MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

  • I like the move. It's a best-of-the-worst scenario since Notre Dame is out. Gives us a solid region, good academic school, and doesn't hurt the brand as much as people suggest it will. Also gives us a great opportunity to change up the divisions. I'd love to see this:

East(ish): Michigan, OSU, PSU, Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland
West(ish): MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, Minnesota

Protected rivalry for us with Michigan State, so we miss out on the Brown Jug game for a few years, but we've already done that.

The Big Ten tries to establish itself in the East Coast market by putting games with Michigan, OSU, and PSU which are 2 of the top current brands, and remains to be seen how PSU will emerge, but could be 3 of the top-4 brands in the league getting major East Coast exposure.

Who would people rather want? Pitt brings nothing, Syracuse is no better than Rutgers for the NYC market. Georgia Tech would never give us a foothold in SEC country. Who else is better?

  • Well, now that it is basically a done deal, I wish the Terrapins the best. Might as well get used to the idea.

As for who is better, I think Syracuse is better than Maryland. I think Georgia Tech, academically and athletically and also money wise, would be better than either. But whatever...looks like they can be considered when we go to 16 teams in 2014 biggrinbiggrin

  • Add UVA and VT and form the first 16 team super conference and call it a day.

  • This is a great move. Too many of you are looking at this from a sport/competitive standpoint. I'll agree that this does not do a lot fo strength of schedule. BUT the most important thing to long term sustainability is money. We just added two HUGE tv markets. HUGE. The Big 10 network is going to make bank on this deal and each school is going to benefit.

Hats off to Delany. This is a great move.

I like it, but I wonder it that fits their strategy.

It seems like every move is about expanding the footprint. The footprint would not be dramatically increased with UVA or VaTech...they already have the DC market. You pretty much add Richmond and Norfolk.

My guess is they go after a big market, either Atlanta with Georgia Tech, or St. Louis/Kansas city with Missouri (admittedly, very unlikely), or do a hail mary for Texas or Florida State or the like.

This, plus, this gives the B1G an in to really break into two big recruiting markets, the NJ market (with Don Bosco and Paramus) and the Maryland/DC/NoVa market (with Friendship, Gilman, and Good Counsel). It becomes a lot easier to promise these kids games in their home state/near their home state with two east coast schools in the conference.

    I like the move.

Has to be an AAU school, so the geographic options are limited to:

ACC: Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Pitt, Georgia Tech
SEC (Would never happen): Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, Florida, Missouri
    Big12: Texas, Kansas, Iowa State

I think it's easy to cross off the SEC schools, although who knows with Missouri since their academic side really wanted the Big Ten originally. No way we'd get Texas and Kansas/Iowa State bring nothing, so they are out. Bringing Duke and UNC wouldbe great for hoops, but not great for new TV markets to get two schools from the same state. And we could've had Pitt multiple times and they were passed over.

So the logical guess would be UVA and Georgia Tech would be the next targets, right?

+1 .. hadn't really thought of the recruiting specifics, but very true that both NJ and Maryland produce a lot of top-talent.

  • I hate that this is about money though. The tradition of the sport is dissipating year by year. What makes college football so fun is the rich tradition of so many teams with geographic rivalries. It now seems as if tbe only thing that matters is money. This IS about new Lear jets for the AD's and not about what is good for the sport. I realize that money is the driving force for everything, but its just sad to me. The big ten is irrevocably pushing college footballs tradition to irrelevance. With that out of the way, all I can do is get excited to have two new teams join the big ten. It's going to be fun and I'm just going to accept it And be happy.

    So welcome terps and Rutgers!

  • Thanks!

Sad to leave the ACC, but it's definitely time.

You guys just went D1 in lax right? We'll show you the ropes. We can also get a good soccer rivalry going.

  • Nothing strengthens a conference like adding a couple of irrelevant programs that are hemorrhaging cash and in a region that doesn't care about college football.

Assuming PSU tails off as one would expect from their sanctions, that's a joke of a division.

Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana as the other division. Yikes. That's Big East West.
