Second Spring Practice

Also, Braden is running with the 1's. He was a 3* across the board, the lowest rated oline recruit from the last 2 years.

Wisconsin wanted Braden bad, that's all I need to know. He will be good.

  • I think people are more upset that a walk-on is starting over a former 5 star who many tabbed as "close" as a frosh to contribute on this team... No offense to Joey B because he does everything right but I think the message may be sent to Kalis that he needs some work... I remember the other year that Terrence Talbott was running with the 1's and people were saying he was going to grab a spot... Well we didn't hear from his after that.... Same with Hawthorne last year running with the 1's... ST player... This staff motivates but has no time to wait for players... Next man up has to be ready

You bring up a good point. We saw literally two snaps in the second spring practice. Who says Joey B is ahead of Kalis? For all we know, they were like 'Hey, Joey, take a few snaps here with the 1's'. I'm guessing that he might be the first off the bench as a back-up, so it's still probably important for him to get some snaps witht he ones to keep some chemistry there. Nobody should be worrying about this at this juncture.

  • So now that's the starting OL? Already set it stone 2 days into Spring workouts...

Also, if you all remember correctly, Joey B was the 1st off the bench/1st sub on the OL LAST year, so obviously the coaching staff feels a sense of comfort with him on the OL. Doesn't mean he's the most talented kid, because he's not, but at this point......it's not really a big deal. Kalis will get all the opportunities in the world to show/prove that he's one of the best 5.

I'm not basing this on anything whatsoever, but I think Kalis will get the nod over Burzynski by the time season rolls around.

Also, speculating on the state of our team from each of these 2 minute practice videos is laughable. We will learn nothing through these videos. Just watch Schembechler in action and enjoy.

This is how I feel it ends up. Burzynski has the experience right now and the younger kids have to prove that they are better. By fall I feel that it will happen, and no matter what we know that the best man will be playing.

As for the second part, melting down is laughable, but discussing what we see in these limited glimpses is all we have. Discuss it all day, but take what we see with a grain of salt, we are only getting snap shots of what the coaches want us to see.

Yep. These "lineups" don't tell the whole story, at all. If we are halfway through fall practice, and the OL still looks like this and whatnot, then I could understand a couple questions. Long ways out still.

Lineups in fall ball don't tell the whole story either. We didn't see the center/guard swap of Mealer and Barnum until gameday. Did we see anything on where Gardner would be before gameday? I know it was discussed, but I thought that was kept out of the camera shots.

My OP can be changed from starting to "running with the 1's". I don't think anybody is saying it is set in stone, this is the limited glimpse we have of Michigan footbal, right now, and so that is being discussed. Nothing wrong with discussing this stuff in my eyes, we have 5 and half months to wait for an actual game to be played.

Actually Blake Bars was rated lower than Braden by 247 and Competitor sites.

TBH, I was only looking at what MGoBlog kicked out. You are probably right, I didn't look at the specifics. They had Braden a 3* across the board and Bars being a 4* to Rivals while being a 3* everywhere else.

    Second practice video.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h94QbSshFGU

Observation on the starting unit for oline right now,

    RT: 75 Schofield
    RG: 56 Burzynski
    C: 60 Miller
    LG: 71 Braden
    LT: 77 Lewan

Second team unit walking up was,

    RT: 69 Erik Gunderson
    RG: 67 Kyle Kalis
    C: 61 Graham Glasgow
    LG: 65 Blake Bars
    LT: 70 Kristian Mateus

Also posted this in the first practice thread.

Sidenote for mods, I wouldn't mind seeing a thread where the only post are videos. Going in order from Hoke's press conference to the end of the spring.

I may be wrong but I think the video is from the 1st spring practice on Saturday, though its an update dated today. I only say that because DG tweeted that practice number 2 was today and the video you linked was released on Sunday.

  • Agree, 2nd video of Saturdays practice. Might be why it's shorter. Hope they release a video of today's practice later.

Very well could be. Makes the argument about hand wringing all the more funnier.

  • Wish I knew who was who in the practice videos, don't like to have to keep going back to the roster

Very true. Besides Lewan and Scofield no one has any starting spot. Those two will always be with the ones just for coming back. They deserve the most coaching for staying and to get them ready for the next level. The other three O-line spots are pretty much up for grabs right now. Eventually the best guys will take the field. People can say it is a shame that a red shirt freshman can not earn a spot and that is kind of true. If one of the walkons earns a spot it just tells me our coaches are doing a great job developing everyone and that the walkon busted his tail to put himself into a good position. Either way, we should all be happy we have competition again for playing time.
