The importance of a playmaker at wide reciever.

  • Am I the only one who thinks that we absolutely need to recruit a top receiver for 2013. IMO we HAVE to get someone like Treadwell. We have not had an elite receiver since Manningham. Hemingway was solid, but not even close to the caliber of Manningham, or Edwards. I'm going to be quite disappointed if we don't get at least one 4 star receiver for the 2013 class, and I have a gut feeling that we might not.

I love this class so far, just think we need some top receiver talent for Shane Morris to throw to.

We have Darboh who is a 4 star from last year. Chesson is a high 3 star. Dukes is a 4 star on some sites. Add them to Butt, Funchess and a Norfleet and i think we will be fine.

Yep, you are the only one who thinks we need WR. We already are recruiting top WR, we need them to commit, however they are all taking time with their decision. We already have a 4* WR in this class. Gut feeling based on what?

It pains me to say it but part of the problem (and I hope this changes this year) isn't a lack of talent at the WR position, but the fact that a lot of the time Denard doesn't always make the throw. Hopefully Morris changes that.

Read the OP in this thread. Check out all the great WR talent that Michigan is recruiting right now. Those are the guys they're after. You think the coaches are going to strike out on all of them?

Meh, it's a combination of several factors, QB play, WR play, youth/inexperience, size, top-end talent/speed, new offense (as it pertains to last year), etc.

Yeah, part of it was the way that the offense changed last year. Also, Michigan has players at WR (Gallon comes to mind), the only problem is that too many of them are undersized.

  • you guys will get treadwell. we bucks want him but dont have a shot despite him being somewhat high on us. he is all michigan

Exactly. Gallon is very talented and has a good skill set, but putting a 5'8 at outside WR on a consistent basis comes with limitations.

  • Im not sure about OP..Seems suspect..I will say it would be a cherry on top to get a WR who can stretch the defense..a good size speed WR...Dukes may not have blazing speed but i think he has good speed and his height and size is great for stretching the field..And i would be surprised if UM didnt land at least 1 more good solid WR who can do the same.

  • It is wayyyy too early to get nervous about this.
For all the slack Denard took for those jump balls to Hemingway though, I think some of it was a bit overboard. For lacking the talent that Braylon had, he sure got the rep of being a playmaker because Denard threw the ball where the best playmaking wide receiver could make a play on it. We won games because he took the chance to put it up there and let his best receiver make a play. I know this is comparing apples to oranges in a way because Henne was a true freshman and Denard was a Junior but how many balls did Henne throw to Braylon that really should have been intercepted if not for Braylon literally ripping the ball away from the defender?
A bigtime WR can go a long way and it can help a QBs confidence and why not let your WR try to make a play on the ball.

That being said, I still hope we see Denard make some strides in being more accurate especially on the long ball and I am not worried at all about our WR recruiting.

Edit: It may even be possible that Braylon does not win the Biletnikoff award if not for some of those throws where Braylon makes the spectacular grabs that should have been intercepted.

  • I think in some regards it will play a role to see if Robinson makes some strides this year with regards to connecting on his throws. If he can get up to 65%+ completion rate I think that will help significantly in providing some excitement at the position. While everyone may know that Morris is highly rated, you are also asking HS kids to envision a new offense that has not happened yet. Also, it will help if Morris' HS lets him air it out more this year to develop some additional hype.

This is probably just going to be a situation where people will have to be patient on this position group to make decisions, especially considering that many want to visit and may not have the funds to make trips to each school they are interested in without the official visit funding.

I am sure that they will find another 1-2 high quality players out of the group that is being pursued.
