Ty Isaac

Yeah, before he had said he wants to visit OSU and PSU for spring practices. Though it's hard to trust anything some of these kids say. If the feeling is right, they'll commit. I know he's high on UM, but I didn't realize he was ready to pop that quickly.

If the UM staff likes Isaac that much more than Smith, then they could wait another week or two. I know Hoke's itching to finish by May, but time isn't quite that important.

Has he shown very much interest in PSU? You think you guys could beat out Ohio for Smith if Michigan gets Isaac and is full? I've considered that as a bonus in landing Smith, we keep him from Ohio.

Well he has visited us and specifically named us and OSU as places he wanted to visit after UM.

However, we're third in the race behind UM and OSU. I do think we have a distinct chance to get Smith if both UM and OSU turn him away. OSU is after some other RB's too, and I don't think they have many slots.

Basically, there's only a limited # of slots between UM, OSU, and PSU, and we're all in contention for several RB's (along with other schools).

    Ty Isaac: UM, maybe OSU
DeVeon Smith: UM, OSU, and maybe PSU
    David Williams: PSU and OSU
    Derrick Green: OSU, maybe PSU

In the end, PSU should end up with a good RB no matter what. But I'd prefer Isaac goes to UM so Smith can remain on our radar.

    More importantly can we?goblue

What's wrong with a man giving away a golden shower? Sounds like a nice gift to me.

It's possible, though general consensus is that we're currently a bit behind OSU and/or Pitt. He is visiting for our spring game, so there's hope on that front. Foster is a tough cat to read - he's extremely quiet.

Believe I heard he was in the early early stages of recruiting.

  • According to Sam Webb, he's "comfortably" saying, they will take Deveon Smith if he want's in this weekend.

Good...we shouldn't be held hostage on the whim of a kid who wants to go see the left coast and risk the opportunity of playing for Michigan. Prefer a kid who truly wants to be here and doesn't need to look around.

Albeit I'd be more than happy with Isaacs commitment as well

  • Warren Ball and Brionte Dunn had no problems going together in the same recruiting class at the same position. No reason these two can't do the same...

I think that is being a bit unfair to Isaac- this isn't Jordan Diamond deciding after signing day. It is the middle of March!

Very true, but putting all our eggs in no basket isn't a good idea. Especially at a position we need to get a dynamic player at.

I was about to say the same thing. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a kid from Illinois wanting to make certain that they've chosen the right place. People need to put their fandom aside sometimes.

Do I want Ty Isaac to drop for the Wolverines? Of course. Do I also understand someone not wanting to jump the gun and risk a decommit later? I sure do, especially considering their policy after committing is "no more visits."

You're essentially saying - in MARCH - "hey, you can't spend your own money and check out another campus else you'll risk losing your spot." So no, I cannot blame any recruit for saying okay, let me get these visits out of the way prior pledging to join.

You are 100% right. Yet the situation we have is another RB ,on par with Isaac for the most part, ready to commit. Do you say 'NO' to this RB or slow play him in the hopes that Isaac decides to come to Michigan? I for one am very nervous when a recruit wants to go see USC. Between Kiffin-Sr, Ed Ogeron , nice weather and a USC campus with all the amenities...Tough for any kid to say no to that. Those are some of the BEST recruiters in the country. If anything they will probably get Isaac to come back for an official during a game atmosphere setting. Then where are we? We sit around and wait for Isaac. We've probably already lost Smith by that point. Then what? Hoke and Co. are the ones pushing to get this class filled in MARCH. So no I don't blame Isaac. He is caught in Hoke-a-mania and his decision to stall his recruitment could cost us 2 very good RB's

  • Take Smith if he wants to commit this weekend, without a doubt. Keep recruiting Isaac. USC is going to take more than one RB, so they won't have an advantage there.

I wasn't implying that they wait on Isaac - and I'd be shocked if they weren't up front with him about their offers and timelines. My only point was that fans shouldn't be upset about a recruit wanting to make certain that he's making the right choice for both him and his family. I know if that was MY son I'd want him to be certain as once he gives his pledge, I'd want him to honor it.

Of course you don't ask Smith to wait, given that they'd be happy to take either one.

On the other hand, I sincerely doubt they're trying to "get the class filled in March." It just so happens that they had some kids who knew where they wanted to go/they got a head start on identifying and recruiting them (for example, LTT had visited 7 times already). If they were pushing to fill the class by March, they wouldn't have told Levenberry that he has a scholarship available, whenever. Yet having knocked out some of their major needs, they can now leisurely target those high on their boards and recruit with a scoped rifle as opposed to a shotgun.

  • A few months ago, everyone was certain the coaches wanted to take two RB outside of Shallman. The only reason that changed is because Ty supposedly said he wanted to be the only RB in the class.

As he looks around, I think he is going to find virtually every program he is considering will take another RB. So we take Smith, and hope Isaac continues to look at us. That is the only logical strategy going forward.

I know nothing about Isaac other than what I read on 247. However, I am not a big fan of the kid dictating that he is only coming if he is the single recruit in the class at his position. Look at the mess Georgia is in at RB. IF Isaac said this it makes me think he is afraid of competition.

I think the other thought here is that Smith is a very good back. It's hard to land to top-tier RBs, which I consider both Isaac and Smith to be. Ball and Dunn were a rare case of two top kids in the same state growing up big fans of the school. Our coaches have consistently said since they got here that they would like to get to the point of one RB getting 20 carries a game.

It's tough to pitch to kids with offers from USC, Oklahoma, ND, OSU, etc, that either one of them loses the competition and doesn't get many carries, or they both get 10-15 carries per game, when they are both being pitched they'll be the featured back at other top places. I think if it was Smith or Isaac + Berkley Edwards this wouldn't be a discussion because they'd be saying the 2nd back will get a shot, but will also be looked at in the slot and on special teams.

  • I love Smith. I have seen him play, and think he could be a great back. I just don't think the Coaches can just blindly wait. They learned their lesson last year, when they waited on a couple big time OL, got burned at the last minute, and fell short of the 5 OL they wanted.

I think they do want one main back...but that doesn't mean they shouldn't recruit more than one. Many recruits don't work out. You take a stable of backs, and hope one of them works out. I am not sure Isaac ever made an ultimatum of one back only...but if he did, that does scare me a little. Like SDWolverine said above, that makes you think he is scared of competition, which is never a good thing.

What will Smith look for at UM?

  • I don't think we need to slow play anyone we shouldn't have to wait for a kid that is unsure if he is true blue when we have a kid that knows for sure that he want's to come to Michigan. Why should we gamble when we have a chance at losing both some where down the line. I say we take Smith if he wants to be a Wolverine and some where down the line Ty wants to commit then we take him as well. He shouldn't be afraid of the compition at his position if he is confident in himself. I feel that a kid that is telling a school he wants to be the only back and we tell him he is good to go then he decides to visit another school that there is not fair to us. So i think we need to explore our options.
