Will Meyer be left with scraps at OL?

  • TAMUWolverine said...

Yeah, I still wish that we would have made room for Pocic, kid is a good one. Does he have a decision date set? It's just crazy to me that the Midwest is loaded with OL this year and it appears that Urban's having a hard time locking some of them down. I think eventually he'll get some but it looks like some recruits are taking a wait and see approach regarding your OL's scheme and on the field performance JMO.

I think that is Pocic's big hesitation in this. Being in a spread is a different OL mentality.

I havent heard a date yet, so for all I know it could happen fairly soon or all the way til NSD. From my perspective the longer the kid takes the more unsure I become that he would join the Buckeyes. It seems most Buckeye fans (myself included) and our recruiting guys seem to think he is a Buckeye eventually. Now maybe they know something I dont or we just really dont want to think about missing out on our last "big" O line recruit. If he decides to go elsewhere, then we could probably start to call our o line haul fairly weak. Yeah if I was Hoke, I would have made room too, not only is he really good but the effect it would have on your rivals would be strongly felt. I wouldnt want to imagine the meltdown...I hope its a wait and see attitude and that they end up liking what they see. For me, I'll say a lil prayer we land Pocic and start looking to see what the '14 o line kids are looking like-

As much as I'd like to have him and as much as I'd like to see him end up anywhere but Columbus, we can't forget about the kid, himself. If Hoke was selfish and took him just to screw with Meyer, nobody wins there. If Pocic did come on board, he could very well earn a job, but with the last two Oline hauls (assuming everybody signs this year) it's definitely going to be the best of the best on the field every Saturday.

Pocic is a huge need for tOSU, but it is no guarantee that he goes there. However, I do agree it is a big mistake if Michigan told Pocic, "Thanks, but no thanks." You just don't find many guys 6'6 300lbs with athletic ability. Like a famous boxer analyst once said, " A good big guy will beat a good small guy everyday." Passing on guys like Pocic may turn out to be a big mistake, even with the great O-line haul you guys already have.

I wouldnt call it "weak" persay, id just say that Michigans OL recruiting has been very strong. As rivals we always tend to put our strengths out there and call out what we think is weak with the other guy. Lazard and Lisle regardless of stars had pretty nice offer lists. ( 1 or both were offered by MIchigan at some point, right?). I think we will end up just fine OL wise...it wont be an amazing crop of 5 or 6 , 4-5* guys but it will be quality athletes that can contribute. Its still early in the process. These kids all have another year to rise or fall in the rankings, plus we all know some studs cans fail at the next level, while other kids will step up. We will be strong at recruiting some other positions this go round, and perhaps have our "elite" OLine class in '14, but who knows.

I agree with much of what you wrote, but not the part about this simply being a comparison to UM. You also lost out on Bvin and McGovern to ND. To be honest, that was a shocker to me. If you miss on Pocic, you will have whiffed on all of the top OL on your board this year. Lisle and Lazard might work out just fine, but they were not your first choices.

Yeah I agree that w/ out Pocic, we can rightfully question our O line recruiting. I thought we had a good shot at those 2 that went to ND, at least 1 of them, but thats what happens when you recruit quality prospects...ya win some ya also lose a bunch too. Seems we do well at various other positions but for some reason or another not with the O line, at least not this year. Going forward its a concern no doubt but I'll reserve judgement on it til the class is signed and finished.

  • Does anyone know if Michigan pulled his offer? I assume no. The OL we got were ready to commit. Pocic needed/needs more time. I totally doubt Hoke would tell Pocic, No. Like last year we moved on while Pocic insists on waiting. Should the mutual interest cross paths later(its only April). He can still be Blue

No. My understanding is he has been put on hold. Basically, he has been told we don't have room right now but that could change if someone decommits or as we get closer to NSD and miss on some of the other highly rated guys we are currently pursuing. It's hard to imagine that going over well with a highly sought after 17 year-old all the elite FB programs are chasing, but the door has not been closed permanently. At least not by us.

What I have read from multiple sites, including our buddy Tom, is that Pocic was informed there wasn't a scholarship available for him anymore because we are full at OL.

I understand that many recruiting sites have Pocic rated highly, but I don't see any other way the staff could have handled the situation. We don't really have much room in this class for "extra's" and with 5 OLs already committed... Pocic is an extra right now.

That's Elmer, Bivin, McGlinchey, McGovern, and Montelus.

Notre Dame's offensive line haul rivals Michigan's now.

I wouldn't say it rivals ours, but it's certainly a great haul.

  • I remember reading an interview in which Montelus had some good things to say about Michigan; I thought there was a pretty good chance he would commit after he took a visit here.

Then that one mid-February weekend happened, and he was out of a spot.

Solid prospects indeed, but most of them project to Tackle, maybe 2 of them to guard.....I guess they didnt need a center for this class b/c i dont see these frames at that position.

Michigan had offers out to Bivin, Elmer, McGlinchey, and McGovern. Montelus may be better than all four.

I wouldn't trade a single one of Michigan's commits for any of Notre Dame's, but I'm not looking forward to seeing this class of linemen in a few years.

It was apparent that McGovern's first choice was Michigan but we were full by then. The offers don't really matter because Michigan was full by the time four out of those five guys decided. Of course an ND fan wouldn't take Michigan's O-line pull because anyone is going to like the kids that commit to their school over other recruits, me included. ND also has a problem with not having the balance of interior lineman. They'll most likely have to play a 6-6 kid at OG and that is a tough transition no matter the talent. I said it was a very good pull by ND, and it is. The objective information suggests that Michigan's is preferable.
