I like the move. It's a best-of-the-worst scenario since Notre Dame is out. Gives us a solid region, good academic school, and doesn't hurt the brand as much as people suggest it will. Also gives us a great opportunity to change up the divisions. I'd love to see this:
East(ish): Michigan, OSU, PSU, Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland
West(ish): MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, MinnesotaProtected rivalry for us with Michigan State, so we miss out on the Brown Jug game for a few years, but we've already done that.
The Big Ten tries to establish itself in the East Coast market by putting games with Michigan, OSU, and PSU which are 2 of the top current brands, and remains to be seen how PSU will emerge, but could be 3 of the top-4 brands in the league getting major East Coast exposure.
Who would people rather want? Pitt brings nothing, Syracuse is no better than Rutgers for the NYC market. Georgia Tech would never give us a foothold in SEC country. Who else is better?

This is a great move. Too many of you are looking at this from a sport/competitive standpoint. I'll agree that this does not do a lot fo strength of schedule. BUT the most important thing to long term sustainability is money. We just added two HUGE tv markets. HUGE. The Big 10 network is going to make bank on this deal and each school is going to benefit.
Hats off to Delany. This is a great move.

I like it, but I wonder it that fits their strategy.
It seems like every move is about expanding the footprint. The footprint would not be dramatically increased with UVA or VaTech...they already have the DC market. You pretty much add Richmond and Norfolk.
My guess is they go after a big market, either Atlanta with Georgia Tech, or St. Louis/Kansas city with Missouri (admittedly, very unlikely), or do a hail mary for Texas or Florida State or the like.

This, plus, this gives the B1G an in to really break into two big recruiting markets, the NJ market (with Don Bosco and Paramus) and the Maryland/DC/NoVa market (with Friendship, Gilman, and Good Counsel). It becomes a lot easier to promise these kids games in their home state/near their home state with two east coast schools in the conference.
I like the move.
