The Gap is Closed - MSU and UM are on an equal level in BB.

If it makes you feel better to think so then fine. We shall see.

Offer me a well-reasoned fact to think otherwise. I am open to listen.

Reputation means nothing. What happens on the field is what is important. I'm a Spartan and I agree that UM has a great football reputation. That does not mean the program on the field at this point in time lives up to that reputation. IMO all talk about history is just to make people feel good about their sports programs when there is nothing else to talk about.

    I'm sorry, but LOL WUT?'

    You just said....
All that matters is what happens on the court and currently UCLA isn't remotely in the same class as MSU. Indiana got back to this level this year. Ask anyone who really knows the game and MSU's reputation is as one of the very best, just below UNC and Duke.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

Currently yes. I agree and have not said otherwise. You are the one postulating on the future.

All that matter is right now? Well hell, Michigan, Indiana, Gonzaga, Duke, Louisville, Miami Fl... are all better programs than MSU right now. Don't give me any of your last 15 years crap if you are now saying what happens on the court now is what matters.

And, for you acting like a bastion of cbb knowledge, MSU played Kansas in Atlanta.

Do you not understand that we are talking about what is happening currently in college BB and not in 1980 or in the 1960's? John Wooden has passed and Bob Knight has not been Indiana's coach in a very long time. My point is where these programs are in 2013 not about what happened 30-40 years ago. Currently only Duke and UNC have better records over the recent past than MSU. MSU under Izzo is undeniably an elite program.

So wait, does that mean Oregon, Kansas State and Stanford are elite football programs? I mean, it only makes sense if we want to throw out history, because clearly it has no bearing on the present.

No, I wasn't aware we were just talking about currently. Of course, that changes things a little because currently UM is ranked higher than MSU and currently UM has a better record than MSU. So if we just are talking currently, then currently UM has a better basketball program than MSU.

Yeah, it digressed quickly when MSU fans wanted to get off topic and talk about historical records, subjective reputation, etc. it's boring.

You seem to be talking in circles.

Are we talking about programs or teams? Earlier you said programs are developed over time. Yet here, you say we're talking about 2013. If that's the case, the gap is closed, seeing as both teams have identical records. Hell, Michigan and MSU have identical conference records over the last 3 years.

We are talking about recent programs. MSU is currently an elite BB program and has been for about 15 years. UM may be reaching this level.

By the way you like to cherry pick stats. Over the last 3 years, which team has done better in the NCAA tournament (2010, 2011, 2012)? A much better barometer of program. MSU has a FF, 1st round loss and a Sweet 16, UM was not in the tournament in 2010, lost in the second round in 2011 and first round in 2012.

Recent programs? When did we shift from currently to recently? And you say recently means the last three years and only considers performance in the NCAA? Well, if that is the question, then Butler is a better recent program than MSU because Butler has made two FFs in the last three years. In fact, VCU has made one so they must be an equivalent recent program to MSU. Good stuff to know.

Since you are a guy that love to bring up football in basketball threads...MSU's conference record in football in the past 3 years is 17-7, and UM's is 15-9. I take it that means that MSU has surpassed UM in football?

You are so obsessed with stacking UM up to MSU, it makes me giggle like a little school girl.
