He's their starting FB it looks like, so I don't think he's hurt.

Wonder if this hurts that Rennisance coach's heart? He seemed very concerned about that hurting heart of his during LT's recrutiment to UM. Not that it really matters cause he got fired...

  • Sounds like he ate himself out of a position. He's pushing 300 after coming in as a 230 pound LB.

    Yikes, that stinks.

  • As far as I can tell, he's playing FB until the depth at DE/DT thins out a little bit. Too much talent and strength to have him sit on the bench, FB is a good holding pen for him.

  • Wasn't he recruited the play the same position LaMarr Woodley played?

IIRC, Woodley was a DE/LB hybrid. At least, that's the position he plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I've read this explanation from other Spartan posters as well and it makes no sense at all. If he has such a talented future at DE/DT he would be playing there right now learning the position and perfecting his craft. Why would the coaches consciously stunt his growth at a position he will be counted on to make a major contribution next season (assuming Gholston goes pro). The answer is they wouldn't. He's a FB.

I don't have an in-depth knowledge of how football coaching works, but I doubt that it takes THAT much specialized focus, particularly in practice, to play fullback. Block some guys 14-20 times a game and maybe catch a pass. Again, I know nothing about advanced football, but I bet that he's still getting coached to play DT/DE but he's just playing FB in games. From what I understand, the talented DE/LB killing time at FB thing is semi common, anyway.

The simple answer to that IMO is he getting any PT at all on the DLine? Even during garbage time. If so then what you are saying is probably correct.

If I remember correctly, he was 'publicly' recruited to play the MIKE. By 'publicly' I mean he was told he would have the opportunity to play there, even though everyone except LT himself seemed to realize he was too big to play full-time LB. Kind of like Gholston, and the 'I liked MSU because they'll give me a shot to play LB' train of thought. Woodley and Graham were very similar in that they were those really huge athletic high school LBs that everyone new would become DE's in the end. Woodley did play 'OLB (the 'Rush LB') his sophomore and junior year when we played around with the 3-4, but he was esentially a DE the whole way through.

However, I don't think anybody so him gaining so much weight he's basically a DT at this point.

  • Thomas was 250 pounds as a high school senior. Stevie Wonder could've seen that he wasn't going to be a linebacker in college. That was the bill of goods MSU sold him on though; Rodriguez and Robinson, as awful as they were, were actually honest with the kid and told him he would be on the DL in college. Same with Gholston, who "voluntarily" moved to DE once he arrived at MSU. Lol.

Gholston's really developing well on that MSU DL, too. Never seen a B10 player so hyped up for no reason whatsoever.

Some unlucky NFL team will likely draft Gholston as a 1st round pick.

I won't mind one bit if he turns out to be a bust like Vernon Gholston.

Clearly they were referring to coaching up his weight.
