UM LB Core

  • I know Desmond Morgan is hurt and James Ross is starting for him this game, but I just can't help but feel that Ross is better than Morgan at this point. Honestly, I think our 4 best LB's are Ryan, Demens, Ross, and Bolden. What do you guys think? It might not be too long before Bolden takes over as a starter if we don't start stopping the run a little more consistently, he's just got a nose for the ball. When I'm watching these games it seems like the LB's except Ryan are a little hesitant in stepping up in the hole. Instead of them being 1 or 2 yd gains...they end up being 4 and 5 yard gains. I'd rather our defense get beat from being too aggressive than sitting back on our heels.

  • I think this will be like a Wally Pipp situation - the starter gets hurt and just never gets his position back from the young Lou Gehrig.

    Ross is just too good to keep off the field, and while Morgan is ok, the LBs we brought in last year are just better than Morgan (and possibly Demens too).

    Either way, I'm very excited about our LBs for the next few years.

    agreed, the 2012 haul was awesome and McCray and Gedeon both look good, are LB core is gona be nasty in the coming years

  • Hoke will play guys who are flying around over veterans, every day/all day, even if they fly in the wrong direction occasionally. Ross flies around. Bolden flies around. Demens does NOT fly around.

    Oh, and it's CORPS in this instance, not core.

  • What I'm hoping is that we are moving to having SMART defensive players! Watching the MSU game last night, I noticed that their linebackers and players like Adams and Dennard are very disciplined and their tackling is incredibly sound.

    -On a play in the 4th, ND ran a QB draw (they didn't run a QB draw the entire game to that point I don't believe). Their middle linebacker was patient and recognized the play immediately and hit the running lane quickly to minimize the gain.

    -There was another play where Riddick took a handoff, and Dennard came in from the secondary and laid a big hit on him with a TFL. I can't remember the last time I saw a Michigan DB lay a big hit on a running back the way Dennard did.

    Gotta admit, Dantonio and his boys coach them up and what they may lack in pure skill or measurables they make up for in football IQ. Similar to what OSU has always had: very smart, disciplined defenders (only they had the pure skill).

    I'm liking what I see from a guy like Frank Clark: the way he jumps to disrupt a pass when he rushes a quarterback that he won't get to cannot be underestimated. That is football IQ. Way too many guys will have a B-line to the QB but won't get there in time, and they don't even make the effort to try and bat the pass down.

    Kenny Demens kind seems like one of those guys. He seems to be steps behind which I attribute to poor instincts and low football IQ. Hopefully the guys Hoke has been bringing in can be more Frank Clarkish.

    part of the problem with the upperclassmen is they got very poor coaching under the Rich Rod regime, our players now are getting much better coaching and we are recruiting better defensive talent. Many of the players we are getting now are praised for their instincts and football iq, Joe Bolden and James Ross are a couple that are already showing those instincts and a nose for the ball. I expect within a couple years are defense will play much faster and more disciplined.
