who was at the spring game today. Not sure who the staff will prioritize there. Another guy - 4* Na'Ty Rodgers - might camp at PSU this summer to earn an offer. He already visited and liked it.

So basically, it's Johnson and/or Gray right now, then close up shop. Beyond those two, we're not sure who exactly the staff has next on the list, and hopefully we won't need to find out.

Solid prospects indeed, but most of them project to Tackle, maybe 2 of them to guard.....I guess they didnt need a center for this class b/c i dont see these frames at that position.

We took a kid last year that will play C. The prior 2 classes will have a C.

It was apparent that McGovern's first choice was Michigan but we were full by then. The offers don't really matter because Michigan was full by the time four out of those five guys decided. Of course an ND fan wouldn't take Michigan's O-line pull because anyone is going to like the kids that commit to their school over other recruits, me included. ND also has a problem with not having the balance of interior lineman. They'll most likely have to play a 6-6 kid at OG and that is a tough transition no matter the talent. I said it was a very good pull by ND, and it is. The objective information suggests that Michigan's is preferable.

Don't agree with your first sentence. Michigan just got him on campus first. Read he's always been ND, but who knows. Montelus will be getting a nice bump according to JC. Sounds like Elmer will drop some more. McGovern and Montelus are both ranked way to low, IMO. Montelus is also young for his class. I think it's safe to say that heading into their SR years UM will have the top OL class followed by ND. I think we have a few OL that make huge gains after their SR year.

If I had to guess, Meyer is going to offer these guys next. He's going to have a lot of competition.

Patrick Kugler Mike McGlinchey Colin McGovern Dorian Johnson

That might just be a start.
He will start flipping OLs and other recruits left and right when the season starts. You can count on this.

No worry. Urban Meyer has already flipped a WVU commit a few weeks back, remember?

As far as Urban Meyer is concerned, flipping season hasn't started yet. Flipping season starts when the season starts.

You mean that below average safety? Flipping season? Unless there is another Sex scandal I don't think there will be much flipping for Urban other than his own commits flipping to another school because of OSU's second average season in a row.

    Agreed.
More accurately though, expect flipping to go both ways at Ohio State.

Other than the Pouncey bros how many olinemen from Florida has he put in the nfl?

Just looking at current NFL rosters, it looks like Coach Meyer had 5 OL players he coached (as a HC) on active rosters in the NFL this season. Michigan has 6 right now. With your recent recruiting, that number will probably go up for Michigan over the next 4 years. But, I think it will for tOSU as well. Coach Meyer's spread system uses mobile linemen, but still with pro-style size. Other versions of the spread, Rich Rodriguez's and Oregon's, place a premium on speed over size and end up with smaller linemen as a result.

I think that the recruiting shows where both coaches want to go. It seems like Coach Hoke wants a big, physical road grading offensive line that lets you run like the Badgers and do plenty of play action. That fits with his stated intent to move more pro-style on offense. Coach Meyer wants linemen that can play in space and hold the point of attack. I don't think tOSU will be able to line up and run like the badgers, but it fits well with his idea of getting the ball to athletes in space and moving the pocket to pass. It should be fun watching both systems evolve as we get the players we need and it looks like both are executing on their recruiting goals fairly well.

Urban wants linemen? I couldn't tell by his OL recruiting, he has barely landed any of the prospects he has targeted.
