Maybe not this early, since there are plenty of spots to recruit linemen for. However, Hoke's policy is as much about sending out the message "Stick by Michigan and Michigan sticks by you", so I wouldn't be surprised if word got out.
I guess my question is, are the coaches allowed to tell the media that someone is no longer a commit? Would the coaches be allowed to tell another recruit? I'm very unclear about what the coaches are allowed to say and to whom.

Nope...I don't think so. They can't talk about any recruits, can they? But I presume he is not commit anymore.

I'm pretty foggy on that myself, but that sort of info gets out somehow.
Coaches, or anyone associated with the school, cannot go on record about a particular commit. However, they could still "leak" information about a particular recruit to the media. The coaches could certainly tell Steve that they no longer consider Ward a commit, and then Steve would report something like "I'm hearing that Michigan no longer considers Ward as a commit."

Ward and the coaches have already discussed this. They are giving him until the spring to figure things out.
I like Hoke's commitment policy but it doesn't really carry much weight until a position is full or near full it seems. We have 4-5 open OL slots for 2014 depending on how this years class finishes. Ward, Cole, Doles, etc... can take all the time they want deciding until the spots start to fill up, but once the spots start filling, the no visit policy has teeth.
