Morris is behind Kevin Olsen, whaaa-?

Also, sorta bummed to see Kamani Thomas omitted from the rankings. It's a pretty good list.

  • three thoughts

    1) Shane is a 5* and is better than Olsen
    2) Jalin Marshall is overrated
    3) Steve Elmer is a 5*

Any ideas as to why he was omitted?

  • 'That other site' has Shane Morris as 5*, #1 in the country overall for 2013.

I think Shane is a 5* and at least a Top-10 in the country overall.

Let's not overreact. He's sitting at #12 if he stays there he'll be a 5*. I expect him to move up though.

I don't think that is correct about being #1 overall over there.... they are not ranked yet, just have star ratings.

You're correct. Also the two Georgia 5* are pretty much locks for top two in the nation.

I remember people going crazy on their message boards about him being rated #1. Maybe it wasn't a formally announced #1 rating, but there was some kind of press release over there about Shane being rated #1.

I love his attitude though from his tweet about becoming #1 on here.

Im glad he knows he will be #1 QB and will put in the work to do it. We all know he should be #1 QB. But maybe finding these little things will help motivate him even more.

  • Kevin Olsen is an excellent QB prospect. (His HS tape is very impressive imho.)

I don't know if he deserves to be ranked above Morris or, more importantly, if he is actually better than Morris.

I'm interested to see this play out though...

ETA: Morris has been a known quantity for some time and is more familiar to Michigan fans since he is an in-state prospect that has garnered a lot of praise. Moreover, we've been told that he's the best QB in the nation over and over for so long that this praise has taken a life of its own. I feel that Michigan fans become defensive whenever someone suggests that there is another QB prospect in the 2013 class that is potentially better than Morris. I want to remind everyone that QBs improve and regress. For all we know, Olsen is actually better than Morris. Or vice versa.

However, I don't think there is anything that definitively justifies either as being (considerably) better than the other right now.

Morris really impressed people during the summer workouts, so if he has another showing like that during this offseason, I think he'll wrap up the #1 QB ranking.

It's already pretty known that he'll be a consensus 5 star, as he's already one to some sites and is right on the border for the other sites.

    Sure.

But none of that guarantees that he's actually the best QB in the nation or that he will be the best QB in the college or in the NFL.

It just means that he will likely be ranked higher than Olsen on most sites.

Case-in-point: Compare Jimmy Clausen's HS ranking + college performance against Cam Newton's HS ranking + college performance.

Another one: Barkley (of USC) vs. Luck (of Stanford)

I guess I don't really get what you're arguing, then. There's obviously no way we can tell right now who is going to be the better QB four years from now, there's way too many confounding variables in play. The team, their teammates, coaches, play style, opponents, training staff, campus, college, etc.

Now you're just kind of arguing against recruiting rankings in general. The only thing he can control is working hard and being the best QB he can be, which he does better than any high schooler I've seen in a while. He's relentless in his work ethic and always thinks he can get better.

Obviously no one knows who the best QB is going to be, but I think right now, we can say that Shane is the best QB in the country. That has no bearing on where he'll be as a college or NFL player.

And just a note, Cam Newton was a 5 star, as was Clausen. Both had good college careers. Andrew Luck was a high 4 star and Barkley was a 5. Sounds pretty right to me except Luck should be a 5.

  • No.

    I'll simplify my two points:

    1. We don't know who is better. Hence, Michigan fans shouldn't keep repeating the "Morris is better than Olsen" line. It's disingenuous.

    2. I don't want Michigan fans to get caught up in where Morris ranked (relatively-speaking). In other words, I don't want us obsessing over whether Olsen or Morris is ranked the #1 QB. Ultimately, it's just a guesstimate.

I'll be content so long as Morris is legitimately a 5 star and, more importantly, plays like it.

Why can't we say that Morris is better than Olsen? I know I'm not a scout or anything, but by looking at film and watching them over the summer and seeing stats, I honestly think Morris is better. What's wrong with that?

And we don't get caught up in the rankings - we just have to make sure we don't create unattainable expectations for him. The good thing is he seems like he has enough self-motivation so that he won't get caught up in what other people hype him up as. He'll still work hard and be the best QB possible no matter what we say.

  • I am humble that we have him on our sidelines and hope Shane will be too. I hope that he can control all the hype and not let it get to his head. Lets hope he can just prove his game in the BIG house.

  • @Ducksworth:

I guess I should've been clearer. (The search for clarity is a life-long one...)

I have no problem in someone watching Shane's tape and Kevin's tape and thinking that Shane seems more impressive now and/or projects to be better in the future.

But I've spoken to some Michigan fans who have no idea that Kevin Olsen even existed and brazenly believed that Morris is better simply because recruiting experts have repeatedly said that Morris is the best QB in the land. Seriously.

I find *that* annoying. That's exemplifies blind homerism and frankly it's disappointing.

But I do wholeheartedly agree with your second point. I want Morris to continue to grow/improve/develop/refine his game. And if he strives to be the best that he can be (expectations be damned!), then that's enough for me.

  • Is Shane planning on going to all those camps and combines again this summer?

I hope not. What purpose would they serve, at this point?

  • Gentlemen, it was obviously a close decision for our analysts regarding Morris and Olsen and who the top QB is in the country. Our network obviously loves them both, with Olsen checking in at No. 7 overall and Morris at No. 12. Also, there is currently just eight five stars listed. That group will grow to roughly 30. Where Morris and Steven Elmer are currently ranked, they easily make that cut.
