Suggestion for Recruiting Board

  • Over the past few months, recruiting info about specific prospects on this site has increased substantially. With the addition of Steve Lorenz, it is only going to grow further. I would like to suggest we add a recruiting board to better organize the info and keep track of each target. Many of the other team sites do this. We could have a pinned thread at the top showing all outstanding offers by position and then have separate threads (one for each prospect) in which Steve and the other staff can post updates on that particular prospect. Right now, Steve posts a new thread about a coach's visit or a possible offer and then that thread moves down the board slowly until it is lost. A dedicated recruiting board would better enable us to keep track of the hundreds of prospects we follow each year. Just a suggestion.

  • Agreed. Long term, it must happen, and with Steve on board, seems like a natural progression.

  • I would say we want to be careful that it doesn't draw too much traffic away from the main board, but as long as the "2013 Recruiting Thread" (and future iterations) stay open and remain the main place for discussion about any given year, I'm fine with it.

I would view such a board as more for reference and less for actual discussion.

Agree. Actually, I think the recruiting threads on this board should remain open and used just as they are now. Maybe the new recruiting board even should be "read only" for all of us posters. If only the staff can post on it, it will be easy to go there and read up on the latest progress with particular recruits but posters still will have to come back to the main board to discuss them.

This sounds perfect to me. This fits exactly with how I viewed the Recruiting board - it'd be more of a bulletin board for staff updates than an actual place for discussion. I think "Read Only" is a great idea. It also eliminates the amount of extraneous BS that clogs up boards like the RCMB recruiting board.

  • I don't think we're quite ready for another board being added to our site just yet. Numbers have been going up, but I still think we need to grow a bit more until adding a new board.

  • Also, while I find a lot of things about MGoBlog irritating, they have a few things I use for reference regularly. One is the "Depth Chart by Class" page. It shows every player and what position they play along with what class they are in for NCAA eligibility purposes. It also has denotations for which ones are walk ons and which ones have red shirted. It's incredibly useful so long as it is regularly kept up to date. We could have a thread like that maintained by the staff pinned at the top of the new recruiting board.

Here is a link to the MGoBlog page:

Another reference tool MGoBlog has that I find useful is a ranking of the recruiting classes of all the B10 teams. It basically takes the class rankings of all the B10 teams by the four major recruiting services and averages them. I find it much more useful than the 247 composite class rankings which seems to be an apples and oranges mish mash no one can really even understand. Again, this could be something pinned at the top of the new recruiting board and updated weekly by the staff here.

  • Guys, there a lot of things I plan to clean up, fix and also discuss once I start full-time. Right now I'm just focusing on pumping out content as I finish my other job. I have a lot of different ideas we can go over for a lot of different topics.

Ok. Thanks. I was not trying to step on your or anyone's toes. These were just a few ideas I had.

  • The problem with it being a Mod/Staff post only is people will want to discuss certain recruits and will still be posting stuff on the main board about x-recruit when it should be on the recruiting board...i like the idea of a second board but not the idea of Mod/Staff post only

Personally, I don't think you're stepping on anyone's toes. The best boards out there have a host of good and reasonable users (which we have) and the mods/admins weigh public opinion heavily in making any changes. Can't expect the mods/admins to come up with all the ideas, it's our duty as the users to suggest stuff.

  • I like the way Sparty organizes their Duffy board - an individual thread about each recruit with pertinent info in the title. I also like the idea of those threads being closed to posters. I hate seeing trolling and flaming in a thread about a kid.

This is exactly what I was talking about. Good idea on the Duffy board, poor execution. No need for all the extraneous BS about each kid.

Ok, but it's very easy to read updates on specific prospects on the recruiting board and then come back to the recruiting thread on the main board to discuss them. You can even link the appropriate page in the recruiting board thread if you think that helps people understand what you are discussing. It seems preferable to fragmenting the recruiting discussion by spreading it over hundreds of different specific threads on two boards.

But what happens when so many people flood the main board recruiting threads and info gets lost etc.?

Well, if that happens, i.e. we get so many users that the general recruiting thread on the main board itself becomes impossible to follow, we can always revisit the "read only" aspect of the recruiting board. We can always unlock the recruiting board for posting later as the board community grows in size. We are still pretty small and I think the bigger risk is fragmenting the users too much at this point. If you do that, the board can become "dead" and people might even begin to leave. We seem to be on a very nice growth path and we want that to continue.

  • This easiest and most efficient way to organize things is have an archive, almost how the tremendous site was laid out. You can break down each story/interview by the month, and then cross reference that with the position they play, and also have the recruiting class. For instance, you can check out all interviews/articles for RB prospects in the 2014 class....of if your out of the country for a month, you can check out all articles/interviews that occurred in April 2013. This way everything has an organized set place to be easily accessed.

Agreed, that's why I hate using scout. 247 has a way better layout and it's easier on the eyes. It'd be nice to have a more organized collection of archives.
