  • Well that took a while. Obviously committed too early. Hopefully he takes his time next time around.

  • Honestly, better to stop taking commits before senior season - with the exceptions of the S. Morris types. The verbal has barely dried and he is looking around. This is why I like the coaches angle of 'look around' BEFORE you decide to commit. Keep stressing it.

The problems is, other coaches play hard ball with recruits too. If we don't take commitments until a kid's senior year, there will be very few uncommitted prospects left. The ones that committed elsewhere will be pressured by the coach of the school they're committed to. Look at Bri'onte Dunn. Urbs flat out told him that if he didn't confirm his commitment he was yanking his scholarship offer. That will happen repeatedly if we wait until a kid is a senior and has most likely committed someplace else already.

  • I am fine with this, from both sides. Hoke took his commitment because he thought he was serious, now he is not, fine. This happens. It is so long until 2014 commitment day, I really can't worry about it in the least. And especially for a position like OL, where we are not so needy as to have to cry over Ward.

  • Not a shock if it happens. Look back in the thread before he committed and most of us said we wanted him to wait because it seemed like an impulse decision rather than one he'd stick with. LTT and Ferns are going to definitely have a talk with him before he decommits though, so we'll see what happens.

This strategy only makes sense if:

    1. The coaches continue purusing - hard, all available commits for the 'said' position.
    2. The coaches are up-front with the recruits they are pursuing by stating we need to protect ourselves.

Yup, not surprised by this one.

  • IMO, if a kid waffles this quickly over something so important, it makes me wonder how well he will stick to conditioning programs over the summer that coaches ask for. Another poster, I think Dizzo, has made a big deal lately about how much constant effort and desire to improve is in a player's development, and consistency of mind is a huge part of sticking with the program on a day-to-day basis.

This decommittal is a substantial red flag, IMO.

Give the guy a break. We are talking about a 16 or 17 year old kid here. Michigan was the first school in on him, but we knew that he was going to receive some serious interest from many other schools. For a young kid, when that happens, it starts changing your perspective; the world starts looking a little bigger. He committed way too early. Let him take his visits and enjoy the process. Get back to us later on.

  • Oline is the position I am least worried about moving forward. The next recruit will step forward and take his spot.

Agreed. But we are SOO early in the process, I would presume #1 is obvious. As for #2, I think that is the case also.

Like others, I kind of felt his commitment was rushed, so this is no surprise, and no skin off my nose. I say better to decommit now, take your visits, and decide in a couple months. Ultimately it doesn't mean anything.

Committing to the first school that comes calling is impulsive behavior that is as much of a red flag as decommitting when the second comes calling.

I would also be surprised if no other big time programs were showing interest before Michigan offered.

Yeah, he's still in his teens, but he will need to do most of the work necessary to make the starting lineup before he turns 20. Give me a kid who has a plan and sticks to it, like Ferns.

  • Better be careful Gerry, Steve, and Clint....the GBW sycophants are calling for your excommunication, draw-and-quartering, first child, or at least a wedgie which ever comes first. I think it funny people who are too afraid to say something here, I would there but I have already received several of the above punishments and am banned less being smarter than the owners and can still see the posts.

Personally, I don't see the correlation between being impulsive or, in this case, second guessing your original verbal commitment to a school and not being a hard worker. To me, this says absolutely nothing about the kids work ethic. Most grown adults are impulsive, let alone 16 year old kids. This is a huge decision in his life. I definitely don't judge him for wanting to make sure that he made the right decision. People second guess themselves all the time. Why can't a 16 year old kid do it?

Also, of course all of us would like to see every single one of these kids stick with their original verbal all the way through the process, but its just not a realistic expectation when considering human nature in general. People change their mind; it is what it is. Thus, in terms of Ferns, until he actually signs his name on signing day, I would be cautious about making statements like this; he might end up disappointing you too--who knows.

  • I am fine with this. We don't want him pulling a Conley on us and de-commit late in the recruiting process. UM was Conley and Wards only visit.

    Jer89

  • Let him visit whoever he wants. I am not the least bit worried about our oline.

Join the club. I've got banned twice in the last six months for very subtle opinions that apparently ruffled their feathers. That website is good for recruiting info but not worth all the headaches IMO. They have given me a read only ban for the last five weeks before my membership expires apparently because I said Michigan wouldn't and historically hasn't put up with the Leon McQuay senior types. I deleted it within thirty seconds because I know how they are over there but still got banned because he said his father read my trash. His father must have been sitting on the board and f5'ing my posts. I'll never go back as long as Beaver is over there.

  • He better think it through. We are probably taking 4 OL, and we are in on some good ones. He might not get back in if he opens things up.
