Thoughts on the Michigan V Alabama game???????

  • 92DT said...

Bama fan here - I think Michigan is extremely well-coached and will play extremely hard, and I think they're the Big 10 champs at the end of the year.

But there's a huge mismatch up front on both sides of the ball, in terms of size, strength and athletic ability. We're well-coached too, with more team speed than anyone in college football (with exception of maybe LSU) and we're more physical than anyone you'll see all year.

However, I do think Michigan will keep it relatively close - something like 24-13. We respect Dennard, but in our league Dennard would be a RB. We tackle kids like him all the time.

It'll be awesome, though - the spectacle of two of college football's most storied traditions hookin' it up - in Texas no less. Gotta piss off all those Longhorns and Aggies and Horny Toads, right?

    See y'all in Dallas!

Why would Denard be a running back? I don't see a whole lot of top quality QBs in the SEC.

Really.....meant this to be a serious conversation.

    Alabama runs a 3-4 & Michigan a 4-3.

Hard to compare position to position on the D.......but take a look at the depth charts of both teams..........Alabama is a lot bigger, front three to your front four , LB's bigger on average and CB &S taller and heavier............and one intangible......several 4.4 & 4.3 guys back there......speed.

my point is that we aren't running the same offensive systems.

Michigan isn't going to line up in the I and run right at you. We'll be in the shotgun 80% of the time and we'll be running zone reads and outside runs for designed runs for the most part.

Our passing game isn't going to be a traditional drop back passing game where the O-lineman are going to have to block while our quarterback makes a 5 step or 7 step drop and goes through 3 or 4 reads. Denard will have 2 (maybe 3) reads on any given pass play and the ball will be gone.

I'm not saying Bama doesn't have an advantage in the trenches (and all over the field), I'm just saying you can't say "oh our o-lineman are way bigger than yours, therefore they will do a better job at what they're doing."

And if you want to talk about "intangible" speed, I'm pretty sure Michigan will have the fastest player on the field touching the ball on every offensive snap.

Because he's not really a QB. He's an athlete recruited by RichRod to play in a run-first, spread attack. You won't get the option off against Saban. Ask Cam, ask Tebow. He'll have to be able to stick some throws. Cam & Tebow could. Tremendous respect for D-Robthe athlete - we'd love to have him. But he'd be a RB/WR down here.

The other thing is you have to be able to get off the field defensively against us. This limits 16's effectiveness. If you see some 10- or 12-play drives against us, you better be very very deep on D. LSU was as talented as us defensively last year and almost as deep, but they broke in the 4Q.

Don't get me wrong, though - I'm not your typical Bama homer. I think this game will be closer than most down here think. I love Hoke. I hope he doesn't back down from Meyer and those gimps at Ohio State. But on this game ... I've been following Bama football for almost 30 years. I've never seen us this loaded from top to bottom or this well-coached. I think we're at different level - for now. These things change & run in cycles though.

2, maybe 3 reads and then the ball is gone. He better be accurate, bc we can cover for 2-3 seconds.

Well Drob has thrown for over 2000 yards in both years he has started. He can stick some throws. He completed over 62% of his passes his sophmore year. Drob is a QB. He is better than at least half the QBs playing in the SEC.

Alabama has the mismatches all over the field offensive and defensively. The SEC is still a superior conference and Michigan will be a great team but I think this early in the season and Alabama's speed infested roster will dominate the game. You can not fault the wolverines though for having the balls to play a top tier gamelike this early in the season. Brady Hoke is leading this team to a NC contender year in and year out. Move over OSU because it is Michigans time to rule the big ten.

We'll tackle guys everyday in practice that are as fast or within a step. We "get" speed. Frankly, if he holds up for 60 mins it'll be bc he's handing the ball off or getting it off. If he has 15+ carries, he probably won't finish the game.

It's gonna be a great season for you guys &, I think, a good game. Just hope both teams come out healthy.

From the Michigan recruiting web site.....4.5 40......where is all the speed the above fans were talking about.......Alabama has over 15 players on the team at 4.5 or faster........all of our four starting RB's are 4.4......our D sees speed every day. 4.5 is not fast in the SEC....4.3 or 4.28 is, not 4.5.

Alright, well I guess there's no point in playing the game then lol. You guys seem to have all contingencies figured out!

You're throwing out 40 times like it's a race and player weights like they're going to be doing a tug-o-war.

I respect Bama and feel like we'll need an almost perfect game to beat them, but 40 times and player weights are far from the factor that should be discussed as the reason why Alabama is going to win (as it is here). This isn't NCAA Football 12 where a team full of 95+ speed guys is unbeatable.

Why do I think Michigan has a chance to win? Because for as much as Alabama's defense scares me, there offense doesn't frighten me. They possess the ball, look to not make mistakes, and lean on the defense to win. It's not as if, on top of a great defense, they trot out an explosive an unstoppable offense. I'm not worried about coming out and having to play from behind all game, because none of Alabama's games last season were out of reach at the half.

Bama obviously has a phenomenal defense. However, it's also not as if Bama played a gauntlet of prolific offensive teams. Michigan returns two 1000 rushers (one of which touches the ball every single play and also threw for 2000 yards last season). For some perspective, Alabama faced 4 1000 rushers all last season. You're not going to be able to lineup and key on a guy like Micheal Dyer (in the case of Auburn) as the extent of Michigan's running game. Every play, their defense is going to have to account for Denard plus Fitz Toussaint or whoever else is in the backfield.

As far as passing game, Alabama faced 2 quarterbacks who could be considered mobile. Jordan Jefferson and Chris Relf (who were both awful last season). Say what you want about him being a running back in the SEC...that's the factor that makes him hard to defend. You're not going to be able to play traditional pass defense against Denard because of his running ability. It's no secret that Denard doesn't have the best passing arm, but it's his running ability that masks the limitations in his passing. Much like McCarron, Denard isn't called on to win the game with his arm very often (thank god). We just don't want him to lose the game with his arm.

I expect the game to be close going into the 4th quarter, simply because I don't think Alabama's offense is going to come out and put up a ton of points. If Michigan can get one or 2 big plays in the game, I like our chances.

That is why I feel like Michigan will have more than a solid chance to win the game...not because of 40 times and player weights.

Correct me if i am wrong michigan fans but last year i think D-Rob was clocked in the high 4.3's. He is faster than 4.5 and has great breakaway speed. If he is in stride past 7 or 8 yards good luck.

Somewhere in the 4.3's.........from a 4.5 on your own site...........excuse me but that site "somewhere I read" does not fly as a bonafide, even by a Michigan fan on a Michilgan site............but dream on....................4.3's if you please....just watch our 4.4's run him down if he gets that far downfield.

4.33 at Friday Night Lights. 4.39 at the UA/Scout Combine.

However, SEC fans would have you believe that a 4.33 or a 4.39 is slower once you go to school in the north.

btw...a Michigan fan and an osu fan teaming up in a discussion. 2012 really must be the end of the world lol

You can't be serious, Denard may have some limitations as a QB but speed is definitely not one of them. SMH that we are even discussing his speed as a 4.5.

I love it too. I understand that Bama's D is fast but people need to keep in the realm of reality, Denard is a burner, if it was a foot race, chances are he'd outrun everyone on that D but football isn't a foot race. I never would have thought that I would have a discussion on Denard's "4.5" speed... lol
