Stonum....

  • Link says he was pulled over for driving again. The article has some clear mistakes though, saying he was pulled over Wednesday night, but the quoted part says it was after meeting with his probation officer at 7am. If he couldn't get a ride to the probation appointment, that would maybe be a different scenario than getting pulled over randomly driving at night, but who knows.

  • He went to his 7AM appt. and after he left police pulled him over b/c they determined he had driven there himself. You'd think somebody would give him a ride, a coach, a team manager, take a cab! This is not good. Hoke will have to make a tough decision. Hopefully they can pardon him or something...i'm no legal expert though.

    He is gone imo.

It was a stupid move made by kids. If this was alcohol related, see ya. If true he was leaving his probation officer when pulled over then the law needs to extend the probation and suspended license, but I wouldn't kick him off the team for that. Hoke's call on this, and I can see it either way. Stonum should have had someone drop him off and pick him up. shrug

Depends on the scenario. All of your teammates just got back from New Orleans and are starting first, and only, break from football for the year (they get like 4 weeks "off" before official conditioning starts). Maybe you had plans to get a ride from somebody, but they didn't get up at 6:30am like you needed and you realized you were going to miss your probation appointment, which would be bad. You don't think you have time to get to catch a bus, so you opt to drive yourself thinking it's worse to miss the appointment.

Really dumb to drive yourself to the police station/courthouse, but doesn't seem "deviant" or anything like that.

    Dizzo

  • Disappointing. I agree that in the grand scheme of things this really isn't that bad, but how dumb do you have to be to drive to the FREAKING police station while your on the revoked list. banghead

I personally hope to see Stonum remain with the team. Having said that, the ball is in Hoke's court and I will understand his decision either way.

  • It all depends on the hearing. If he's been good and the probation officer says as much, then he won't get in much trouble for this. It's a dumb move but it's understandable. He didn't put anyone at risk by doing this.

This. I'm all for fair punishment, but kicking a kid off the team for driving himself to probation? Even on a suspended license I find that a pretty poor reason to get booted. He should have known better, but this is like surviving a tsunami only to trip and drown in a kiddie pool.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Well, Rocky, it depends. Hoke supposedly set strict limits on Stonum. If he violated it, he is gone. If he has a better explanation than I am seeing right now, maybe he gets a smaller punishment. But Stonum was on a very short leash already. I would not be surprised to see him gone.

  • He was going to the soup kitchen to volunteer, then it was off to the church for choir practice....wishful thinking.
I have to think Hoke made it very clear no more BS and for this to happen doesn't bode well for him IMO. Stupid move by a young kid...again

I wouldn't be shocked if somebody fell on the sword for him in this case though. Woolfolk is a close friend of DC and his eligibility is up. If he went to the coaches and said "I told him I'd drive him and didn't wake up and put him in a bad spot."

If he was going to the store or driving somewhere else random, it is very different from driving to a mandatory appointment at 7am. Heck, thinking about it now, it would be worse for me if he was hanging out with friends late Wednesday night and overslept missing the appointment.

From a pure football perspective, where does this leave your WRs next year if he's gone?

Roy Roundtree who struggled to get open and struggled catching the ball this year.
Jeremy Jackson who is not fast enough to be an outside receiver threat, more a red zone target because of his height.
Jeremy Gallon who is about 5'8"
Drew Dileo who is about 5'6"
Jerald Robinson who has potential, but has spent more time in the doghouse than on the field in his 2 years on campus.

Then the two true freshman, Amarah Darboh and Jehu Chesson.

(And for those who think I'm joking about Dileo's height, see the picture attached :) )

Not sure the probation officer will appreciate being lied to though.

He didn't put anyone else at risk. He may have put himself at risk.

And...no, I don't think he should be kicked off the team.

  • It would be a huge blow. We already we're going to be thin as it is. I think that would probably launch Madaris near the top of our board.

I think it's 50/50. Somewhere you have to draw the line with second and third chances or you lose the respect of the rest of the team, but yeah it is a pretty ticky tack violation. I bet he drove about a half a mile and he was trying to get to his probation meeting on time. If the court lets it slide, maybe Hoke will make him run stadium steps at 5am for a week or something, but I can see this going either way really. At some point, he has to learn to be more responsible and letting him slide doesn't teach that lesson to him or any of the other players.

Possible, but couldn't that also be handled with a phone call explaining the situation and telling your PO you are on your way?

  • Let's let this play out... I don't think he will get booted nor should he in my opinoin. By all accounts Stonum has done everything Hoke and company have asked him too do this off season and through the season. Not going too get into specifics of what all that entails... but I think it would wrong too kick Stonum off here.

  • Wow, does that suck.
But come on. Even if he was notified at 11pm the night before, SOMEONE on the team could have given him a ride. They all know his circumstances. They all want to see him back on the team. He's got to exhaust every cell number he's got to find a ride. If he couldn't, then take a bus. If no bus, ride a bike. If no bike, RUN.

What a kick in the nuts for him and his teammates.

I felt that Stonum was the best pure WR on your roster the past few years, even with Roundtree's great 2010. Thought he'd exceed Hemingway's '11 #s in '12 for sure and really give you guys a smooth transition from the '12 to '13 in the WR department.

I think there's a 5% chance get gets booted though, so this is probably a moot point lol.

I thought that too, originally, but Hemingway truly is special in terms of his ability to time his jumps and take balls away from DBs. All of those jump balls are not just a coincidence. I think Stonum might be faster and smoother, but Hemingway is much more physical and has a knack for coming down with the ball in traffic. We are going to miss Hemingway next year much more than many people think.

Also, Roundtree is much better in the slot than as a wideout. We are lacking true wideouts right now. Unless someone emerges, it is going to be a glaring weakness next year.
