Who are the top five football players in Michigan history?

  • TheDudeAbides21 said...

You clearly were not following Michigan football back then...

I mean...I was 11, living in Ann Arbor, and at the absolute peak of my "idolizing sports figures" stage of life when Brady had his Orange Bowl against Alabama...trust me, I was following.

The fact remains that from an objective standpoint (and sorry, but that doesn't include "had he started that whole season Michigan would have played for a national title") Brady had a very solid but ultimately unspectacular career at Michigan. You'd never put him anywhere near the top 5 or 10 Michigan players of all time based on his college resume alone.

  • So, nobody remembers Marquise Walker?

Played with three different QB's, in an offense that favored the run with Thomas, then Perry. Played #2 behind Terrell until '01, and still has/had records.

    Certainly worth an honorable mention.

Of course, but I put Edwards, Howard, Terrell, Manningham, Carter all ahead of him. I know, he left Michigan as their all time receptions leader, but these guys stood out more to me.

I would put him in a tier with Streets, Toomer, Avant...

  • 1. Woodson
    2. Harmon
    3. Edwards
    4. Long

I agree with 1. 2 thru 5 are interesting to say the least.

Denard has alot to prove before he even gets a seat at the table imo. He will have his chance this year to right his legacy as a Wolverine.

Yes Denard throws some picks but you can't deny the highlight reel that he is. Also look where he ranks on the passing records and rushing records already...its ridiculous. Can I add John Cooper from ohio to my favorites as well. Man was a blessing.

meh. 20-5 is obviously good, but that's only slightly better than our all-time mark (.800 to .735). Fairly unimpressed by Michigan passing records, we've never had QBs that lit the world on fire statistically, and "attempts" and "completions" are particularly weak records to have. Definitely give him credit for winning the B1G and both his bowl games (esp the one vs. Alabama, won't ever forget that game), but at the same time he couldn't keep Drew Henson off the field.

I mean, Brady had a very solid career at UM, one that anyone should/would be proud of, but there was definitely a reason Brady went in the 6th round and it wasn't just because he showed up at the Combine with a flabby chest.

Yeah the reason is a bunch of guys in the room with comments like you just made. How do you think they feel about it now that he is kicking their censored?

Oh yeah I remember that as well. I was watching the game in a sports bar down here with four Hawkeye fans sitting right next to me. The look on their face when he made that catch was unbelievable. Another game I remember watching at that same bar was the 2004 MSU game. Probably forty Sparty fans there doing a train around the bar when they were whipping us in the first half, probably the most obnoxious thing I have ever seen a fan base do in public. When Edwards made the catch at the end of the third overtime there wasn't one of them left in the bar. PRICELESS!

Man, it seems like everybody has a story about sparty making an ass out of themself during that game. One of my BILs stated he won't ever talk crap during the game again. He hasn't been the same regarding Michigan/MSU since Edwards ripped his heart out.

hello my rival wolverine fans (i come in peace)...

great thread, btw, i was wondering how some of ur all time faves match up with some of ours???

    no flameing, serious comparisons....

woodson > shawn springs (heismann clinches it)

harmon/brady < troy smith, rex kern (heismann and 1 loss to um between them , i think)

    edwards/anthony carter = ginn/chris carter

long < orlando pace (arguably best tackle all ever)

howard > terry glenn (heismann clinches it)

hart, perry, wheatley < eddie george, griffin, wells (3 heismanns clinch it)

    thoughts?

ohhh, forgot jack tatum vs woodson.....close, but i'll still say woodson cuz of the hardware, but that s.o.b tatum could hit!

Harmon >> Troy Smith and Rex Kern combined, no flame.

There is a reason why Harmon is the only player ever to get a standing Ovation from the entire Ohio State Stadium after beating them 40-0. During his final game against Ohio State, he ran for three TDs, threw two passing TDs, kicked four extra points, INT 3 passes, and punted the ball three times for an average of 50 yards. He was that incredible.

He was an Heisman/Maxwell winner and he led the nation in scoring in 1939 and 1940 (has yet to happen again), and he never lost to Ohio State.

Who would make your list? Why?

Tom Harmon .... before his time ... could fly over defenders.
Tyrone Wheatley ... rushes for 200+ yards in bowl games ... does not break a sweat.
Anthony Carter ... could catch anything ... 79' Indiana game.
Steve Hutchinson ... no one made it by him.
    Charles Woodson ... nuff said.

    Coaching staff ... :)

    Bo, Yost, and Crisler.

That single game could put him at #1 the rest of that knowledge is icing lots and lots of icing. What a man!

    lol

I don't know who would be on my list of greatest Wolverines ever, but I do know for a fact that Harmon will always be #1 on that list. Him and Fielding Yost do not get enough credit and respect in these kind of conversations and debate.

    very impressive, for sure!

did not know about his final game and anytime osu fans give a standing ovation to a rival player ya know its big...

i personally would have given t biakabutuka (spelling) one for his performance (most dominant 1 game rushing performance ive ever seen against the bucks)

If you are interested, here is some game film from the 1940 Michigan-OSU game highlighting Harmon.

Tom Harmon against Ohio State - 1940

The only known footage of Old 98's performance against the Buckeyes in Columbus in 1940. Though, there are some highlights missing. In this game, Harmon... *Passed for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns *Rushed for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns *Averaged 50 yards a punt *Scored 4 extra points *Intercepted 3 passes, 1 of them for a 5th touchdown In the closing moments, Fritz Crisler pulled Harmon from the game and 70,000 Buckeye fans actually gave Tom a standing ovation. Harmon won the Heisman trophy the following month.

Little error on my stats here:

He ran for only two rushing TDs, not three like I said earlier. I was confusing myself, he had another TD coming from a returned INT instead.
