Satch Sullinger helped Trey Burke decide to come back

  • I interviewed Satch for our radio show on Bucknuts today and wanted to pass this on...

    Even though it's going to be a very weak draft for point guards and Trey likely would have been a late first-round pick, Satch told Trey that he thought he should stay in college. Trey came to his former high school coach, asked him what he should do and asked him to be straight with him. Satch told him, "You need to stay. You'll be a good player at the next level one day, but you're not ready. You need to get better at the pick-and-roll. You need to get better at decision-making and shooting. You're only 5-11. You need to stay and work on your craft."

    (Buckeye fans that read this, please don't get mad at Satch. Ha. Trey is like a son to him and he was just giving him real advice. Although, even taking the Buckeye blinders off, I think Burke should have declared for the draft. We might never see a PG draft this weak again and the NBA loves them some PGs. Passing up the chance to be a sure-fire first-round pick is not something I would want my son doing. However, Satch gave the same advice to Jared last year.)

    But I'm glad that Satch helped Trey make the right decision.

  • I've always really liked Sullinger. He's one of those OSU guys that are really hard to dislike. Obviously a great player but he handled himself with class and humility, especially when that student made the poster of him singing "Party in the USA"

    Seems like he learned that all from his old man. That's good for him to look out for Trey. We all definitely appreciate it lol

  • Thanks for the info. I think saying Trey was a 'sure fire first round pick' is a stretch though. Darius Morris was told by scouts he was one too because the NBA loves tall PGs, but that didn't work out either.

    Trey is a great player and I am glad to have him back. I don't think he would have been taken in the 1st round, but I am glad we won't have to find out.

  • I believe that just because this particular draft class is weak in terms of point guards that it does not have any effect on next year's draft. If, as people state, the NBA loves point guards then even if there are several outstanding ones available next year they will still go high in the draft no matter what.

    Next year if Trey progresses his body and skill set even by a medium amount he will be pushing for a lottery pick.

    I disagree. I believe Trey would have been a late first-rounder this year. Weak draft class for PGs and several teams wanting a PG. You watch, there will be PGs not as good as Trey that go in the late first.

    Ha! If he couldn't laugh at the "Party in the USA" thing, then he couldn't laugh at anything. Even Buckeye fans got a kick out of how awful that was. And as bad as Sully was, Craft was worse!

    Several teams want a game-changing PG and not just any PG. The Lakers, for instance, headline that group.

    The NBA is loaded at the PG position like never before. Moreover, the fortunes of many teams nowadays are dependent on having a scoring PG that can lead a team.

    Trey wasn't ready to be that guy.

    Moreover, most kids leaving college don't seem to understand that it's not the first contract that really pays. It's the second one.
