The freshmen are as good as advertised

He looks pretty big already. Funchess is smooth as a receiver. Runs good routes already and has nice hands. He should get plenty of playing time this year.

Absolutely, outstanding receiver, might already be our best and expect to see alot of him this season. Just meant he'll probably need a little more bulk to be a real effective blocker which would make him more of an every down type of TE. Either way we got a great player in Funchess, extremely pleased with what I've seen from him.

yes and no imo, it is disturbing for this year that so many true freshman seem to be our best players but it does certainly make the future look bright and getting these young guys some playing time now could pay off big time the next couple years.

Oh yeah I am definetly excited about the future. I think Pipkins, Ross, Bolden and Mario O are going to be really good. That's based on what I have seen so far this year. I think we could end up being really really really young on D next year.

Oh absolutely. Borges needs to make sure he gameplans to take advantage of the mismatches Funchess will cause.

I'm kind of wondering why we haven't seen Justice Hayes at all.

It does seem pretty surprising after how high the coaches were on him through the spring. I know we have a stable the coaches are using but expected to see him get some touches here and there as a back or in the slot.

that is lookin very likely but thats where workin these guys in some this year is gona help us out a bit. I can't wait to see what that Defense is gona look like in the 2014/2015 seasons, should be pretty epic.

yea didn't quite understand why we weren't airing the ball out a little more today. Our bigger receivers Funchess, Gardner and Jackson seemed to all present some pretty good mismatches against the af secondary.

lol I was getting really frustrated early in the game. Borges seems to either run Denard over and over again or not run him at all. Man i want to see a better mixture of runs and passes.

I really wish Gardner would get a redshirt year. Would love to have Gardner for 2 more years at WR along with Funchess at TE.

absolutely and when we see favorable matchups Borges needs to exploit them.

Dont expect to see Hayes all year outside of garbage time. Coaches have said many times they dont want to share Carries. Maybe next year if he can take over for Smith.

I don't know. With Countess being out we might see Richardson some on defense when we play some teams that throw the ball more.

Yeah RJS probly shouldnt play but i remember when the B1G came to watch our practice they said Richardson is a great cover corner

  • I don't know if I want Funchess to bulk up too much because his biggest asset is his speed as a TE. Maybe a little would do him good but don't lose sight of why he is a mismatch.

  • I would like to see Justice Hayes as a third down back instead of Vincent Smith once in a while. Norfleet too.

Funchness looks the part...he could be a star. Would like to see 2 TE spots, maybe with AJ Williams? Gardner looks like a 1st round pick at WR at times, he needs to be coached though. The WR corps looks ok. The Freshman WR didn't play, did they?

On defense, LB looks like it will be ok, but the DL...too bad Wormley is hurt, I think he would have played. Pipkins may be a starter by the end of the year at this rate.

  • Gardner and Funchess are nightmares to cover. I think this was Funchess' awakening and he will prolly end up getting a lot more playing time now. He's just too good to keep on the sideline. Too much of a threat and a great safety blanket for Denard.

I heard Justice Hayes can't protect the ball in practice. Fumbles far too often. That explains why we haven't seen him yet.

Funchess looked alot bigger to me yesterday then seeing him in interviews and highlights last year in high school......Hes in the right range IMO, and will continue to tone up/put on muscle

  • Also, you put out a set with Funchess, Gardner, Gallon, Northfleet, Rountree 5 wide to spread the field, that should be able to expose any defense with mismatches galore

  • Funchess will shatter the career TE receiving yards record. I think it's around 1,400 yards. He will probably double it if we use him properly. I was so frustrated when he was on the sideline for long stretches when it seemed AF couldn't cover him.

I am really disappointed with Thomas Gordon this season. He has not played well in my opinion. I am all for Wilson getting more time playing the center field safety spot and letting Kovacs move up more toward the line of scrimmage in run support or even to blitz. It's kind of a scary thought though having 2 starting true freshman LBs and a true freshman starting safety. Not to mention i think Pipkins might of been our best DT this game. Disturbing thoughts.

It's not really disturbing if they are good. That's Sparty thinking that a freshmen can never be good.

  • Didn't Saban start a bunch of freshmen in his 2nd year when Bama went 12-2?

Yeah, and when it was their time to go (last year), looked how dominant and experienced the defense was.
