Spring Storylines: Defense

The Michigan defense is starting to turn into an all-around solid unit. Is this the year they take that next step?

Is the next step a top 5 defense nationally? Quite the 3 year turnaround...

  • Blake Countess and Ray Taylor are going to be a very good CB tandem.

    Yup.

I think it's really impressive that the secondary did as well without its best player last year, and I think Taylor is better than JT Floyd was, so there could be a ton of improvement there.

I'll take top 20 in passing defense, top 20 in run defense, and top 10 in 3rd conversions

  • I think James Ross is going to be a great linebacker. He has the instincts, speed and he is adding weight and strength according the pictures of him floating around the interwebz. I am really excited about him his future at Michigan.

Jarrod Wilson is going to make a leap too.

  • I think the key more than anything this year will be to stop the run. If you can stop the run in the big ten then you're going to win a lot of games. Outside of Indiana and Penn State, there isn't a team whose passing game isn't secondary to their running game. Notre Dame, Minnesota, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa, and Ohio State are all run first teams. I want to see the average yards per game, given up by Michigan, to be around 100. That's about what Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State allowed.

  • I think our D-Line is going to be much improved this year.

The battle for the SDE spot is going to be interesting. So many possibilities.

I still dont know how Mattison didnt win assistant coach/coordinator of the year for 2011?? Its kind of like the impropriety of how Barret Jackman beat out Zetterberg for the Calder trophy in '03

I agree. But what I will say about J.T. is that he had much more fluidity in his hips than given credit for. He should have had at least 3 pick 6's last year the way he broke on the ball and jumped routes. But with that said, Countess and Taylor are going to be the best duo in the B1G.
