Awsome write-up Steve! Really love the detail. One thing I would love to see .... the top 2 or 3 things the recruit is looking for in a school. It would be interesting to understand 'what' the coaches need to sell to convince the recruit, and how that compares with other recruits.

Hmmm. Why I may be naive, are you saying they just 'show up' and figure out what is important to them? I would have to think some of them have ideas what they want, i.e.:
Recruit A wants (1) Top Pre-Med program, (2) early playing time, and (3) rapport with coaches.
Where ...
Recruit B wants (1) early playing time, (2) position coach that will get him to the NFL, and (3) co-commitment opportunity for him and friend.
I am just curious to see what they rank. I know it changes. But the coaches must ask as they have to craft a sales pitch. You cannot sell something unless you know what the customer wants (aka the recruit).

I think what is being said is kids will say one thing but truly believe another. You have to remember that in these interviews kids still have to sell themselves by saying the rightd thing so they will say what is proper to say if Steve posed this question. this forbes article may help you though. http://www.forbes.com/sites/aliciajessop/2012/12/14/the-surprising-factors-driving-college-football-recruits-decision/
But know, This article states that academics being the top factor. But on NSD, espn conducted an anonymous interview and the relationship with the coaches was top with academics not even in the top 3. So even still there is some fog to the real deal.To your sales pitch, the coaches get a feel what the kids true interest are. You saw that in the mcquay recruitment and likely the same with hand, focusing a lot on the academics.
