The Block/Charge Call

  • There has to be something done about this. Two similar plays on Stauskas, 2 different results. He drives from the baseline one way, he's rewarded with a blocking foul. Very next play from the other side, it's a no call. Both calls benefitted Michigan, but it's absolutely disgusting that the same play is called 2 separate ways.

What annoys me about the block/charge is that the defensive player HAS to fall down for it to be called. I just want to see it called like a defensive foul. If you push off, it's an offensive foul. If you set a moving screen, it's an offensive foul. If you do any number of things that actually constitute a foul, it's an offensive foul.

This whole secondary defender rotating over to jump in the path of an offensive player attacking the basket aggressively after beating his man is not an offensive foul. If you want to keep that as an offensive foul, then let the bucket count. The point of defense is to keep the other team from scoring...not reward a defensive player for jumping under a guy after his teammate got beat off the dribble. I bet if you changed that call to be "count the bucket give the foul to the offensive player," you'd see alot less of these BS "defensive" plays.

Another one that just happened. GRIII called for a charge, but if the defensive player doesn't fall on his ass and just stands there in a defensive stance(like he easily could have done) there's no offensive foul.

Exactly. Which is why I think you get rid of it in that situation. It is a guessing game for the ref when the secondary defender rolls over to jump in front of an attacking offensive player.

If you get rid of the charge call, it becomes impossible to have any kind of secondary defense underneath. If offensive players can't be called for charges, you're not just saying that guys can't jump underneath a driving player, you're saying that defensive players legitimately there in time have to get out of the way, and then every game is just a layup drill.

I agree that it's a tough call for officials, and it's certainly very frustrating sometimes, but I'm betting they get it right a huge % of the time, and having the rule is certainly a lot better than the alternative.

Also, I think you're being unfair with the "it wouldn't be a foul if they didn't fall down" point. Sure, people flop sometimes, but most of the time defenders are falling down because they're being hit in the center of mass by a 200+ pound guy going 15 mph.

At least Pat Chambers gave the refs all they could handle for those calls. He went on about it for the next five minutes. It is such a tough call, but man did it sting watching from a PSU perspective.

  • Basketball was never meant to be perfect. It's officiated by humans. Live with it. Nothing needs to change.

I want to make it known that Steve Lorenz (Tremendous) is the reason my trial month became a permanent membership. Smart move 247.
