Take Five: Second-Year Players

In Coach Hoke's third year, the progression of the 2012 class needs to become a major catalyst for Michigan's 2013 success. Who are the names to watch this season?

  • Strobel is my favorite guy. So I def have not forgot about him.

The knock on wilson wasnt his coverage though, he was getti g trucked in the running game. And even at free safety, he will be depended on for run support. If he has gained weight and gotten stronger, then he can make a major impact

  • I would point to Chris Wormley too. Wormley was ready to play last year if it wasn't for the injury, and he'll have had a full year to rehab and add strength. He'll definitely get the opportunity to play in Mattison's rotation, and I think he'll be a beast.

EDIT: Wow, totally skipped over the fact that Wormley was mentioned. I'm an idiot. Good article Steve.

  • Love this coverage. I think this site is really going to continue to grow as the coverage of the actual team expands.

I'm really excited about what Strobel and Wormley can do on the line next year, and obviously Kalis will be a huge player.

Side note, I've gotten to know Strobel and Kalis pretty well this year - Strobel is absolutely hilarious.

Strobel and Kalis were two of the first interviews I ever did for Tremendous; they were also two of my favorite interviews, so what you say isn't surprising at all.

Yeah, they're both just very down to earth and easy to talk to. They don't seem like they're big time football players.

Also, Strobel is the only person I know who makes as many gay jokes as I do.

Thats ironic, since you are attracted to men ;)

  • Even though he played some last year, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pipkins name. I think with only Washington returning, that he will need to play a big role.

Well, this was specifically a discussion about 2nd-year players who haven't contributed yet, otherwise Pipkins, Bolden, and Ross would all also be at the forefront of the discussion. I do agree that he'll play a huge role next year (both literally and figuratively!) but we've already seen him contribute.

Yes, this was the exercise of the piece was to highlight some new 2012 names that would make an impact next season.

Were we to extend this list, I'd got with Wormley at 6, but Ben Braden and Drake Johnson have to be under consideration. The coaches have raved about both, and both have a real opportunity to step up and contribute. It sounds like Bryant won't be 100% going into next season, so I have to imagine Braden's one of the front-runners to step into that RG spot.

Whats wrong with Bryant? He will have 1 year to recover, and as far as I know he didnt have major surgery

  • Thanks Steve. This is a fantastic article for someone like me who doesn't have personal contact with the program. By the way, I also really appreciate the posts from Ducks and others who are close to the team.

Yeah, he didn't need major surgery, but he did fracture his tibia, so he pretty much had to just wait out the recovery time on that one. We know he already had some weight issues, and from what I heard, his weight ballooned a little bit and he's just been struggling with rehab and getting back down to a comfortable playing wait. Now, admittedly, I heard that a couple months ago, so the more that I think about it, the more unlikely it is that he doesn't get that taken care of before the season. I do think Braden will push him for the starting spot though.

I agree Bolden, Ojemudia, Funchess and Ross did contribute a lot last year and shouldn't be on the list. I just mentioned Pipkins because I considered his contributions along the lines of Jarrod Wilson's. Again, just a personal opinion. I agree that Wormley would be the number 6 spot on the list. Maybe a 4a and 4b with him and strobel.
