  • Not only would I be surprised, but I would be furious if Gardner goes back to WR at some point in the season. I do not want Bellomy to be our starting QB and I do not think Shane should touch the ball on the field this year. Bellomy showed he could "handle the offense" last year in practice, only until he stepped in a game situation on the road. And there's no way to gauge Shane in practice, he will be a true freshman and need several games (at the least) to develop.

If Gardner goes back to WR, our season is beyond screwed.

  • I think you are spot on about Gardner just needing to be more consistent. Excellent breakdown.

Now I would be absolutely shocked to see Gardner move back to WR. He is a great athlete but i was not as impressed with him at WR as some others here were. He has much more upside at QB in my opinion.

  • I agree with the comments above that Gardner moving to WR would be way more than surprising. It would be absolutely stunning. I think there is a less than 1% chance of Gardner moving back to WR.

Gardner is almost surely the best QB for the team next year. And he's been waiting years for the opportunity to be a Michigan QB. It would likely be a devastating blow to team chemistry if DG is not QB, barring injury.

  • There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY Gardner goes back to wr this season! The coaches are moving this team in a Forward direction.... why make a backwards move? And our receivers will be way more productive than many keep giving them credit for. I expect to see Gardner finish up the next 2 seasons at QB.

  • I definitely don't think that the coaches want to move Gardner back to receiver but I thought he was excellent at the position and if that's what they need to do to get more production out of the offense, that's what they will do. Could the offense potentially take a step back if that happens? Possibly, but who knows? Shane Morris could take over and show he can lead the team as a freshman. We have Morris ranked as a high four-star for a reason. Mean's we think he has the abilities to play as a true freshman. I'm just thinking about all the possible scenarios when writing an article like this. It's a long season, who knows what could happen.

Gardner will be starting all season. Shane is not ready, and Bellomy ... he is not the mold for the B10.

  • Gardner is NOT moving back to WR. Period. This shouldn't even be a discussion.

Sugar Shane is no doubt a future beast. Love that kid. But as far as the receiver production, just go back and do the math.... when Gardner stepped in both Roy and Gallon's numbers increased. The only player that took a hit in that dept was Funchess. And I believe more of that was play calling. Also take into account that the run game and blocking schemes will better fit the players we have at their respective positions. I agree that you've presented an accurate alternative, but please understand... that alternative scares the crap out of some of us fans LOL

  • I'm in agreement with everyone else. I think that Bellomy does have the talent for the B1G but he crumbles under pressure and thats when you need your qb to step up. As for Morris the kid is obviously supremely talented but does still need some work on consistency and reading defenses and its always preferable to not have to start a qb as a true frosh. I'm very much hoping for a couple of our young wr's to step up, if Gardner if moved back to wr that will be a bad sign imo

I see what your did here Clint and I think I like it. He's got to be the quarterback this year, he is more valuable then DR last year after his showing when he took over. I'm with Willy very excited too see Devin own it this year. After UM he will be a fine wide-out if that's what he chooses to do Clint.

  • Definitely concur that Clint went off the rails with the "I wouldn't be surprised if" segment.

I want to make it known that Steve Lorenz (Tremendous) is the reason my trial month became a permanent membership. Smart move 247.

Gardner is not moving back to WR. He's a phenomenal athlete, but that's a big difference from being a phenomenal WR. Go back and look at his receiving stats from last year, especially in big games. He has more work to do to become an elite WR than guys like Darboh and Chesson do.

But even putting the lack of a developed skill set argument aside, there's a huge reason Gardner will not move back to WR in 2013. That reason is our depth chart. Including Gardner, we will have three scholarship QBs on the roster in 2013. One is a true freshman we would really like to RS for the future of the program, one is a guy who had one of the single worst QB performances in UM history when he had to come in last year to replace Denard and the last is Devin Gardner. No coach who seriously cares about keeping his job would take the only proven QB out of the mix and leave us with a true freshman and Russell Bellomy as our only QB options.

  • New to the board, and I don't want to upset any of the mods, but your evaluation of DG as one of, if not the best wr on the team belongs on a baseball site, because that comment came from left field. Simply put, he was lost a lot of times at that position, and Gallon is hands down winner for top receiver. I'd go so far as saying Funchess, in his true freshman year, was every bit as good as DG, even though he was listed as a TE but distinguished himself as a wr/te combo.

If Borges had been on the ball in a couple of games -nothing wrong with relief picture-DG´s stats would be much better, i.e., 2nd half of ohio game when he only hit every first down pass, then suddenly was called on to hand the ball off on each successive down.

He will not see wr this season, unless it's a throwback to our double passes we threw during the LC era.

Hopefully, will he not only be our starting qb all of next season, but in 2014 as well, granted the RS comes through. If you want to get an idea of what he would have accomplished last season, simply do the math by multiplication and, of course, with DR catching some of his passes if that would have been the case, his numbers would have been staggering.

He is our man, and talk to the contrary is simply that.
