Who is he thinking gets fired?

Out of his list of offers in the article (USC, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, Cincinnati, Texas A&M, Washington, Washington State, Hawaii, Oregon State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Michigan State and Indiana) the only one maybe on the hot seat would be Brian Kelly, right?

Kiffin, Stoops, Saban, Muschamp, Sark, Riley, Gundy, and Dantonio aren't getting fired.

A&M, Wasington State, Hawaii, UCLA, and Indiana all just hired new guys for this season, so they aren't going to make an immediate change.

Butch Jones has done OK at Cincy, but maybe put him on the list? And Brian Kelly is the only other coach of a school listed...

  • Hopefully he gets a chance to come back out and meet with the coaches more. Sounds like we have a very good shot here.

I don't have VIP but you are missing Nebraska (since Joe Mathis has stated Neb is his leader). Having lived there and friends with many fans, many people are starting to question Bo Pelini's job security and/or him leaving.

  • Whomever lands Mathis will have to hold his hand academically. Hopefully, this talented kid will dedicate and re-focus his attention in the classroom.

Is SC still after him or has that ship sailed since you grabbed Fitts (or even earlier)?

Good point, and that's a definite topic of discussion. Lane and staff don't have the time (nor the roster room) to monkey around, so getting Fitts' verbal was great, but it's hard to read the mindset from Mathis's recent interview. Hard to tell if he feels slighted, or just has luke warm interest until later in the recruiting process.

If the academics weren't an issue, the Trojan staff would love to have him. Problem is, that Kiffin and Co. can't miss on anyone with the restrictions. They're concentrating on talented kids, but also, kids who are dying to be Trojans...kids who have shown strong adacemic and character traits, and that's how it should be---just like recruits who grew up dreaming to play for UM.

If Ellis McCarthy hadn't pulled a mind-numbing and highly questionable move to commit to fUCLA, Mathis and his decision wouldn't even be a topic at USC. Having Fitts in the house certainly helps though.

Thanks for the insights. Now you've got me kind of worried about his academics - but there's a long time til Signing Day for the coaches to figure that out. Hoping for some UM vs. USC Rose Bowls in a few years!

This isn't the first time I have heard academic concerns mentioned with Mathis.

I haven't seen his transcript, so I really don't know what his grade situation is. That being said, he's got a phenomenal work ethic, and he seems like a sharp kid to me, so I'm confident that he could excel in the classroom once fully focused.

Also, I've talked to/observed several kids that really did need a college to hold their hand academically. I may be misinterpreting what you meant, and if I am, I apologize. But I don't think Mathis is anywhere close to being in that category.

One of our insiders(who's usually on the money) said his grades are pretty bad. He he hasn't completed alot of his core classes or even a math class yet. Word is he tried to commit to SC couple of times but they won't take his commitment due to his grades. Again tifwiw. Also heard heard SC is recruiting DE Jordan Sherit pretty hard and they feel they got good chance at him

Great kid but academic standards are always a deal breaker (pre/post RR) at Mich. It's interesting he's talked about how Nebraska has a program that helps athletes academically.
