Story on UM commit Conley and Oregon

  • kylebennett7127 said...

I like conleys film a ton. But im going to wait to react until he officially takes that visit. I realize that this looks pretty bad with his usage of words including oregon being the favorite. But everyone threw a fit when dawson wanted to visit fla and evryone told me i was crazy for not being worried. This has a slightly different set of circumstances but ill wait to judge the situation until more details are available. If he is gone, its a position that can absorb the hit. we have a ton of playmakers there and it may give us the opportunity at a higher rated recruit down the stretch. Lets hang in there for now guys....

I tend to agree, but Dawson shut things down after speaking with the coaches. Conley has spoken with the coaches and is still very much entertaining the idea of visiting elsewhere. I think that's the worrisome part. We still have some quality CBs in the 2013 class and there's a lot of talent there for 2014. So I definitely agree that it's a hit that can be absorbed.

  • This thread is a prime example of why I love our fanbase. We are facing possibly our first decommitment of the class and we've more or less been civil, understanding and mature. People can say what they want, but there are not too many other 247 team sites that have such great discussion particularly for a negative topic. Much respect.

Yeah, that's Exactly why these circumstances are different. But my point is still not to melt down. Lm3 would be an upgrade IMHO, but not many others would be. I hope he stays, but if he doesn't it certainly isn't the end of the world either.

And for those counting.....it wouldn't be three to Oregon. We lost dior mathis as well.

Yeah and half their committed players are taking visits. Since kiffins coaching reminds me of a dumpster fire of plastic and tires, I wouldn't be surprised to see commits Decommiting.....well one can only hope.

And I meant which of our fans, the reasonable bunch We are.

I just want to throw this out there. First of all .. even though it seems as if he might be leaning towards being a Duck if he gets the offer .. I figure this is a perfect opportunity to bring this up.

For those of you who question Coach Hoke's stance on 'commits' not being allowed to take visits to other schools, while being committed to UM .. this is a perfect example of why. As some others have already mentioned .. once a commit makes his verbal to us, the coaches also make a similar commitment to them. The coaches have turned away a good amount of talent that wanted to visit. Why? Because they took this young mans commitment (his word) and considered him part of the class.

Lets say that Conley decides to go ahead and fully decommit, and heads to Eugene .. guess how we're left. Empty handed. Only to try and mend relationships with young men that have already been turned away for whatever reason. That's why Hoke does what he does, and sticks by it. Your commitment is your WORD. If you break it, then best of luck to ya.

Also .. for those of you on the 'the scholarship doesn't get pulled .. well .. you just heard it from the horses mouth. He talked to the coaches and they told him bluntly .. "you visit Cincy and your offer will get pulled" .. and me .. as a fan .. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thumbs up to the coaching staff. We've got something FAR too special being built in Ann Arbor right now, to change how we're doing things.

Best of luck to the kid wherever he ends up .. and ESPECIALLY if he smartens up and stays committed to the good guys.

I completely agree with this. I like Hoke's philosophy.

  • I like Hoke's policy as well, and I stand behind it 100% of the time regardless of who the commit is.

One thing I love about this class is honesty with recruits. They tell guys how it is as far as the visit policy, and they stand by it. When they tell guys that the first 2 to commit get the spots and they're done recruiting otherwise, they mean it. How many teams would have turned down Levenberry when he wanted to come back? Michigan told him that he had his chance and they are full at his position.

Once you know you've got guys committed, you can devote your resources to 2014 classes or the uncommitted guys, which is how you continuously build strong classes. Looks like Michigan's in on a number of top 2014 prospects, and I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that the coaches were able to get in on them early.

If Conley feels he committed too soon, then he has the right to visit other places and I won't knock him for it. But Hoke's policy is clear to pretty much everyone, regardless of fan base. As Todd said, Michigan has the advantage of saying that he was a priority for us and an option for everyone else, and hopefully he sees that. I hope Conley sticks with Michigan, but if he doesn't I'm not going to lose sleep over it. One thing this staff has proven is that it can recruit.

  • I'm 100% in favor of Hoke's policy. The only thing I'm unsure of is why the scholarship would get pulled, versus no longer considering them to be a commit thus providing the potential for someone else to fill their spot. If looked at with the marriage analogy, if the spouse is looking around town to cheat, I understand why their significant other would file for a divorce and never reconsider their ungrateful ex. Is that the same idea here, since the coaches made it clear they were committing to each other?

If a visit is made by a commit, it is clear he is not 100% committed. Therefore, I understand dropping him from the class. I'm just not fully convinced that taking away the opportunity to re-join the class if a spot is still available down the line is the ideal scenario. After all, these are high school kids. Conley committed because he loved Michigan, I'm sure he still does. But after seven months he's had some time to think and maybe with one of his dream schools offering, he would like at the very least to check out their campus and facilities. I'm sure he did not envision this back when he committed and if he did I'm sure he would have held off.

If I personally had a vote for this scenario, I would no longer consider Conley a commit (barring a visit..), look to fill his spot with worthy talent and if he returns from Oregon wanting to re-join I would let him. If his spot gets filled the day after he's decommitted, that's his fault. I understand this may open a can of worms, but you have to be logical and assume this would not happen with more than one or two guys per year.

And I'm not 100% clear on that last part. I know they always say "We won't consider them a part of the class" and will continue to recruit, but what if he says after the visit that he hated it and wants to stick with Michigan? I mean with Pharoah Brown last year they flat out pulled his ship, and on another site it was mentioned it was because Pharoah took the trip without even giving them a heads up.

I just think if you allow him to visit and then accept his commitment later, it flat out negates the policy, as kids will take the visit and then try to re-up later. I assume if he goes, they don't have someone already lined up to commit.

  • This is how I look at this.

If the kid goes whatever , one player does not make a team...

We have offers out to a few good players next year so we are recruiting the DB position anyway, so we either get LM3 or we wait until next year, and to be honest I believe there is more talent in 14'

    Offers are out to DB's:

    Jabrill Peppers
    Jalen Tabor
    Nick Watkins
    Parrker Westphal
    D'Andre Payne
    Damon Webb
    Troy Vincent
    Marshon Lattimore

And we have a few out to safeties,
Now granted a few of these kids are reaches but it shows that the coaches are not going to settle with what they have now either way. So all in all MICHIGAN will be just fine with Mr.Conley....IMO

Peppers - We have a chance.
Tabor - We have a chance, but I don't think he ends up here.
    Watkins - Bama or Texas.
Westphal - I think we get him.
Payne - Don't know anything about him.
Webb - I think we get him.
Vincent - Don't know anything about him.
Lattimore - He's better at WR, but he'll most likely end up a Buckeye.

Conley is better than a good amount of these guys though, imo.

  • If Conley does decide to visit Oregon, I wonder if that re-opens the re-recruitment of Levenberry...

I'd take that trade. Levenberry is a future WDE. A position of greater need for UM then CB IMO.

  • If he does choose to visit Oregon, it isn't a big deal. If he is having concerns with his decisions and is not sure he truly loves Michigan, I'd rather it be now rather than when he is in college.

It's clearly a risk, especially if he gets taken to the woodshed again this year by an SEC team in the BCSCG. He made some comments following the LSU game last year that the defensive talent down South is just at another level. Oregon has done a fantastic job elevating its program based on an explosive offense and Nike marketing, but if Chip Kelly begins to believe he will just never get enough elite defensive talent to come to Eugene, he might start thinking about alternatives. If not the NFL, it might be a higher profile college program with access to better talent (e.g., UT, USC, UGA, FSU).

Chip Kelly being talked about as helping Belichek with no huddle concepts cant hurt his NFL opportunities either.

  • Good news is that this should be over quickly. It's his decision and a visit would be coming up soon if they offered today.
His coach I've heard wants him to stick to his choice but its been very clear his mom wants him on the west coast. It seems as if he is on the clock! We are taking wagers on the place your bets thread......jk

  • If he chooses to leave, so be it. Lets be honest...we are going to have SOMEONE decommit. At least probability says that.

I like Conley, hope he sticks, but just like Brown last year...we will survive and be well off either way.

  • Well I hope Conley stays. I also agree with the coaches stance. If he visits he will be done as far as Michigan is concerned. We may re-recruit him but it will surely not be before the coaches exhaust all other available options. I think there is a 80% chance the visit never takes place and he stay blue. In my maize and blue colored world I have a hard time believing there is even a decision to make. 1. Michigan offered and had faith in me when no one else did. 2. It has been made very clear very early that I was a priority to Michigan. 3. By the time I get to school bot Michigan and Oregon will be very comparable talent wise. 4. One school is 2000 miles from home.

If he does leave however besides LM3 I hope we recruit Priest Willis hard. I have said it before and will say it again. Priest Willis is going to be a very elite player at the college level. Chances are he will be elite in the NFL also. LM3 has the talent to be elite at both levels also. I think we would have a decent shot at both guys.
