I have to say that I am a bit shocked by that offer and subsequent commitment, maybe because I am greedy. In reality though, it may not be such a bad thing. Sure, we won't have room for a more highly rated prospect, but this kid is ranked high for his position, and Hoke and Co. are doing a great job at filling the gaps. The only real need I thought we had left was WR, but never considered a long snapper because you don't notice them until they screw up, but they are a very important part of the special teams facet. Would I have liked to see the shollie go to a 4 or 5* kid? Sure, but the staff must think that this is a position of need worthy of spending a scholarship, and with the results they have shown so far, I certainly am not going to question them. So welcome Scott!!!

  • Are there rankings for long snappers?

Look, this kid is now a Michigan man, so I am very accepting. But...you know.

Not on these sites, Rubio Long Snapping is basically the only source of info on long snappers, and he's very highly praised there fwiw.

Staff must not be confident they are going to land a 4 or 5 star kid too fill out all of those available slots. Outside of Treadwell and that recruitment is far from over we don't lead for anyone. Were in the running on alot of kids but you know how that goes you win some and you lose some.

It's too early for them to be cutting their losses. I think there's an extra spot somewhere that we don't know about yet. These coaches are smart recruiters, I'm going to wait to see how things shake out.

Never said they are cutting their losses... im just saying the chances that all 4 of the last 4 commits in this class are going to be 4 and 5 star guys was not high. As I said yesterday... Treadwell, Bailey, and McQuay would be a an excellent and realistic close to this recruiting class. Easier said then done obviously, but that would be my ideal finish.

This is surprising because you would think that the coaches could have offered late and still render a commitment, but they know more than we do obviously.

The reason for offering now has some meaning, and we can speculate all we want, but we'll never truly know why. I'm trusting the coaches on this one.

  • Oh, and since we are at 21, its time to redo things.

Assuming the magic number is still 24, its down to 3. Pick your remaining 3 commits, once again, not who you want, who will actually commit. I'm sticking with my original 1st 3, Bailey, Treadwell, and McQuay.

It gets interesting from here, 3 spots and the same number of highly touted players out there...

I thought the exact same thing as soon as I heard this. I trust the coaches and if they think we need a scholarship LS in the 2013 class they have more than earned the benefit of the doubt. But I have also just adjusted my assumption of class size from 24 to 25.

  • Some doofus on FB claiming that a member or 2 of the 2012 class may not make the academic cut. pipkins not one of them, thus opening up more spots

I would be surprised to see any of them not get in, but you never know. How are Norfleet's grades? Does anyone have an article that said he reported his GPA? Also haven't heard much about Jeremy Clark, not sure if he had academic issues.

Have to get to 24 somehow. People love counting the recruits but forget somebody has to leave to open up those spots.

We would have to have 24 spots open by the fall of '13. There are 20 shollies available at this time, and attrition will get you there. How many seniors will not be offered a 5th year? I bet the coaches already know this, barring some unforeseen turnaround. One or two kids might transfer because they are buried on the depth chart, home sick, whatever. Having 4 spots open up by the time this class arrives is probably more likely than not.

  • I am doubtful we get to 25 spots. So 24 it is.

I think the coaches clearly decided that they only want 1 WR. That is first. Second, they want a CB...that is quite clear. So that is two spots.

The third spot is probably best available willing to commit. Either a DL or RB. My guess is they are not confident on RB...so likely a DL.

So I stick with Treadwell, McQuay, and Mathis.

Those final three, especially with the addition of our Whiskey Sippin' long snapper, makes this an unbelievable class, better than my wildest dreams a couple years ago.

And those three are probably the most likely at this point.

With three spots left...I find it hard to believe they would take a 4th WR, unless there was no other option.

I agree there. These coaches are already depending on attrition above and beyond 5th year seniors and have four receiver commits that haven't even reached campus.

I think its a DB, a DL, and one receiver, presumably Treadwell. As crazy as it sounds, I'm not sure they would take Bailey's commitment on his visit with the staff having what seems to be higher targets. Too bad he isn't a QB, WR, and a LS.

I'm not so sure about this. They just offered Darren Carrington. I believe we are looking at him at WR. Unless the staff doesn't feel that good about Quon, I don't see why they would offer more WRs with Paul Harris and Bailey both visiting still.
