First off....Obama is half white. Anyone who plays the race card because of Obama being "black" is being prejudice to his white ancestry, and being white myself, I take offense to that.

There's not going to be "a best person for the job". There is going to be a lot of good choices for this job, and the Hoke will be able to find black candidates that are just as good as any white candidates.

Meanwhile, if they hire another white coach, the staff will be 90% white coaching a team that is predominantly black. That's the sort of disparity that will be noticed by players, recruits, and families.

I think race plays a part in the candidate's ability to recruit. That's just reality. However, I will agree that today's PC environment is completely biased. It is far less offensive to say that the candidate should be black than it is to say the candidate should be white. I will heed CorchBlue's warning and no go into my opinions on racial quotas and Affirmative Action.

I 100% agree with this. As much as it should not matter as long as they are qualified, it matters a lot. The diversity or lack of diversity of a staff speaks to its level of progressiveness.

Since the topic of conversation is race, aren't the "top" recruiters predominantly white? Mattison, Urban, Saban, etc. Old white guys. If a recruit is basing his next 3-5 years on his coach being black, then that's not a kid i'm interested in.

While i'm thinking about it, Michigan seems to have a large percentage of white players in the past few classes... is that because of the lack of Souhern players, or is it because we didn't have enough black influence? /s

If Michigan is looking for an African American coach AND an Asian American coach, Marcus Freeman is the one! His dad is black and his mom is Korean...

Out of curiosity, do we have a limit on the number of coaches we can have? It seems like it's simply an advantage to have extra staff members. Why do we only have 13?

This has nothing to do with politics. Recruits notice when there is only one black guy on the coaching staff.

Whenever Fickell leaves, all Urb hires are based on one thing, can they recruit? He's said numerous times that he won't even consider anyone, regardless of their resume if they don't love recruiting and are very good at it. I don't think Marcus has had the chance to see if he can recruit yet, or if he enjoys it. One year at Kent State isn't going to be enough of a history for a school like UM or OSU to hand over the keys to a recruiting territory and a position to coach.

I think Hazell will do well at Purdue and move on to a better position in 3 years ish....By that time, Marcus will either start to make a name for himself and be worthy of a big school offer or maybe move with Hazell with a promotion...

It's important to have a coaches who are all races and all ages who are all great coaches and recruiters not just hiring them because they are a certain race or age. You need different ages and races because some kids will relate better to different coaches. Some kids aren't going to be interested in being recruited by an old white guy who has never lived in the inner city. That's just the reality.
