  • I think we will just go with three corners and push for LMIII unless another corner expresses interest in UofM. We are in the thick of things with some really great corners in 2014. It sucks because Conley was a tall corner we have been trying to recruit but we are in on some big corners in 2014 so we will be alright.

  • This will end like Pharaoh Brown. Next thing we will hear is Conley is on a plane to Oregon. He has learned to not publicly say things, so my guess is it goes quiet until the day of his flight.

whoa whoa... are folks reading too much into the article? I don't see anywhere in the article where he states or he infers that UM was a place holder. I know when he committed to UM he was known as a heavy UM lean because he was a fan of UM (according to early reports by TVH). He obviously is also a fan of Oregon as well and that is not uncommon for a kid to like two schools. "I really want to visit Oregon but they haven't offered yet. If they do offer that will give me a lot to think about. I really want to check them out, they have been my favorite school for a long time, but it would obviously end things with Michigan." This does not tell me he used UM as a place holder but it does tell me that he regrets not waiting to commit to UM because he could visit Oregon without any reprecussions such as losing his scholly to UM and then weigh which school is best for him. I think folks are really overreacting to a kid that is truly torn I do want him in this class, I think he will be a unique game changer we need on D. but I won't hold ill will against him because I just don't interpret him doing anything shady here. Yes it hurts us if he does leave but it happens to every elite program. I’m sure the coaches would prefer to know now rather than later.

    +1

I agree with every word. Was thinking the same thing when I saw all the "place holder" comments. People take recruiting too personally sometimes.

No. It's fairly obvious. He doesn't want to lose his spot to UM so he didn't visit CIncy. He's just waiting for an offer from his "favorite school" and once he gets it he's gone.

If you don't see that than you are wearing maize and blue goggles.

lol Not taking anything personally. It's pretty simple. If Conley gets that Oregon offer and visits then Michigan was a placeholder. It's that simple.

  • And he can do whatever he wants to. Kids re-open their recruitment all the time after getting new or "better" offers. It just sucks because our staff is one of the few that take kids at their word, and tell other kids not to visit because we are full at a position.

You obviously aren't familiar with my posts, I'm the furthest from UM bias. perhaps he is gone, I'm just disagreeing with the placeholder comments...I don't think that was the case at all. Some kids don't fully comprehend the no visit policy and he has regrets about committing early, that does not equate place holder.

  • A CB prospect from northern Ohio who wants to be a two-way star would naturally want to go to his favorite team, the Oregon Ducks.

I don't know about you but when he said they have been my favorite school for a long time I tend to think that goes way back before he committed in March. Honestly he never felt like part of the class to me. Never saw him mention anything UofM, hasn't been on campus nearly as much as the other Ohio kids. It is what it is though

I kind of feel that way about Ross Douglas. Not saying he's going to decommit but I haven't even heard his name mentioned at all ever since he committed to us.

  • Oregon has become a recent thorn in our side.

I'm a bit bitter because we lost both games in our recent home-and-home series but it goes beyond that now.

If Conley flips to Oregon, then this will be the third recruit that we will have lost to Oregon's persistence. I liked Pharaoh Brown and I like Conley. (I was unsure about Jake Fisher.)

Douglas will be enrolling in January. We have nothing to worry about on that front.

Well, looks like that all it takes is an offer from Oregon and he is gone. We will see if it plays out that way.

Then he should go. He shouldn't go to a school he doesn't want to and we shouldn't want a player who wishes he was somewhere else. That's a recipe for problems down the line. He's not the only talented CB in the country and we have until February to work hard and fill the spot with another. It would be worse if he changed his mind in January.

Exactly. And it's impossible to know the ripple effect. Maybe taking one less CB this year will help us land someone special next year. We have an excellent class already and four months to fill the final few spots. And every program has decommitments. We are no more immune than Alabama or Ohio State. If it happens, it will be disappointing, but it's relatively small in the overall scheme of all the positives happening with recruiting.

Don't focus on the life long fav school because thats not the underlying point I'm making.
My interpretation is he made the mistake of committing to us before knowing whether or not Oregon was interested....not that he committed to us only to decommit once Oregon came. The difference in what I think is intent....folks are saying Conley intended to use UM as a place holder and I'm saying that is a stretch based on what we are reading in the article. "Did I purposely eat the cookie because I didn't want anyone to have the last one, or did I eat the cookie because I didn't know anyone wanted one.:" big difference in intent bw the two.

  • Like Luger said, I think a lot of people are reading too much into this. First of all, Gareon has been committed to Michigan for seven months now. It's not like he was immediately looking to go elsewhere. It sounds like this (Oregon) is the one offer that could make him reconsider. I've seen a lot of "placeholder" situations, and don't get that vibe from this at all.

Also, he didn't say that he would definitely visit Oregon if the Ducks offer. He said he'd have to think about it, and that it'd be a difficult decision.

If I'm Michigan, I'd try to emphasize the fact that the Wolverines believed in him enough to offer 8-9 months ago, proving that he's a priority, while Oregon waited until now, proving that he wasn't their priority.

He tweeted it. And while there's no mention of Michigan.. he's stating that Oregon is above all.

  • I like conleys film a ton. But im going to wait to react until he officially takes that visit. I realize that this looks pretty bad with his usage of words including oregon being the favorite. But everyone threw a fit when dawson wanted to visit fla and evryone told me i was crazy for not being worried. This has a slightly different set of circumstances but ill wait to judge the situation until more details are available. If he is gone, its a position that can absorb the hit. we have a ton of playmakers there and it may give us the opportunity at a higher rated recruit down the stretch. Lets hang in there for now guys....

  • I just want to throw this out there. First of all .. even though it seems as if he might be leaning towards being a Duck if he gets the offer .. I figure this is a perfect opportunity to bring this up.

For those of you who question Coach Hoke's stance on 'commits' not being allowed to take visits to other schools, while being committed to UM .. this is a perfect example of why. As some others have already mentioned .. once a commit makes his verbal to us, the coaches also make a similar commitment to them. The coaches have turned away a good amount of talent that wanted to visit. Why? Because they took this young mans commitment (his word) and considered him part of the class.

Lets say that Conley decides to go ahead and fully decommit, and heads to Eugene .. guess how we're left. Empty handed. Only to try and mend relationships with young men that have already been turned away for whatever reason. That's why Hoke does what he does, and sticks by it. Your commitment is your WORD. If you break it, then best of luck to ya.

Also .. for those of you on the 'the scholarship doesn't get pulled .. well .. you just heard it from the horses mouth. He talked to the coaches and they told him bluntly .. "you visit Cincy and your offer will get pulled" .. and me .. as a fan .. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thumbs up to the coaching staff. We've got something FAR too special being built in Ann Arbor right now, to change how we're doing things.

Best of luck to the kid wherever he ends up .. and ESPECIALLY if he smartens up and stays committed to the good guys.
