The Wolverines picked up their 18th commitment yesterday. Click inside for an in-depth analysis of where Michigan goes from here in the 2013 recruiting class.

  • I feel good about,
    RB, Isaac
    WR, Treadwell
    DT, Poggi
    DL, Augusta

The 1 or 2 other guys that may come it would just be icing on the cake. If we don't nail down any other guys, bank them for next year.

I would be happy with half of those names.

If all four and a couple high 3* join this class, Michigan is definitely gonna be duking it out with Texas and Alabama for best class.

  • The longer it goes, the less confident I am about Poggi. He is friends with Bosch, but didn't a former teammate (Cyrus Jones or something?) sign with Bama last year where he'd have a friend there too? Just don't get a good feeling on that one for some reason...

Opposite to that, I think the longer it goes with Ty the better for us. The glow of the SC visit will wear off and he could realize if he wants to make another trip there how hard it is to plan getting he and his parents out to Cali, compared to how easy it would be to get a quick trip to Michigan.

Treadwell definitely seems like a good guess, but who knows once official visits start happening.

And just for Rico, another name to pencil in..... Berkley Edwards.

Bama will be tough to beat for Poggi, but I feel Michigan and Hoke were in early enough.

For Isaac, his mom sure didn't seem to like the idea of not being able to just up and visit her son if he was in L.A., and she hates flying.

I was going to add Edwards as a late pickup, and to be honest, if the scholly is there, give it to him. Take care of the legacy recruits that show the potential to play at an elite level.

    Thanks Todd, good write up.

I noticed that about the only two things any of the defensive backs you have listed have in common are that they are elite prospects and that Michigan has a very slim chance with any of them. I also don't don't seem to recall Michigan being all that active in handing out scholarship offers to talent that is a tier below. I can only think of one in particular, Hicks, where there seems to be real mutual interest, but I believe he has visited but not received an offer.

Do you think that defensive back is now low priority as far as depth is concerned, and the coaching staff will be content to wait and see what happens with these elite guys, or do you think they will start to get a little more active at corner/safety?

I think that safety is still a high priority for Michigan because they only have one safety committed. It looks as if Michigan is full at cornerback but you always want to keep recruiting elite players (Vernon Hargreaves, Kendall Fuller) for the chance to land them at the end. If a team is full at a particular position, you will always take an elite player, regardless.

  • I really think bower will be a part of this class and maybe even Muhammad. Although if Poggi commits then maybe not Muhammad and we take another Wr.

  • Is anyone else confused by the DB recruiting? I understand saving space for Fuller or Cravens but beyond that why are there still offers out? Lewis and Conley are two of the best corners around and Thomas is going to be a beast at safety. We have lots of depth in the defensive backfield.

I want to make it known that Steve Lorenz (Tremendous) is the reason my trial month became a permanent membership. Smart move 247.

I agree that I don't see us needing another safety outside of Dymonte because there seems to be a lot of depth there. Corner though, when you look at the roster when the 2013 kids get on campus, could probably use another one :

Safety - Thomas Gordon (RS Sr), Marvin Robinson (SR or RS JR), Josh Furman (RS JR), Tamani Carter (RS Soph), Jarrod Wilson (Soph or RS FR), Allen Gant (RS FR), Jeremy Clark (RS FR), Dymonte Thomas (FR) --- That's five kids with 3+ years of eligibility left.
Corner - Courtney Avery (SR), Terrence Talbott (SR), Blake Countess (JR), Raymon Taylor (JR), Delonte Hollowell (JR), Terry Richardson (RS FR), Gareon Conley (FR), Jourdan Lewis (FR)

In 2014, if Countess were to leave early for the NFL, that would leave 5 returning players at a spot that could see 4 guys on the field in dime packages. Any injuries or guys not panning out from those 5 would mean we'd be expecting true freshman to contribute again, which isn't something the coaches likely want to count on (even if kids like Peppers and Westphal like Michigan right now and seem like they'd be potential early contributors if we could get them).

  • I'm confused about DB and DL recruiting at this point. It seems likely that the coaches want to add a safety and a nose tackle, but I haven't got a clue who those would be.

    bkp1883

  • I find the DL recruiting the most interesting. We are in on a lot of elite players.

Seems like a matter of just not wanting to turn away elite players, regardless of position. If Michigan doesn't land it's top remaining DB targets, I could see the Wolverines deciding to move on and focus on other positions.

Thanks for reading! It's definitely nice to be in the position that Michigan is in, having the ability to be extremely picky and also focus extra attention on the remaining top targets.

I also like the position they r in- just would love for em to land a huge name in the play making / game changer category on the offensive side..

Honestly, I think they already have - Dawson, Bosch, Kugler, Tuley-Tillman and Fox, and throw in Morris as well. I know that's not what you meant, but having a dominant line will make any back/receiver/quarterback that much better. Love the approach Hoke has taken to building this team. It'd obviously be great to top it off with Isaac and/or Treadwell, but at the end of the day, I'd much rather surround an "A" offensive line with "B" skill position players than the other way around.
